Going from a prison doctor who was held by a prisoner for 10 hours and raped, to a published author advocating for prisoners, including having an ex-con as a roommate. Take 2 - with Karen Gedney Oct 22, 2019
    Show notes

Karen and I met again for an update of information. As I know Karen personally, I get to see the impact she has made and is still making in the lives of prisoners - including having a former prisoner as a roommate in her house. Her focus is on using the prison system to rehabilitate people and send them into the world not only better than they came in but as contributing, adjusted people. She spends her time now teaching from the stage.

    In her words:

I'd like to talk about how to use one's creativity to help transform institutions and society. I think that there is a lot of pain in the world that the medical and the correctional world both get wrong. Both concentrate on the endpoint which is preventable, costly and tragic. I think that creativity through stories, poetry, art, music and how we can touch other people's lives in positive ways can help transform systems and societies. I'll talk about why I wrote my book, but I'd also really like to talk about the healing I saw take place in the prison thru the creative writing and poetry course that was taught by Shaun Griffin, the poet laureate for the state and the inmates he was able to touch and transform. Also, the story of Ismael Santillanes the inmate artist who did the illustrations in my book and is now has a published poetry book called Indelicate Angels. It also happens that he taught fine art to inmate Michael Clifford Helm who is the author of Mayhem- A Life (his memoir where he mentions me and what I did as a prison doctor for him). He came in the prison with not completing high school and left with a high school diploma, 2 years of college and when he left became a nuclear medicine technician.

Feeling lost and gaining value from others, partying too hard, using sex to feel loved, a boyfriend that died at 29, hitting reset and finding her place - with Olivia Shwetz Oct 19, 2019
    Show notes

When I read a bit about Olivia's story, I was ecstatic about our interview. SO common and not discussed enough. Feeling lost and that your value comes from other people, escaping with alcohol, partying too hard, using sex to feel loved. When Olivia realized she had alienated the people she loved most, when her boyfriend died at 29, when she felt the most alone - she hit the reset button and fell in love all over again. With herself, with her life, with a new man. Advice from her I loved, "Follow your YUM". She found her message in her mess.

    Show notes

Mica's story will touch your heart. Growing up in poverty, loving theater, feeling like she didn't have a place, bouncing around and listless. Mica built baggage on her journey. She was the first in my family to graduate from high school. The first to go to college. She was also the first to drop out of college. One day she snapped with her boyfriend and said how she felt. "I hate my life!". Then came the rebuilding of the things she once loved, in a new way. Find Mica HERE

Stripping With My Daughter Alana - Parenting Teens Sep 03, 2019
    Show notes

Today Alana and I discuss parenting teens. As a parent, I was not permissive but not restrictive. I trusted my kids even when I knew they were lying. They knew they could always come to me, although I wasn't always the first choice. They really relied on each other - which I love. Not all of them choose to communicate with each other or me, which is really hard to watch and feel. We talked about sex, drugs, sneaking out, alcohol at 16, and birth control among other things. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/becoming-parents/message

Bullying, body image, growing up as part of Mean Girls, eating disorder, suicidal and afraid - with Sydney Nanberg Aug 20, 2019
    Show notes

Sydney and I get real, deep and personal about bullying, body image, growing up living in the movie Mean Girls, having an eating disorder, being suicidal and afraid to go to school. What helped? Journaling, gratitude, motivational videos and podcasts all learned at the treatment facility she checked herself into. What started as wanting to help others who were bullied, everything Sydney does helps others to be seen as their true selves, in a positive way.
