Does 1 John 5:7 Describe the Trinity? Nov 27, 2023

Some have cited 1 John 5:7 (“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one") as evidence that the Scriptures teach a plurality of persons in the Godhead. Will the Sonship of Jesus End? Jul 17, 2023

Paul's description of the end of the age in 1 Corinthians 15:24-28 has confused many readers. The apostle wrote, “Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power” (verse 24). He later added, “And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all" (verse 28). Taken at face value, Paul seems to imply not only a distinction between the Father and the Son, but also a subordinate role for the Son.
Dr. David K. Bernard reviews what the Bible says about the sonship of Jesus Christ and explains how Paul's description of the end of the age fits within that framework.

Is Mark 16:9-20 Authentic? Nov 21, 2022

Some modern translations, including the New International Version, include the following note after Mark 16:8: “The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9–20.” A similar insertion is found at the end of John 7. It reads, “The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.”
Considering this, should Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11 be included in our Bibles? Dr. David K. Bernard explains the reasons why some modern translations include these textual notes, and why we can trust the authenticity of both Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11.

Does the Bible Condone Slavery? Oct 10, 2022

Some critics argue that the Bible is an outdated and barbaric book that condones slavery. They point out that Old Testament patriarchs such as Abraham owned slaves. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul seems to defend the practice, writing in Ephesians 6:5, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear” (NLT). Antebellum slave masters in the U.S. used these and other biblical texts to argue that slavery was God’s will.

How can Jesus, the Son of God, and God the Father be one and the same if Stephen really saw Jesus standing at God’s right hand?

Is Charging or Earning Interest a Sin? Jul 18, 2022

Exodus 22:25 says, “If you lend money to any of My people who are poor among you, you shall not be like a moneylender to him; you shall not charge him interest” (NKJV). Several other Bible passages reiterate the same theme: God prohibited His people from charging interest on their money, at least when loaned to a fellow Israelite.
Considering this, is it a sin for modern Christians to put their money in the bank or financial markets for the purpose of earning interest? Does capitalism contradict God's Word? Dr. David K. Which Old Testament Rules Apply to New Testament Believers? Jul 11, 2022

The Old Testament includes various commands that most Bible teachers would say are not applicable to Christians. For example, Leviticus 19:19 says, “Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread.” Most Christians would say these commands do not apply to New Testament believers. However, the same chapter of Leviticus also says, “Do not steal,” “Do not deceive or cheat one another,” and “Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.” Christians believe these teachings do apply to them.
How can Christians determine whether an Old Testament passage is applicable to New Testament believers, or whether it was only in-force for the people living under the Old Testament? Dr. David K. Bernard offers a set of guidelines to help Christians answer this important question.

Some Christian groups, including the Roman Catholic Church, have accepted as canonical or semi-canonical several Jewish writings dating from about 200 BC to 30 BC (and one from about AD 100). These writings are commonly called the Apocrypha. Fourteen such writings even appeared in the original edition of the King James Version. So why isn't the Apocrypha included in most modern Bibles?

Is America a Christian Nation? Mar 21, 2022

A debate currently is raging in the United States over the principles of the country's founding. On one side are those who argue that the American system of government was established on Judeo-Christian principles by men who were predominantly Christian, or at least were profoundly influenced by Christianity. Opponents of this view argue that America is fundamentally flawed because it was founded on unjust practices such as slavery and the violent exploitation of indigenous people.

In Matthew 12:31-32, Jesus referred to what has become known as “the unpardonable sin.” He said, “Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men" (NKJV). Dr. David K. Bernard has an extensive résumé. He currently serves as the general superintendent of the United Pentecostal Church International. He previously served as the founding pastor of New Life United Pentecostal Church in Austin, Texas, a thriving congregation that has planted 16 additional churches. Dr. Bernard also is the founding president of Urshan College and Urshan Graduate School of Theology. He earned both a master's and a doctor of theology degree in New Testament from the University of South Africa and a doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Texas, as well as an undergraduate degree in mathematical sciences and managerial studies from Rice University. In addition, he has written nearly 40 books, primarily on the topics of theology and church growth.

Does the Bible Teach the Doctrine of Predestination? Nov 29, 2021

Reformed theology, also known as Calvinism, teaches that God predestined some people to be saved, while others are predestined to be lost. This teaching also has been called “unconditional election,” and it is based in-part on verses such as Romans 8:29, where Paul says God knew in advance those who were “predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son,” and Romans 11:5, where Paul refers to “the election of grace.”

What’s So Special about the Name of Jesus? Nov 22, 2021

One of the distinctive doctrines of the Oneness Pentecostal movement is baptism in the name of Jesus. Whereas other Christians groups typically baptize converts “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Apostolic Pentecostals baptize exclusively in Jesus' name. Consequently, they sometimes are referred to as the “Jesus’ Name Pentecostals” or even the “Jesus Only” movement.

