This episode is special because it has BACON!

Stargate Pioneer from Agentsofshield.com calls in to help with the phones (from the gym!)

    Having Good Hardware

3:50 Jim explains how having good hardware is vital.

    Live Interviews With Skype

7:05 Kim from onthetablepdcasts.com asks about recording a skype call. Do I need a mixer?

Jim has shipped people microphones like the Audio Technica 2100 to ensure you have quality. In Kim's case she tried to connect is skype and her guest was using Skype on his phone. Her solution was to have her guest on wi-fi and connect via skype on their phone. (the guest was not technical at all).

You need a mixer when you are playing music live while you talk, if you have a co-host in the room for you. If you are recording skype with just one other co-host you can use a mixer, but you don't need it. You can do it without it.

Headset microphones will work, but they don't very good.

How Do You Find a Good Podcast Consultant?

18:27 There are so many podcast training courses now, how do you spot a fake? See if they have a podcast, and do some research. The real snake oil, looks really slick. When you don't listen to the right consultant, you find yourself having to dig yourself out of holes, and issues.

    Dealing with Insecurities

28:48 We start focusing on what others are doing and we get worried that others are better. None of those thoughts, or actions, helps you create great content. Michael Hyatt and Pat Flynn don't talk about their competition. They both mentioned Strengths Finder. when it comes to haters, you need to consider the source. I had a situation where I just had to let it go.

It's not like email. People may not see your tweet. You can check out Mail Chimp and Aweber for Email services. If you are looking for people to have a button to click and leave a message, check out Speakpipe. There is also services like Podcastvoicemail.com if you are looking for a way to receive voicemails, or you can use Google Voice.

What Should I Name My Podcast?

55:22 There are two school of thought: 1. Have a name that is completely obvious 2. Have a name that is intriguing. Ask people in your target audience, and tell them the name of the podcast you are thinking about. Then ask them (based on the name) what they think the podcast is about. If they tell you what your show is about, then its a good name. If it's intriguing, they will want to click on it to see what the show is about.

2:22 Spotify embraces podcasting. It will be only certain shows through certain vendors starting out, but later this year the gates will be opened wider.

This is more of an exposure thing than a make money thing (similar to Stitcher).

    Staying Focused While Doing Live

7:36 Have everything setup ahead of time is key. It gets hard to handle all the technology along with a chat room etc.

    Nick Sueberling's Live Call Experiencce

9:27 Nick did a live remote with a brand new piece of equipment. He ended up having lots of issues having the microphones work properly.

    The Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone
is a great microphone, but you do need to turn up the gain to have it work properly. He is using the Mackie 1402VLZ mixer. It allows two mix minus setups from a single mixer.

Mike uses a DBX 166xs Compressor/Limiter Gate to boost the microphone input.

Website Hosting Bigger Vs Smaller Companies May 15, 2015
    Show notes

    Send us feedback/questions via Text

    Website Hosting Issues

[spp-timestamp time="1:48"] Dave has been with Hostgator.com forever (you can get 25% off using the coupon code " podcastcoach " ). He loves their support, but lately it seems like he is having more and more issues. He is thinking of moving the School of Podcasting to WPEngine.com before he does jim and Dave talk about some optional website hosting companies like Maplegrove Partners.

Clammr Dicusssion with Daniel J Lewis.

Daniel is enjoying sharing other content, consuming other content (without subscribing to the show), as well as sharing his own content. Daniel is from the Audacity to Podcast What do you think of doing a show that would be super short like 20 seconds long. A short podcast makes you get to the point. [spp-timestamp time="10:45"] Is there a difference between a www.askthepodcastcoach.com and just askthepodcastcoach.com (looks like a caching issue - and it was). The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show. Dave, Jim and Daniel talk about working with smaller companies. [spp-timestamp time="17:40"] Do something nice for someone else Dave contributed to Kathy Kelly's book about Autism. Kathy successfully raised Nine thousand dollars towards to publishing of her book.

    Small Company Discussion (Continued)

[spp-timestamp time="20:10"] The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show. It will also make a list of your past show (coming in the future) and you can also change the color of the player. Workign with smaller companies that can pivot and change quickly unlike a bigger company that has to go through a committee.

