Infusing a Caring Climate Into Your School Feb 16, 2018
    Show notes

School counselors want to know how to teach young people how to care about others and prevent students from falling through the cracks. New students, sick or hospitalized students and students who lose a loved one often face challenges that, if not addressed in a timely manner, can cause the students to feel isolated and get behind in schoolwork. This can lead to absenteeism, dropping grades and/or discipline problems. See how one school has equipped students to reach out to peers to offer support during difficult times through its BIONIC (Believe It Or Not I Care) Team. More than 500 schools worldwide are implementing this program and are changing the school culture to a more caring atmosphere.

    • Learn how kids helping kids can have a positive impact on the school environment.

Help Students With Disabilities Self-Advocate Jan 25, 2018
    Show notes

Research highlights that when students with disabilities have the capacity to be better self-advocates and act in a self-determined manner, they experience significant positive educational and life benefits. Unfortunately, incorporating these skills and capacities isn’t the norm with education for students with disabilities. Although all school professionals play a role in supporting student development of self-advocacy skills and self-determination, the school counseling field embraces these ideas and incorporates them into its best practices. In particular, ASCA’s Mindsets & Behaviors are centered on three domains – academic, career and social/emotional – that rely on students building a foundation of self-determination and self-advocacy skills. Learn how you can translate this aspiration and potential, helping develop students’ self-advocacy and self-determination into a reality. Download accompanying handout.

    Learning objectives:
After attending this webinar you should be able to:

    1. Discuss ideas and research behind self-advocacy, self-determination and personalized learning.
    2. Describe the connection between these ideas and the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success.
    3. Identify the role of school counselors in effectively facilitating these skills and capacities to benefit both students with and without disabilities.

    Speaker:
Ace Parsi is the personalized learning partnership manager at the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), where he studies, writes and advocates for actions that ensure students with disabilities best benefit from efforts around personalized learning and other educational innovations. Previousl Parsi was the deeper learning project director at the National Association of State Boards of Education, policy director at the National Service-Learning Partnership and an AmeriCorps member and literacy coordinator at Fair Oaks Elementary School in Redwood City, Calif.
