    Another Mother Runner

A family of two podcasts to get (+ keep) you running without losing your family, friends, job, or sanity! More than 1,000 (!) back episodes to enjoy.

Every Friday on the original show (launched in 2011), host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of 14 marathons, is joined by a rotating cast of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to finding your athletic happy place, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: This ~hour-long show covers it all (and then some!).

Every Tuesday, Miles of Books drops, alternating Ellison Weist chatting fiction one week with Sarah Bowen Shea and non-fiction with Coach Liz Waterstraat and Sarah the next. In about 30 minutes, the hosts entice and entertain you with plot descriptions and pearls of training (and life!) advice to guide you to your next great reads.

Both shows are witty and conversational, making them great running partners because the AMR gals do all the talking—even on the uphills!

    Show notes

A trio of guests join Sarah and Dimity to make the Another Mother Runner Run + Refresh Retreat, hosted this April in Little Rock, Arkansas, come to life. Jonna Bass Parr charms with her Texas twang, talking about how the Retreat will lead you to the starting line of your best running season ever. Erin Taylor, co-owner of GO! Running, highlights the running scene in Little Rock, which she dubs, “an outdoor paradise in The Natural State.” She’s proof chicks are in charge in that charming city. Finally, Errin Dean talks about the amazing Cure for Arkansas event and the vibrant gO! gO! Girls, many of whom will serve as RUNbassadors during Retreat. We know you’ll be daydreaming of running (and refreshing!) in Little Rock by the end...

#144: Quick and Easy Healthy Eating Jan 17, 2015
    Show notes

The Another Mother Runner duo hosts a pair of active moms—Rebeccah “Bec” Wassner and Melissa Lasher, two of the three gals behind the Athlete Food website. The two gals share insight in how eating healthy doesn’t have to be a Herculean undertaking. Pro triathlete Bec describes her favorite gluten-free fueling and re-fueling foods, while Melissa shares an easy pre-workout energy booster. Talk turns to always-have-on-hand ingredients and sauces to spice things up. With all the yummy food suggestions, Sarah and Dimity drool through much of the second half of the podcast. #143: Tales from Another Mother Essayist Nicole Blades Jan 10, 2015
    Show notes

New Year, new book: Dimity and Sarah are eagerly awaiting the debut of their third book, Tales from Another Mother Runner, on March 3. To get you in on the excitement, every month on the podcast, they’re hosting one of the 20 contributors to the essay-filled book. Kicking off the party is Nicole Blades, a journalist, novelist, and mother runner of one in Connecticut. After a sharing her background as a runner, Nicole reads a make-you-laugh excerpt from her essay (listen closely and you might hear Sarah chortling in the background!)....

#44: Baby, It’s Cold (and Snowy and Icy) Outside! [Repeat] Jan 03, 2015
    Show notes

[NOTE: This episode originally aired in early 2013. Have no worries, Sarah and Dim will be back next week with a fresh episode!] Given the Arctic temps that have gripped Denver, it was only natural that Sarah and Dimity talk winter weather—and how to dress for exercising in it. Along the way the gals laugh over their experiences running in cold and slippery conditions; Sarah goes way back into her personal archives to talk about when she discovered her inner badass runner (when she was a long way from being a mother). Dimity shares a painful story that’ll make you wince—and think twice about venturing out onto icy conditions. And, finally, the ladies will tell you the connection between winter weather and waxing facial hair.

#142: 2014 Race Reflections from Mother Runners Dec 27, 2014
    Show notes

Even though this podcast starts out seeming like it should be called “Another Mother Swimmer,” eventually Sarah and Dimity turn to talking about running. After briefly recounting a few of their own 2014 races, the gals let other mother runners do the talking: more than a dozen women call in to share their most memorable race moments of the year. From first 10Ks, half-marathons, and marathons to encounters with a snake during a duathlon, the stories cover the gamut. While there are many laughs, you should have a box of tissues handy as many of the tales are moving. Along the way, Dimity and Sarah debate whether one gal pukes or poops roadside during a Ragnar Relay, and...

#141: Returning to Running after Fever or Flu Dec 20, 2014
    Show notes

A timely topic and, like a hearty chicken soup, it’s chock full of good things—namely advice from a family practitioner about when and how to resume running after an illness. Dimity and Sarah host Marni Nicholas, M.D., a mother runner of two school-age sons and doctor of internal medicine in New Hampshire. The good doctor starts by talking about how she practices what she preaches, leading a beginners’ 5K program in her community every spring. Once talk turns to tissues and thermometers, Dr. Marni delivers good news, which is that moderate exercise boosts immunity so a short, easy run can help chase a cold away. A fever, however, is another...

#140: When and How to Hire a Coach Dec 13, 2014
    Show notes

Coaches aren’t just for top-tier athletes: Dimity and Sarah are joined by two running coaches who talk about how a pro can get any runner or triathlete to her very best. First up: Angela Bekkala. This mother of twins and running coach in New Hampshire describes a coach as a neutral party who can help you discover your potential and prevent injury—two worthy goals in the mother runner playbook. She also talks about, “the power of trying,” and how a coach addresses the brain plus the body. Next, Briana Boehmer, the coach who guided Dimity to her Ironman success and Sarah to her recent Boston-qualifying marathon finish, describes how a coach makes good decisions for you and opens your eyes to what you can do. She sagely labels a...

    #139: How Philadelphia Marathon Was #26Strong Dec 06, 2014
    Show notes

Dimity and Sarah wrap up their involvement with the Saucony 26Strong program with a conversation with their cadets: Kelly, who completed the Philadelphia Marathon, and Alison, who spectated and cheered at Philly rather than running due to injury. Kelly recounts running the first half with Adrienne Martini by her side (alas Dimity was out due to injury as well), including a clever potty-break...

    #138: Tips for Newbie--and Returning Injured—Runners (Repeat) Nov 29, 2014
    Show notes

While Dimity and Sarah are galavanting around the East Coast, they are re-airing this podcast that originally aired in 2012. It seemed fitting, in part, because, alas, Dimity is back in a boot; in a few weeks, she'll be following the advice she shares about resuming running after an injury. Whether you, too, are coming back after some time off or you recently picked up running, you'll make good use of the loads of advice the mother runners dish. They talk about the importance of not comparing yourself to anyone else, incorporating walking breaks, focusing on distance not speed, and finding a running buddy. And the ladies tell you why they envy your fresh, only-just-begun slate.

#137: Now What: How to Shift Gears Post-Race Nov 22, 2014
    Show notes

You've crossed that finish line you've been dreaming about—and training for--for months. Now what? Sarah and Dimity answer this question with the help of Larissa Rivers, a mother runner and marketing manage of running at Strava, our fave GPS/social media app. Larissa tells about the clever social media campaign Strava has launched to encourage folks to continue setting fitness goals for the waning weeks of 2014. After Larissa, the ladies answer (recorded) call-in questions from AMR tribemates, including how to deal with the inevitable post-race funk. They endorse Phoebe’s suggestion to focus on a different hobby, yet they are slightly divided on maintenance miles. Find out why...
