If you have a question you'd like answered on the show, let listeners hear you ask the question, by recording your listener question using your phone.

Flyings IFR STARS or Arrival Procedures91 Max talks in detail about IFR Arrival Procedures, also called STARs. These are ATC-coded IFR route for IFR aircraft flying to a specific airport. There are different kinds of clearances you can get on an Arrival. If you're cleared to "descend VIA" an Arrival, then you can descend at pilot discretion to reach all of the published altitudes for each fix.

Some key takeaways for pilots should be: 1. Read the Arrival charts ahead of time to find all altitude and speed restrictions. 2. Don't descend automatically on an Arrival unless you been issued a Descend Via clearance by ATC. 3. If you're not able to make a speed or altitude crossing restriction, notify ATC as soon as possible. 4. When loading an Arrival into your GPS, be aware that you may have to load a transition, even if you're not flying on a transition, but have been cleared directly to the fix for which the Arrival procedure is named. 5. Use the FLC or IAS mode on the autopilot to meet speed restriction while descending.

If you have a question you'd like answered on the show, let listeners hear you ask the question, by recording your listener question using your phone.

SummaryMax talks with Benjamin Morgan, Executive Director of AOPA Australia about the state of General Aviation in Australia. Number of Private pilots is declining. AOPA is working to inspire youth. They've acquired a bus full of simulators they drive around the country, and is buying low cost Cessna 150s for flight training. GA also faces regulatory challenges with CASA, which regulates all aviation in Australia.

The number of flight instructors have declined, since independent flight instructors haven't been permitted since a rule change in 1999. After that decision, flight training declined significantly. Smaller flight schools have been unable to survive, and a significant number of the larger flight schools have been bought by China, to train pilots for SE Asia. Much training is done through local Aero Clubs, but many of these no longer have any low cost airplanes for flight training.

Four Things to Know about Carbon Monoxide Poisoning88 Max talks in detail about Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and CO Monitors. 1. Know the symptoms, which include headache, dizziness, upset stomach, vomiting, weakness, confusion, and chest pain. Skin is pink or pale and the lips bright red. 2. Most CO in planes is from a faulty heating system. So shut off the cabin heat, open windows, and land as soon as possible. 3. 43 percent of poisoned patients still have cognitive problems a year after their encounter. 4. Get an electronic CO Detector. This is a perfect Christmas gift for any pilot, so treat yourself to this potentially lifesaving device. We have two recommendations including: Pocket CO KWJ Carbon Monoxide Detector $163 Sentry ADS-B Receiver with Carbon Monoxide Detector $499

A listener asked how he can get free ADS-B weather in flight without having to pay for an app. The FltPlan Go app for iOS, Android, and Windows is free. It's compatible with the Garmin GDL 50 Portable ADS-B Receiver. Get these two items, and you should have free ADS-B weather and traffic for the foreseeable future.
