What is the rhythm factor of peels? How have chemical peels evolved from free acids to resurfacing combinations? From instigating two weeks of skin inflammation to a philosophy of strengthening the skin to peel all Fitzpatrick types, in any season, we have witnessed an evolutionary change in chemical peeling solutions and protocols. In this episode, we discuss chemical peels with the peel queen herself, Metaxia Dalikas. Metaxia is a licensed esthetician and internationally recognized expert in advanced esthetic treatments, education, and chemical peel formulation. She has worked side by side with world-renowned dermatologists and chemists for many years. She has more than 40 years in the medical and professional esthetic treatment industry and it is fair to say she knows her stuff!

Ella Cressman is a licensed esthetician, certified organic formulator, business owner, and absolute ingredient junkie! As an educator, she enjoys empowering other estheticians and industry professionals to understand skin care from an ingredient standpoint rather than a product-specific view.

In addition to running a skin care practice, Cressman founded a comprehensive consulting group, the HHP Collective, and has consulted for several skin care lines, including several successful CBD brands.

Ep 18 - Launching a New Business During a Pandemic: Crazy or Crazy Brilliant? Jul 10, 2020
    Show notes

Special Guest: Tawna Coose, LE and owner of Sassy Sphynx Waxing

This is a must-listen-to episode for anyone who is looking to make a change. The COVID-19 pandemic has given all of us quite a bit of time to reflect on our careers. Are we doing what our hearts want? Are we working where we want to work? ASCP member Tawna Coose shares her journey into entrepreneurship during the least opportune time to launch a business.

    Tawna Coose's Bio:

Tawna Coose is a Colorado-licensed esthetician and the founder and owner of The Sassy Sphynx. She has more than 10 years of waxing experience, 14 years as a professional makeup artist, and is an affiliated instructor for interns at local esthetic colleges.

Until recently, Tawna was the head trainer for one of the top waxing salons in Denver. She decided it was time to move forward and start her own salon, a dream she has had since she started down the path of esthetics.

With a passion for training and a love to watch and help others grow, she is excited for this next chapter of providing one of the best waxes offered in the Denver area and to help grow and build the next generation of 5-star wax technicians!

Tawna started her career as a model while living in Florida. It didn't take long for her to realize she loved what was happening behind the scenes much more than the modeling part. She started working for Makes and Models magazine as a stylist and makeup artist. Tawna moved to Colorado not too long after that, and decided she wanted to go to esthetics school so she could do makeup as a career.

While in school, Tawna discovered she had a knack for waxing and also loved doing it. After graduation, she continued building her makeup business and career but also got her first job right out of school as a waxing technician. Makeup was and is a success, but waxing and teaching are definitely her love and passion.

    Ep 17 - The Male Perspective in a Female-Dominated Industry Jul 07, 2020
    Show notes

What would it feel like to be a man in a female dominated industry? Join host Tracy Donley, ASCP Executive Director and guest host Ella Cressman as they have a candid conversation with male esthetician Dylan Magnuson on topics ranging from medical procedures, treatment room obstacles and treating transitioning clientele. What challenges face our male counterparts? What does it mean to provide a "safe space" to the LGBTQ community? Listen in as Dylan's observations are insightful, eye opening and inspirational.

Dylan Magnuson, LEGrowing up in a rural agricultural town in southern Colorado, Dylan Magnuson was never exposed to the world of health and beauty outside of the Walmart aisles. It wasn't until his sophomore year at Colorado Mesa University that he found his passion learning the anatomy and physiology of the skin. He later enrolled at Heritage College where he earned his associate degree in Esthetics in 2015.

Always eager to learn more, Dylan spent the next few years elevating his skills, from working in day spas and medical offices with plastic surgeons to eventually venturing out to start his own practice. Dylan realized his love for education, and in 2017 he went on to partner with Ella Cressman as a product representative and educator.

Dylan became an ingredient junkie. As a long-time cannabis lover, it was only natural that he found his way into realm of CBD skin care. Over the last 2 years, Dylan has worked passionately educating eager and open-minded estheticians about cannabis products and how to bring them into the treatment room.

Earlier this year, Dylan founded a new business that will help bridge the gaps between the health, wellness, and beauty industries, while allowing estheticians to share their knowledge and skills far beyond their current reach. The Hive, A Wellness Community will launch in the fall of 2020.

