New York Times environmental journalist David Wallace-Wells returns to Bad Faith to discuss his latest article about the enormity of Biden's latest climate betrayal: an oil project in the arctic that severely undermines the much-touted gains of the Inflation Reduction Act. What does the left go next? Do they have even less leverage than they did in 2020, and would the presence of a real Democratic primary change that?

Briahna recorded this episode with Matt Stoller last Friday as news was emerging about the failure of Silicon Valley Bank -- the 20th largest bank in the US. We discuss the roots of that crisis along with how antitrust factors into the disaster in East Palestine & prospective merger between JetBlue and Spirit Airlines. Finally, at the end of the episode, Briahna get's Stoller's take on Matt Taibbi's claim that the FTC's investigation into whether the Twitter Files disclosures compromised private user data is a witch hunt of sorts. We tackled a lot in this one. See you tonight on Callin to discuss.

On this week's premium episode, Briahna presses Representative Ro Khanna about his vote condemning socialism, whether legislation proposed to address the crisis in East Palestine goes far enough, whether his endorsement of Biden's 2024 campaign is premature in light of more progressive-aligned entrants into the race, his thoughts on Sy Hersh's reporting that the US was behind the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, whether the US should support an independent UN investigation into the sabotage, and more.

    Episode 258 - Train of Fraught (w/ David Sirota) Mar 09, 2023

Subscribe to Bad Faith on Patreon to instantly unlock our full premium episode library: http://patreon.com/badfaithpodcast

With new legislation being advanced in Congress that's ostensibly designed to address the regulatory failures that led to two Norfolk Southern train derailments in Ohio this year, it's important to understand the causes of that accident and what would authentically help. Glenn Kessler's Washington Post fact check along with some other mainstream coverage suggest that a narrative is emerging that limits the cause of the accident to just one issue -- overheating wheel bearings. Is there a risk that defining the cause narrowly will curb legislation that addresses more systemic problems, like meager staffing lax regulations for hazardous materials? David Sirota and The Lever have done the most comprehensive reporting to date re who is responsible for the crash. Together, we walk though Kessler's fact check, fact check it in return, and discuss the mainstream media disinformation campaign to punt blame.

    Episode 257 Promo - Document Review (w/ Matt Taibbi) Mar 06, 2023
Subscribe to Bad Faith on Patreon to instantly unlock this episode and our entire premium episode library: http://patreon.com/badfaithpodcast

This week, Briahna interviewed Matt Taibbi about a narrow concern she's had with the Twitter files archive: Despite the obvious value that Matt and other twitter files reporters have created by exposing links between the intelligence agencies and online censorship, is it fair to characterize Twitter's bias as against the right and indifferent to the left given how little we know about which documents have been turned over by Elon Musk and why? Unlike Musk, most whistleblowers are not the heads of the organizations they're informing on. Does Musk's investment in and control over Twitter demand more journalistic scrutiny? Is it possible to characterize the files reviewed so far without making broader claims about about the total archive that, at this point, can't be substantiated? Has there been sufficient inquiry into bias against the left, and has their been sufficient disclosure about the limitations Musk has put on the journalists who've been given access to the archive? It's a difficult and nuanced discussion. Let's debrief tonight on Callin.

This might be the best conversation unpacking this week's student debt SCOTUS oral arguments you'll hear. Fordham Law professor Jed Shugerman returns to the pod and gets some healthy pushback from Student Borrower Protection Deputy Executive Director Persis Yu. The expertise on display here is extraordinary, as the two go back and forth over the Supreme Court's likely holding with respect to Biden's student debt policy based on a close reading of the oral arguments, and whether Jed's amicus brief, referenced by Kavanaugh during oral arguments, correctly raises concerns about an over-expansion of executive power. In a sweeping conversation, Hanson explains how low liability standards all but ensure disasters like the East Palestine derailment occur, and what could be done to change that reality. As Briahna has mentioned on the podcast time and time again, Professor Hanson's Corporate Law & Tort Law classes were formative moments in her political evolution. She's thrilled to share some of those lessons on today's pod. She paid 180k for law school so you could get these lessons for free.

Should Briahna debate Ben Shaprio? And if yes, what would hep her reach the best result for the left? Also, what's the libertarian socialist take on covid vaccines?

So Briahna asked the foremost MMT economist & author of "The Deficit Myth," Professor Stephanie Kelton, on to explain what the left's approach to the debt ceiling discourse should be in her view. Also, Professor Kelton, who advised Senator Sanders in 2020, talks about her frustration with Bernie's reliance on "pay for" rhetoric, and argues that the left can't avoid teaching the public about MMT forever.