Does the Modern Bible Accurately Reflect the Original Texts? Oct 04, 2021

The Bible was written long ago, and the original authors have been dead for centuries. Not a single copy of the original writings remains in existence - all we have today are copies of copies. Consequently, skeptics have questioned whether the Bible we have today truly reflects what the original authors wrote.

Is Gambling a Sin? Sep 27, 2021

Is gambling a sin or just harmless entertainment?
In the United States, you can hardly visit a gas station or grocery store without being offered an opportunity to purchase a lottery ticket or engage in some other form of gambling. Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the most popular travel destinations in the country, primarily due to legalized gambling. Local and state governments frequently tout legalized gambling as a viable way to increase revenues. Suffice it to say that gambling is a popular pastime.
Pentecostals historically have opposed gambling, but the Bible never specifically condemns it. Dr. David K. Bernard reviews gambling's underlying assumptions and compares them with the teachings of Scripture to answer the question of whether gambling is an acceptable activity for Christians.

Why Do Christians Worship on Sunday? Sep 20, 2021

When God gave the Ten Commandments, the fourth command was that His people should “remember the Sabbath” and “keep it holy" (Exodus 20:8). God told the people of Israel that they should work for six days, but rest on the seventh. To this day, observant Jews worship on Saturday, the seventh day of the week.
Because of this, some argue that Christians violate the fourth commandment by worshipping primarily on Sunday. In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard responds to that accusation and shares what the Bible says about worship and the true meaning of the Sabbath.

Why Does God Heal Some People but Not Others? Aug 16, 2021

Pentecostals believe firmly in divine healing. This belief is based on Scriptures such as James 5:14–15, which says that, if a person is sick, they should ask the elders of the church to anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, with the expectation that God will work a miracle. In Mark 16:18, Jesus promised believers that they would lay hands on the sick and see them recover.
However, personal experience shows that not everyone who receives prayer or is anointed with oil is healed. Dr. David K. Bernard addresses the question of how to reconcile this reality with what God says in His Word about divine healing.

There has been much discussion in the media recently about Critical Race Theory (CRT). Some U.S. states have even banned the teaching of CRT in K-12 public school classrooms. The debate has been hotly contested and, in some instances, has spilled over into churches and religious denominations.

Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, is a professing Christian who has made it clear he will not create custom cakes that express messages which conflict with his religious beliefs. Because of this, Mr. Phillips has been sued, fined, harassed, and publicly reviled. His legal case made it all the way to the United States Supreme Court, where justices ruled in his favor. But despite this victory, Phillips has continued to face legal action for exercising his religious liberties.
How should believers in the United States respond to this and other threats against religious liberty? What can we do to help protect and preserve the religious freedoms outlined in our founding documents? Dr. David K. Bernard answers this question while sharing what he and other Apostolic leaders are doing to aid in the fight for the free exercise of religion.

God challenged the people of Israel through the prophet Malachi to pay their tithes, with the promise that, if they did, He would bless them (Malachi 3:8-12). But are New Testament believers obligated to fulfill this Old Testament command? Are those who teach that New Testament believers should tithe living under the Law and not under grace? What does the Bible actually say about how much Christians should give?

Is the Baptism of Jesus Evidence for the Trinity? Jun 21, 2021

In describing the baptism of Jesus, Matthew wrote, “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased'" (Matthew 3:16-17, NKJV).
Some have pointed to this passage and the other Gospel accounts of the baptism of Jesus as proof that the Godhead is comprised of three separate persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard refutes this interpretation and shows how these passages confirm a Oneness Pentecostal view of Jesus Christ as God manifested in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16).

Is the COVID-19 Vaccine the Mark of the Beast? Jun 14, 2021

In Revelation 13:16–18, the apostle John describes a vision of a prophetic event that has come to be known as the “mark of the Beast.” John wrote that, unless a person receives this mark, they will be unable to transact business. Over the centuries, scholars have debated what this mark might be and how it could be implemented. Recently, some have speculated that perhaps the COVID-19 vaccine might be the mark, or at least a precursor to its arrival.
In this episode, Dr. Bernard reviews what the Bible says about the Beast and his evil agenda. He also discusses whether it is biblically acceptable for Christians to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, and how technological developments could help usher in the reign of the Antichrist.

What Happens When We Die? Jun 07, 2021

What happens to us when we die? Since death is a reality for everyone, it is a question all of us should consider.
The Bible has much to say about what happens when we die. In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus told a story of a rich man and a poor beggar in which He indicated that, after death, the rich man was in hell while the beggar, Lazarus, was in a place of peace and rest. In 2 Corinthians 5:8, Paul stated that, for Christians, “to be absent from the body" is "to be present with the Lord.” However, in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17, Paul wrote that dead believers are in a state of sleep, but they will be resurrected when Jesus returns.
So what exactly happens when we die? Dr. Bernard explains how these and other Bible passages reveal the nature of life after death.