    Guest Host, Ella Cressman

Ella Cressman is a licensed esthetician, Certified Organic Formulator, business owner and absolute ingredient junkie! As an educator, she enjoys empowering other estheticians and industry professionals with knowledge and a "can-do" spirit. In addition to running a skin care practice, Ella founded a comprehensive consulting group, HHP Collective, and has consulted for many skin care lines, including several successful CBD brands.

    Ep 16 - ASCP Esty Talk: A Platform for Understanding—Inequalities in Esthetics - Part 2 Jul 01, 2020
    Show notes

It's time for an overdue conversation about systemic racism within the professional skin care industry. Recent events have inspired reflection on the role ASCP may have unknowingly played. As part of our reconciliation with this, we are providing our fellow estheticians and skin care experts a platform to discuss the inequalities and injustices they have experienced and explore proposed changes as it relates to the profession and the skin care clients we serve.

Join ASCP Executive Director Tracy Donley and Ella Cressman, licensed esthetician and fellow ASCP podcaster as they engage in some incredible stories shared by JoElle Lee and Toshiana Baker about their unique journeys into to the world of beauty. Listen and even relate as they share the challenges they've endured and the successes they've achieved along the way. Both of these women are successful estheticians that just happen to be African American.

    JoElle Lee

A highly respected skin care expert, educator ,and celebrity esthetician, JoElle Lee is the author of Esthetician on a Mission: Business Building Workbook and co-author of Multicultural Skin Treatments: Learn How to Effectively Treat Skin of Color Using Chemical Peels and Laser Treatments, which has become a trusted guide for treating diverse client populations.

In addition to being featured in numerous national consumer publications and a guest on radio programs around the country, JoElle is recognized for being the former personal esthetician to First Lady Michelle Obama during her time in the White House.

JoElle specializes in no-downtime chemical peel treatments, customized corrective facial treatments, and a wide range of laser treatments for skin of color. JoElle feels there is a gap in basic esthetic training and education when it comes to treating clients of color.

She has dedicated her career to creating innovative treatment methods that address the most common skin conditions of these clients that have proven to deliver long-lasting results without the worry of complications and downtime.

JoElle takes a natural "inside-out" integrative approach by combining noninvasive treatments and products without harmful chemicals to achieve healthy beautiful skin, and "Beautiful Skin Begins Within" is the premise on which JoElle Lee's treatments and methods are founded.

JoElle feels there is a gap in basic esthetics training when preparing estheticians to work in the skin care industry, especially for those who want to have their own business.

Over the years, JoElle has helped many estheticians and small businesse owners in the industry to solve complex problems and increase their bottom lines. With her straightforward, no-nonsense approach, JoElle's philosophy is to uncover the learned negative beliefs or negative thinking that has created a barrier or obstacle in your business, and then tear that wall down. She then uncovers the hidden assets, underperforming activities, and undervalued possibilities of your business.

JoElle teaches effective and profitable marketing strategies and how to stand out from the competition. Many of her ideas and strategies have been implemented and resulted in not only increased profits, but a more diverse loyal clientele.

JoElle's path to becoming an esthetician was inspired by another professional in the field. As someone who always had a passion for beauty and a desire to serve others, she recognized that a career in esthetics would allow her to marry both of her passions.

More than 20 years later, that hunch proved correct. Today, JoElle can be found conducting personalized skin care consultations, serving as keynote speaker at industry events, teaching classes around the country on the topic of multicultural skin, and sharing her expertise via her webinars, online courses, and social media channels.

Ep 14 - "Can You Smell the Terpenes?" with Aromatherapist, Wendy Pagaduan Jun 18, 2020
    Show notes

The smell of skin care products is important for many reasons. Humans are programmed to dislike synthetic scent because it is potentially harmful. But what do we know about the functional scent of terpenes?

Terpenes are the largest classification of small chemical compounds derived from living organisms. You may not have heard of them before, but they are all around you. Listen in as Ella Cressman talks terpenes with registered nurse, certified aromatherapist, and international speaker Wendy Pagaduan. As an advocate for clean beauty, Wendy is devoted to integrating medical wisdom, philosophy, and plant medicine into customized formulations for effective skin care and wellness solutions.

Ella Cressman is a licensed esthetician, certified organic formulator, business owner, and absolute ingredient junkie! As an educator, she enjoys empowering other estheticians and industry professionals to understand skin care from an ingredient standpoint rather than a product-specific view. She has spent many hours researching ingredients, understanding how and where they are sourced, phytochemistry, histological access, and complimentary compounds for intentional skin benefits. In addition to running a skin care practice, Cressman founded a comprehensive consulting group, the HHP Collective, and has consulted for several skin care lines, including several successful CBD brands.