Also, what does Norman, a staunch advocate of Palestinian rights, make of Ilhan Omar's ejection from the Foreign Affairs committee? The critic of identity politics weighs in on the choice to defend Ilhan as "a black woman." President of Intercept Brazil Andrew Fishman & Jacobin columnist Branko Marcetic join Briahna for a deep dive into Brazil's version of 1/6. Was it, in fact, a legitimate coup attempt? And what role did social media play in the storming of Brazil's capital? Then we pivot to a philosophical conversation about the role Brazil's speech laws, which allow for many more constraints on speech than our own first amendment does, are a better match for a country that has recently experienced an actual military coup. Is the commitment to free speech absolutism so common in America a product of political naivety in a country that's never really experienced the full potential consequences of home grown fascism? Does the first amendment provide protections that sincerely protect minority views, or does it just create the perception that speech is free at the same time that tech platforms, news papers owned by billionaires, and corporate campaign spending neuter dissident voices? Are Glenn Greenwald's criticisms of limitations on speech occurring in Brazil overly reliant on a US lens/speech framework? Or is there a there there?

Was Van Jones right to apologize to Jewish people on behalf of Black Americans? Are Black folks being held collectively responsible in a way that differs from what is demanded of other group members when one of their own transgresses? What is it about the Hebrew Israelite ideology that's considered de facto anti-Semitic? Seattle city councilmember & Socialist Alternative member Kshama Sawant joins Bad Faith to debate the strategy, adopted by most of the squad, to vote for the union-crushing tentative agreement that averted a legal railworkers strike. Ryan Grim has been accused of "running cover" for the squad members' strategy, while Kshama Sawant argued their vote for a union voting bill was a clear betrayal. Is Ryan right to say it made sense for the squad to follow the advice of some union members who wanted them to adopt that strategy? Or is Kshama right to call that "political gaslighting?" Ryan joins the conversation about half an hour in, and it's a hot but productive conversation. you wont want to miss it.

This week, Briahna speaks to Teddy Schleifer, a journalist who covers Silicon Valley billionaires for Puck News, about Sam Bankman-Fried, the collapse of his crypto exchange FTX, and his obsession with media. Why does he keep exposing himself via high profile interviews (and DM exchanges) that amount to free depositions for the SEC and DOJ -- both of whom are investigating him? Was his emphasis on "effective altruism" part of his effort to charm the media into seeing him as a good faith actor in an unregulated financial sector primed for fraud? Is it possible to be a "good billionaire?" This conversation took a philosophical turn. Come for a play by play of his NYT DealBook interview, stay for a materialist analysis of billionaire philanthropy.

This week, Briahna speaks to co-host of This is Revolution Podcast Pascal Robert about the extreme unrest in Haiti. Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who is implicated in the assassination of Haiti's last president, Jovenel Moïse, is calling for international forces to help suppress paramilitary "gangs" in the country, and the US state department seems all to willing to oblige. But the people of Haiti feel differently -- still distrustful of the US for, among other reasons, it's connection to the assassination of Moïse, and the UN's introduction of a cholera epidemic after the devastating 2010 earthquake. Pascal walks us through the players and interests on the ground in Haiti so that we can follow the story knowledgeably as it progresses. He's joined by journalist and co-founder of Opt Out Media Walker Bragman, who has been covering what he argues is a failure of the government to offer mitigation interventions that could save thousands of lives. Has the left conceded unnecessary ground to the right as it dismisses libertarian concerns about mask mandates and vaccines? Is it unrealistic to keep schools closed with limited child care support for parents, and education delays holding kids back? Or is that a false trade off given how little has been done to make returning to school as safe as it could be, with clear masks, ventilators, and testing? The "inflation reduction" reconciliation bill has now passed. How should the left feel? Brie speaks to Matt Bruenig of the People's Policy Project about what the climate provisions really mean in the broader context of the fight against climate change, whether or not it actually addresses inflation, & why Joe Manchin finally got on board with a reconciliation bill after over a year of being pressured. Also, are they going to really end the student loan moratorium at the end of the month? And why are we experiencing historically low unemployment if high interest rates were supposed to depress business growth?

Next, an interview with Brent Welder -- lawyer and former congressional candidate in Kansas's 3rd district -- about the recent victory for abortion advocates in the state who defeated a ballot measure that would alter the state constitution to curb abortion rights.

Is the left dodging the question of when life begins, or is it actually morally unnecessary to pin that down (or peg abortion rights to viability at all)? Finkelstein also weighs in the recent debate over whether the left should support Twitter bans for hate speech, and opines on whether it's a "slur" to label someone a bigot.

