    Another Mother Runner

A family of two podcasts to get (+ keep) you running without losing your family, friends, job, or sanity! More than 1,000 (!) back episodes to enjoy.

Every Friday on the original show (launched in 2011), host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of 14 marathons, is joined by a rotating cast of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to finding your athletic happy place, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: This ~hour-long show covers it all (and then some!).

Every Tuesday, Miles of Books drops, alternating Ellison Weist chatting fiction one week with Sarah Bowen Shea and non-fiction with Coach Liz Waterstraat and Sarah the next. In about 30 minutes, the hosts entice and entertain you with plot descriptions and pearls of training (and life!) advice to guide you to your next great reads.

Both shows are witty and conversational, making them great running partners because the AMR gals do all the talking—even on the uphills!

#306: The Effect of Social Media on Running Apr 06, 2018
    Show notes

Sarah and co-host Maggie talk with two guests about pros and cons social media can have on running. First up: Kelly Roberts, who burst onto the scene when she shared hilarious selfies she surreptitiously snapped of herself + hot guys during a half-marathon. Now an influencer and proponent of body positivity, Kelly provides insight and inspiration on She Can and She Did. Kelly shares how she used to hide her life story because it was tied to shame, but no more! The trio discusses the importance of being proud of where you’re at now—and of showing up and giving your all. Lots of laughs and TMI talk, including a story of epic chafing from a sports bra on a recent 16-mile run in Kelly’s quest to BQ or Bust. Then Molly Ritterbeck, Training, Fitness, & Health Director for Runner's World and Bicycling. (Phew: a mouthful!) Molly, Maggie, and SBS discuss the double-edged sword that is social media. Molly steers the conversation toward an examination of extrinsic versus intrinsic motivation, and how those are affected by online opportunities. The three examine the critical importance of honesty. The theme of “Facebook fiction” runs throughout this thought-provoking episode. In the intro, Maggie shares life updates (hint: her family will soon, once again, be on the move), and she and SBS envision a sketch cartoon entitled “If This Minivan Could Talk.” Kelly arrives on the scene at 16:36. #305: Author Alex Hutchinson on Mental Endurance Mar 30, 2018
    Show notes

Sarah and co-host Tish Hamilton enjoy a quick catch-up, and Tish tells the tale of her spring break PR. (Psst: It involves location, not time!) Alex Hutchinson, author of the newly released ENDURE: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance, joins the conversation to talk about mental endurance and the power of the mind. In calming tones, Alex explains limits are negotiable and the importance of getting out of your own way. From “the base of the mountain,” he talks about how to become aware of the internal monologue you have with yourself on a run—and how to reframe that “conversation” to enhance self-belief. Nod along as Alex discusses the “deeply worn grooves in your mind.” Validation that the mere perception of mental fatigue (sigh) can affect a run leads to an intriguing pre-race suggestion. Sarah and Alex discuss the timing of when to work out, with Alex offering a practical point sure to resonate with mother runners. He offers many bits of running advice that apply for everyday life, including singing the praises of running with someone. Nuun-drinking game: Chug every time any of the trio says, “South Africa.” Alex Hutchinson comes on board at 10:12. Save $50 off select mattresses by visiting casper.com/AMR and using promo code AMR

    #304: AMR + BibRave Crossover Episode Mar 23, 2018
    Show notes

First, Sarah interviews the Portland-based couple about their race-review site and their running backgrounds. Marvel at Jessica, whose first-ever race was 26.2 miles long—and how she’s run 19 more marathons in the intervening nine years! Then the trio shifts roles, and The BibRave duo lobs questions at SBS. Sarah covers some familiar territory, such as the AMR origin story, but also reveals some new bits about her racing background. She offers advice on juggling training with parenting duties. Tangents abound in this laughter-filled episode, including random pop-culture references like the brilliant Simpsons-Family Guy crossoverand favorite movies. #302: The Lowdown on Feeling Rundown Mar 09, 2018
    Show notes

Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin welcome Dr. Lisa Corbin, a professor at University of Colorado School of Medicine and a mom of three, to discuss the causes—and cures—of feeling rundown. As in, what to do when your get up and go has got up and went! Dr. Lisa suggests when it’s time to see a doctor about low energy, plus other symptoms to take into consideration. She shares “grandma tips” for improving sleep along with recommending a great online resource. The trio talk about anemia—the various types, as well as the cures. The good doc details signs of hypothyroidism (even after SBS repeatedly botches pronunciation of the condition!); she also says why a mother runner might still feel draggy even after getting thyroid issues back in line. Hear the pros + cons of multivitamins. This episode’s Nuun drinking game: Chug at any mention of Betty Who!

In the intro, find out a little-known fact about Amanda’s past athletic life! The expert joins the convo at 15:00.

    Show notes

There’s so much goodness from the previous ~100 episodes, we had to bundle about a dozen more clips into a second best-of episode. Host Sarah Bowen Shea kicks things off with a clip from a conversation with women’s running legend Kathrine Switzer. There’s food-talk with Melissa Clark of New York Times and Run Fast, Eat Slow co-author Elyse Kopecky. SBS and co-hosts chat with a few dude-runners, including Peter Sagal of “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me” and the inimitable Bart Yasso. Dimity pops up in two snippets, including a candid conversation about getting right with not being able to run. Nearly a dozen clips in all.

    #299: Cross-Training for Runners! Feb 16, 2018
    Show notes

Sarah and co-host Maggie Palmer converse about cross-training with Michele Olson, PhD., a professor of exercise science at Auburn University. The trio debate how to get committed runners to switch up their workouts, with Michele offering assurance that “doing something different isn’t going to make your running go to heck.” Dubbed “the Exercise Doctor,” Michele reveals the cross-training magic pill—and what the prescription for it is. She sings the praises of stationary cycling, especially runners flirting with injury. Maggie professes her love for OrangeTheory Fitness, while Sarah admits she’s crushing on Cyclebar. Dr. Olson explains the power of periodization (note: it’s a delight to hear an expert struggle to pronounce that mouthful-of-a-word!).

In the intro, laugh along with SBS when Maggie discusses having a “safe word” for bailing on a OTF class. The workout expert joins the episode at 16:30.

#298: Heart Health with a Cardiologist + Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivor Feb 09, 2018
    Show notes

It’s Heart Health Month, so Sarah and co-host Molly discuss how the topic relates to runners with Dr. Ann Marie Navar, a cardiologist and epidemiologist with Duke University School of Medicine. The trio immediately dives into the deep end, addressing whether long-distance running is good—or bad—for your ticker. The doctor tells how to reduce risk factors for heart attacks, which leads to an intriguing discussion about cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins. Answering questions from BAMRs on the AMR Facebook page, Ann Marie explains what’s up with heart palpitations. During a talk about heart rate, the cardiologist offers up the reassuring gem of, “normal is variable.” Nutrition questions are interwoven throughout the convo, including advice about coconut oil. The good doc informs us high-intensity interval training (HIIT) might be better for your heart than previously thought, and she ends on an all-important message for mother runners. The Portland duo then welcome Marla Sewall, a Dallas mother of four who was brought back to life by her quick-acting husband after she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. #Motherrunner Marla shares her harrowing story—and her amazing recovery (hint: It involves running a half-marathon a mere four months after her heart stopped for 15 minutes!).

The first guest joins the show at 14:45.

Here’s link to position paper about sudden cardiac death at races, plus how to find a CPR course in your area.

From Dr. Ann Marie Navar: I am participating in this podcast in my individual capacity, and my comments represent my personal views and opinions, not those of Duke University. Consider everything I say general information, not medical advice. If you have medical questions or concerns, talk to your personal doctor.
