In this series on racism and allyship in surgery, a panel of women surgeons discusses the role of individuals and organizations in addressing the impacts of racism on surgeons and patients.
Part 1 addresses the June 2020 AWS statement on racism and violence. The panel explores the mistakes made in the initial statement, how it was harmful to those who read it, and how listening to the response from AWS members led to a new statement. Subsequent episodes will discuss racial disparities in surgery and actions that individuals and organizations can take to address them.
The panel is moderated by AWS President and Associate Professor of Surgery at CWRU School of Medicine Dr. Sharon Stein and AWS He for She Committee Chair and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Dr. Salewa Oseni.
Panelists:
Dr. Linda Barry, Associate Professor of Surgery at UConn Health.
Dr. Cherisse Berry, Assistant Professor of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Dr. Erin King-Mullins, Surgeon at Georgia Colon & Rectal Surgical Associates.
Dr. Allison Martin, graduate of UVA Surgery residency starting Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
