Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: SSV Ulm 0-4 Bayern Munich (DFB-Pokal) Aug 16, 2024
    Show notes

Bayern Munich came into its DFB-Pokal match against SSV Ulm looking to exorcise the ghosts of past German Cups.

Consider that mission accomplished as the Bavarians stormed away from SSV Ulm for a thoroughly dominant 4-0 win in a match where the squad was never seriously threatened.

Bayern Munich put forth a first strong effort and gave Vincent Kompany his first real win as manager at the club. Let’s take a look at what’s on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:

    • A look at Kompany’s starting XI — what was shocking (not much) vs. what was expected (pretty much all of it).
    • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
    • Appreciating the greatness of Thomas Müller.
    • The midfield of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović.
    • This was nice, but it will likely be different moving forward.
    • Addressing the Leon Goretzka news.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 5: What can go right and what can wrong for Bayern Munich; Catching up on Désiré Doué, Alphonso Davies, Marco Reus, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, & Kingsley Coman; + some pod updates! Aug 15, 2024
    Show notes

Bayern Munich’s preseason is essentially over (the new friendly vs. Grasshopper Club Zürich notwithstanding) and the team is looking more and more like a finished product.

That said, a lot happened since our last Weekend Warm-up Show, so there was a lot to talk about. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:

    • Since we last spoke: Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui officially skipped town for Manchester United, Désiré Doué chose Paris Saint-Germain, Alphonso Davies is in limbo, and Kingsley Coman’s future is up in the air. This is fine.
    • Marco Reus is off to MLS and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Will Robert Lewandowski join him at some point? Also, some brief thoughts on the steroid topic from this week.
    • What can go right and what can wrong for Bayern Munich.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show: SSV Ulm vs. Bayern Munich (DFB-Pokal) Aug 14, 2024
    Show notes

(Finds random cliff, peers off into the distance, uses a deep voice to utter, “And so it begins”...)

    It’s time!

Bayern Munich will kick off its season the DFB-Pokal vs. SSV Ulm in a match that should — should! — see the Bavarians be considered heavy favorites. In the first real match under Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich will surely want to get off to a good start and build some momentum for what could be a very difficult campaign.

The top end of the Bundesliga — as a collective — might be better than last season and the Bavarians will have to find a way to ward off the natural growing pains that can occur under a new coach.

That all starts with Friday’s match in the DFB-Pokal against SSV Ulm. Let’s dive into it and get started with our first Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show of the season. Here is what we have on tap:

    • Where the team stands coming out of the preseason.
    • Who you might know on SSV Ulm.
    • A look at the latest news on injuries.
    • A guess at Vincent Kompany’s lineup.
    • A prediction on the match.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: Bayern Munich 3-0 WSG Tirol (Friendly) Aug 13, 2024
    Show notes

Bayern Munich downed Austrian side WSG Tirol 3-0 in Unterhaching in a match that unimpressive, but did achieve the goal of getting some younger players time, while allowing the veterans to shake off a little more rust ahead of the DFB-Pokal match against SSV Ulm.

Let’s get to it and discuss how this match played out:

    • A look at Vincent Kompany’s odd lineup and why there were not that many experienced reserves available.
    • A rundown of the scoring and substitutes. The first half was slow, but the second’s effort was better.
    • Talking Grayson Dettoni (it would have been great to see him play).
    • The game lacked any offensive cohesion and that aggressive press was absent as well.
    • A missed opportunity for Leon Goretzka.
    • Gabriel Vidović has probably performed at a level that will garner him enough interest to either be loaned again or sold outright.
    • Where does Bayern Munich go from here?

    • Will Vincent Kompany actually use Thomas Müller in an important role this season?
    • Why Harry Kane might need to adjust his game.
    • The new midfield — first impressions of Palhinha, and Joshua Kimmich’s current role.
    • What we like from Kompany so far.
    • The issue of selling Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, and how this may have unforeseen consequences.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: Bayern Munich 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur (Friendly) Aug 10, 2024
    Show notes

Bayern Munich made its way over to England for a friendly with Tottenham Hotspur to fulfill an obligation on the Harry Kane transfer deal.

    Mission accomplished.

Not only did Bayern Munich fulfill that part of the Kane deal, but it walked away with a 3-2 victory as well. There was much to discuss following the match, so let’s get to it:

    • A look at Vincent Kompany’s starting XI.
    • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
    • Serge Gnabry looks like a man on a mission.
    • Finally,, it was cool to see Harry Kane get a nice ovation from Spurs fans.
    • Bayern Munich’s first half press was an absolute game-changer, but it fell off a cliff in the second half after Kompany used subs.
    • Mathys Tel needs more playing time.
    • The backline could end up being a problem — Eric Dier might be the best of the three-headed monster.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 4: Bayern Munich will reportedly pass on Jonathan Tah...now what?; The fallout from Vincent Kompany’s plan to play Joshua Kimmich in the midfield; Watch to watch for vs. Spurs; and MORE! Aug 09, 2024
    Show notes

Given the subject matter, there is not much need for a preamble when it comes to Bayern Munich — this offseason has been filled with peaks and valleys. Let’s discuss those and a lot more on this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show. This is what we have on tap:

    • Bayern Munich is reportedly going to pass on a transfer of Bayer Leverkusen center-back Jonathan Tah — even if it sells Matthijs de Ligt to Manchester United. Or maybe not, who knows?
    • What Vincent Kompany’s plan to use Joshua Kimmich in the central midfield means for João Palhinha, Leon Goretzka, Konrad Laimer — and the biggest loser, Aleksandar Pavlović. Plus, how this affects the right-back candidates, Josip Stanišić and Sacha Boey.
    • What do we need to look for during Bayern Munich’s friendly vs. Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
    • Finally, we are taking some dragon fire straight to that House of the Dragon season finale...yup, it was terrible and confirmed that this season was all about treading water — a mortal sin for a show.