This episode is the result of that experiment. Kim Iversen joins union organizer Esperanza to discuss the viral Rising segment and whether there is such a thing as a legitimate speech concern when the already vulnerable trans community stands to bear the brunt of the consequences. They also discussed the viral colloquy between Berkeley Professor Khiara Bridges & Senator Josh Hawley last week. What is that history, and how should it inform our thinking about how to unwind this quagmire? Why are people blithely talking about the nuclear "option" like it's an option on the table? Why does it sound like some people would rather see nuclear war than concede anything at all to Putin? And if the goal is to reach a wider audience, doesn't that require us to use different language than we do when preaching to the choir? At what point does changing our language implicate the underlying morals and values? And does abandoning woke language mean abandoning the populations it's meant to serve? They acknowledge that on some level Tucker Carlson was right: Democrats have long been vocal about their hope that "the browning of America" will inure to their electoral benefit. But where is the line between observing geographic trends as disadvantageous, and seeing immigration as a form of genocide? Who is responsible for the liberal discourse getting so nonsensical that it is easily co-opted and flipped by conservatives? Now, in the wake of a mass shooting event in Buffalo allegedly inspired by his ideology, Carlson is coming under even greater scrutiny. Recorded prior to the tragic shooting events, this episode explores how Tucker has achieved such popularity, how liberals have failed to respond effectively, and whether the left is negligent in largely ignoring the Tucker phenomenon. How does one push back against "replacement theory," the American Exceptionalism that wrapped up in the guise of "anti CRT" advocacy, and a narrative that anticipates accusations of racism and uses them to argue that Tucker Carlson is the real victim? Is it enough to refocus the conversation on class issues and point out that the right is doing faux populism? Law professor Eric Segall returns to the podcast along with professor Caroline Corbin of University of Miami School of Law to discuss the longer project of writing the establishment clause (e.g. separation of church and state) out of the constitution, & how the Satanic Temple might save us all. Also, in addition to abortion, are all the other rights that depend on the right to privacy now at risk? The right to use contraception? Gay sex? Interracial marriage? Last summer, the country was engaged in a robust conversation about how Democrats could reform the court to compensate for the last 40 years of conservative judicial dominance which culminated in the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh. But Biden punted on the question of court reform, vowing to host a commission on the subject instead. Well, the commission happened last week, and while it was mostly theatre, the question of court reform remains an important one. This week, we brought two ideologically diverse law professors who testified on the Biden commission together to discuss their preferred approaches to court reform, along with friend of the show Eric Segall, Ashe Family Chair Professor of Law at Georgia State; Niko Bowie, Assistant Professor at Harvard Law; and Ilan Wurman, associate professor at Arizona state join us for a spirited debate about how to improve the court, whether we should even have a constitution, and the Hungarian judicial system. Briahna caught up with consumer debt attorney and debt jubilee advocate Sparky Abraham about where we are in the fight for student debt cancellation, and what the best arguments are against means testing student debt reform. How should Briahna handle the "Harvard" question: e.g. why did you choose to go to an elite, expensive school? Why are liberals alighting with Laura Ingram and Mitt Romney on student debt cancellation? Are Democrats intentionally dangling 10k of debt cancellation because they know that's a better deal (for banks) than extending the moratorium? The book is well timed to speculation about Bernie running in 2024, and concerns voiced by many progressives that he didn't take the movement far enough. I asked Ari about a potential Bernie run, the Congressional Progressive Caucus endorsement of Nina Turner's corporate opponent Shontel Brown, and whether the left has been too easy on Bernie -- rationalizing his inflexibility as an inextricable part of his admirable consistency. Also, Ari dishes on Facebook's attempts to control the sitting senator's messaging, how Bernie's Facebook page was killed by the algorithm, and why he once had to secretly dispose of towels soaked in Bernie's blood.

Briahna speaks to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald about the relationship between billionaires and the media. Will Elon Musk buying Twitter benefit the platform, or are free speech advocates overly optimistic about the valence of his prospective influence? How did Glenn safeguard editorial independence as he co-founded The Intercept with eBay billionaire Pierre Omidyar's funding, and what happened when that independence lapsed? What does Glenn make of the recent Vanity Fair piece alleging that Peter Thiel is attempting to fund the "post left," and does one need to be consciously "bought off" to advance the interests of tech billionaires? Are the incentives set by the algorithm enough to lead even the best intentioned person astray? Also, we discuss the recent controversy over Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz's viral article about Libs of TikTok. What does Glenn make of arguments that he's the one who doxxed the account owner, not Taylor? And what does he make of accusations that he is unfairly targeting Taylor for criticism?

This week, Briahna speaks to climate scientists and activists Peter Kalmus & Rose Abramoff about what to do when marching is not enough. Both were involved in a direct action event that resulted in their arrests earlier this month, and are encouraging a turn to non violent direct action as a way to push world-saving climate reforms. I asked them whether they feel groups like Sunrise that emerged as super radical have ultimately helped to cover for the Biden administration's failures, whether strategic property damage falls within the "non violent" category of activities, what the latest IPCC report warns, extreme Don't Look Up moments from the mainstream media, and whether there's finally some willingness in the mainstream to criticize Biden. It's a climate episode that will inspire you, not depress you.

This week, Briahna spoke to two progressive congressional candidates hoping to make a difference in Northern Virginia & Washington DC -- Ally Dalsimer & Rev. Wendy Hamilton respectively. Hamilton, formerly Andrew Yang's Director of Spiritual Outreach, is hoping to unseat Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has been DC's House Delegate since 1991. Ally Dalsimer, an environmental activist, is hoping to unseat Gerald Connolly, who has been occuping his seat in the 11th district since 2009. Briahna asked the candidates not only what it will take to win, but whether they've considered how to overcome disaffection for electoralism on the left, and why anyone should commit their hard earned dollars to a congressional campaign when so may elected progressives have been disappointing as of late. Also, Briahna asked how can the left hold their candidates accountable -- using as an example the tension between Jamaal Bowman and the DSA. Do organizations influence candidates or do they kowtow to them?
