Bad With Money With Gabe Dunn

Twice a week, Gabe Dunn (he/they) brings you a money show for the weirdos and queerdos — with an unabashedly radical point of view about finances that will help you fix your life. You won't get rich, but you will feel seen. Gabe, a queer and trans writer and New York Times best-selling author, and their expert guests take down out-of-touch money movies, TV, and books, listen to your personal financial wins and woes, try to better the world for the not-billionaires, and laugh because they just can't cry about this shit anymore. Send a question or voice memo to GabeIsBadWithMoney@gmail.com.

Piss in your tea. The "shunting." Covert incest. What makes a good boy with good, high society breeding? Plus, the absolute spooky disassociation of wealthy families. How can horror reveal the true darkness that lives within the very relevant American "dream." This conversation is soo good and so. much. deeper! than just the movie. Get into it!

Elijah calls in with a question about why their healthcare plan wouldn't be available for use at a hospital urgent care. A listener writes in worried because they are still broke even though they make more money than they ever have. Should we do a whole episode on living paycheck to paycheck? Then, more detailed information about the loophole of the trillion dollar coin and the "debt ceiling."

Breakdowns and Takedowns: 90s Kids Movie "Blank Check" with Carly Usdin Jun 20, 2023
    Show notes

Is Blank Check a transmasc allegory root?? Filmmaker and one of Gabe's besties Carly Usdin joins to discuss the 90s aspirational children's comedy Blank Check, where a 12 year old boy steals 1 million dollars and goes nuts with toys and ice cream. And also has an adult female love interest. This movie is very, very bad and very, very nostalgic. Carly and Gabe talk about capitalism in 90s movies, the connection between masculinity and money, and how we portray "business" to young kids. What toxic messages did we take in about manhood and money as children?

Correction: In this episode, we refer to Rick Ducommun as "the Canadian John Candy." John Candy is also Canadian, making him in fact "the Canadian John Candy."

More of you share your stories of job interview assignments. Then, HR tips from an HR professional, name change wins and woes, and a nice Apple review from kailajg!

Money Magic with Witch Sarah Faith Gottesdiener Jun 13, 2023
    Show notes

We get deeply magical this week as we lean into the feelings part of the podcast with Moon Studio's Sarah Faith Gottesdiener. Money is ancestral, symbolic, deeply intimate and has a huge impact on our nervous systems, especially for listeners of this show who are introverts, neurodivergent, or sensitive to conflict. Gabe is excited to get spiritual about finances! What is future-casting? What's the difference between witchcraft, manifestation, and the toxic "wellness industry" mindset? Do we have to believe in angel numbers and signs? What is "enoughness" and how do we achieve it??

    Show notes

Author of "Quitting" Julia Keller joins the podcast to talk about how quitting is good actually, the toxic myth of perseverance, capitalist striving, and grit, and the difference between quitting for a dream and quitting just to vibe. Plus, impulsivity and regret, rethinking living paycheck to paycheck, and ending the judgement around just freaking quitting everything. Set yourself free!

A note: At the end of the interview, Gabe and Julia discuss some accidental transphobia that happens in the book and it has a positive outcome. Take care while listening!
