    Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

Hi, I’m Dax Shepard, and I love talking to people. I am endlessly fascinated by the messiness of being human, and I find people who are vulnerable and honest about their struggles and shortcomings to be incredibly sexy. I invite you to join me as I explore other people’s stories. We will celebrate, above all, the challenges and setbacks that ultimately lead to growth and betterment. What qualifies me for such an endeavor? More than a decade of sobriety, a degree in Anthropology and four years of improv training. I will attempt to discover human “truths” without any laboratory work, clinical trials or data collection. I will be, in the great tradition of 16th-century scientists, an Armchair Expert.

Michael and Dax talk about diving headfirst into the bleeding edge of Wall Street in the 80s, getting in trouble (but not fired) for writing an article in the Wall Street Journal claiming that everyone in his firm was overpaid, and how Chevy Chase’s dad convinced him to write his first book. Michael explains being wired to live the life you want versus one the world wants you to, hating the feeling of not telling the reader everything that’s important regardless of the consequences, and taking on the predatory sports gambling epidemic with his podcast Against the Rules.

Susan Morrison (on Lorne Michaels) Apr 30, 2025
    Show notes

Susan Morrison (Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live, SPY Magazine, The New Yorker) is a journalist and author. Susan joins the Armchair Expert to discuss never wanting to subject her children to a life of moving around, marrying comedy and journalism into irreverant reporting at SPY Magazine, and loving the idea of walking through New York City as time travel. Susan and Dax talk about why humor is just the language we all speak to get by in the world, how Saturday Night Live is a monopoly for comedy, and that she could draw a line from all of Lorne’s life experiences straight to the producing skills he would later develop. Susan explains that Lorne is a master of teaching people how to be in a room, why listening for the laugh during dress rehearsal is his secret sauce, and how Lorne’s strategic instincts directly contributed to SNL being the longest running entertainment show in history.

Monica Lewinsky Returns Apr 21, 2025
    Show notes

Monica Lewinsky (Reclaiming) is an activist, writer, and podcast host. Monica returns to the Armchair Expert to discuss confronting deep trauma listening to her own voice while making her new podcast Reclaiming, the argument for not killing a darling even if it’s unflattering, and how it’s naturally harder to give the nudge into vulnerability in a conversation because she wants her guests to feel safe. Monica and Dax talk about the theory that people are preserved at the age they become famous, how all the personal inner work she did entering her fifth decade helped her grow in ways she couldn’t have imagined, and why she really dislikes the word ‘reinvention.’ Monica explains how we truly are evolving into a society of spectra rather than binaries, feeling younger because she was forced to mature faster in some areas while being stunted in others, and the acceptance she achieved turning 50 and how freeing it is to be happy and comfortable with who she is now.

    Show notes

David Sedaris (Happy-Go-Lucky, A Carnival of Snackery, Calypso) is a comedian, humorist, and author. David returns to the Armchair Expert to discuss why his Picasso painting is what he would grab in a fire, what in 50 years we will see as unforgivable, and how you can have a towering hatred for someone who has no idea. David and Dax talk about the paradox of stinky, kissable money, how he schemed an off-the-rack priest outfit, and the nuance in offensiveness. David explains that there’s nothing better than a pants-shitting story, a defense of a children’s book with no lesson, and how his whole mission as a writer is to make everyone love his mother as much as he did.