Podbean Update - Now Available with a Redirect

[spp-timestamp time="25:45"] Dave is confused by their front page, and it turns out they do have a way to redirect your show podcast RSS feed. They do have support (I had to use them once when my downloads stopped working for no reason). Podcasts.com kind of dodged the question to a yes/no question. Podcasts.com came on the scene recently so I sent them: 1. How do you make money (business plan). A: Some of the podcasts have ads on their searchable directory index page on Podcasts.com page. Those ads pay for the costs. 2. Do you change my mp3 file name? 3. Do you change my mp3 ID# tags? 4. Do you change the bit rate of my show (stereo/mono/bit rate) A: 2 – 4 – Those are all part of our management portal. These are yes no questions, and when you don’t answer them I assume the worst. 5. Do you supply an RSS redirect in the event I don’t want to use your service. A: We do not at this time. 6. Is there a way to show my rss feed from my website (that I use to manage my show) instead of the RSS feed from podcasts.com A: You could create a redirect URL on your site which you can give out and have it just redirect to ours. Notice the tech support person is trying to get me to redirect my traffic to their website. (Or its a person who doesn’t understand podcasting, or they don’t want to display anything from your website). In speaking with Daniel J Lewis of the Audacity to Podcast, he had stated that he had some email exchanges and they seemed open to putting a link back to your w

Podcast Distribution Resources May 01, 2015
    Show notes

[2:45]What did you learn from New Media Expo?

People need to make sure what they say their podcast is about - is accurate. We come up with a great title, but it has nothing to do with the episode.

Dave is ready to see people blow up the podcast bluebprint, and do something original.

Podcasting For Free forced Dave to get out of his comfort zone.

Make the beginning of your show great to get people sucked in.

Its going to be interesting to see if people start growing their audience through podcast spots.

[11:52]Clammr Guys on Home Gadget Geeks

Jim will have the guys from Clammr on Home Gadget Geeks

    [16:37] Cross Platform Knowledge

Jim explains how we should know how people consume your content. This means knowing phones, tablets, etc.

    Fire tablets are really cheap.

Fire HD 7, 7" HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB - Includes Special Offers, Black

[20:00] RSS Feeds are Not For Humans

Think of your RSS feed as the paper in a player piano. Its gibberish until you put it into the piano. Likewise your RSS feed is just noise until you put it into software (like iTunes) to decode it.

Cast Feed Validator is a great service to use to see if your RSS feed is valid

    23:35 Podcasts.com Free Hosting

    DPodcasts.com a Good Idea?

This is to a good choice for a primary solution, but as a secondary point of distribution it may be valuable.

[25:30] How Should Politicians Use Podcasting?

Dave feels politicians can use "behind the scenes" and explain why they are the better candidate (instead of ripping on the other candidate).

Your Shows Format Will Evolve Apr 11, 2015

The show must go on! Dave's site is being bombarded with all sorts of bad stuff. Thanks to twitter and our community we all got together. Dave is getting prepared to the go to the New Media Expo

In regards to Spreaker and Mixlr, the Mixlr chat is better.

    [7:00] Patent Troll Defeated.

Full story. If you were worried about this, its pretty much done.

[10:15] Podcasting Fears: I might get fired.

Dave is preparing for his speach, and talks about a podcaster who was fired from his job for his podcast. The good news, he was hired by one of his his listeners.

In reality any form of social media can get you fired.

    [16:00] Podcast Life Cycle

Most people don't make a success with their first podcast, or they may change formats after a while.

We talk about how you are in control of your podcast, you can (and probably will) change the format over time.

[31:00] NMX Opportunity - Podcasters Shy Away from Doing Live Show

It was interesting that many podcasters shy away from doing a live show that might give them more exposure.

[32:00] Transferring Your Podcast From Podomatic

If you upgrade to the smallest paid plain, you can enter the code for iTunes to redirect your feed. You should also (for a few months) do the podcast in two places and tell everyone on Podomatic to subscribe in the new website. You can also contact apple at podcasts@apple.com and tell them to redirect your feed. I recommend libsyn.com for hosting or Blubrry.com (use the coupon code sopfree at either service).
