3 Things We're Not Ready To Admit About The Miami Dolphins Sep 21, 2023

Show notes

The Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers are the only two teams in the NFL to start the season with back-to-back wins on the road. Miami's offense averages nearly 30 points per game, and the defense looked much better against the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football.

We're just scratching the surface of the 2023 season and there's still plenty to learn about the Dolphins. While it's hard to not be confident about the team's early season success — there are a few things we're not ready to admit about the 2023 season.

Christian Wilkins has been a foundational piece of Miami's roster since being drafted in the first round of the 2020 draft. That said, did the Dolphins make the right move by holding off on a long-term deal? The entire defense is working to learn a new system and a handful of players look to be paid soon — does keeping Wilkins off the books help avoid future headaches?

Raheem Mostert dominated against the Patriots, but should Miami still be in the market for another running back? We heard the rumors surrounding Dalvin Cook and Jonathan Taylor throughout the offseason. Does general manager Chris Grier believe this group can hold for a 17-game season?

Mike McDaniel is a fantastic offensive mind but makes a handful of moves that leave us scratching our heads. Does he have someone telling him to challenge plays or does he throw the red flag based on gut feeling? On top of that, why is Jason Sanders attempting a 55-yard field goal after a blocked kick earlier in the game?

Are The Miami Dolphins 'Set' at Running Back? Sep 21, 2023

Show notes

Raheem Mostert leads the NFL with three rushing touchdowns, is seventh with 158 yards on the ground, and averages 5.6 yards per game through two games. Re-signing Mostert made plenty of sense for coach Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins, but could the team need more to make it through a 17-game injury?

Jeff Wilson Jr. is on injured reserve for at least two more games and Salvon Ahmed suffered an injury against the Patriots, leaving Mostert and two rookies on the active roster. Can the Dolphins lean on De'Von Achane and Chris Brooks, or would it be wise to scan available running backs?

Was Miami Wise To Kick Christian Wilkins Contract Negotiations Down the Road? Sep 21, 2023

Show notes

Former first-round pick Christian Wilkins is entering the final year of his rookie contract and it doesn't sound like an extension is being discussed during the season. Miami didn't want to meet his asking price and instead inked Zach Sieler and Alec Ingold to new contracts before Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers — was it a good idea?

Sunday Night Statement: The Miami Dolphins Are Finding Different Ways to Win Sep 19, 2023

Show notes

Only two teams began the season with back-to-back road wins, including the Dolphins. Sunday Night Football featured a divisional bout with the New England Patriots, but Miami had enough answers to solidify a 24-17 win in Week 2. Coach Mike McDaniel showcased a 50/50 split with 30 pass attempts and 30 rush attempts against New England.

Raheem Mostert stole the show with 121 rushing yards on 18 attempts, his best performance since running all over the Bills last December. It wasn't the prettiest game, but Miami showcased the ability to smooth out road bumps when moving the football.

Defensively, Jaelan Phillips was sidelined, but Bradley Chubb and Andrew Van Ginkel answered the call. Mac Jones was sacked four times and Xavien Howard secured another interception against the Patriots. It's hard not to like where the Miami Dolphins are now — but we're all wondering how far they can go.

Week 2 Game Recap: Bradley Chubb's Big Game Silences Doubters. Sep 19, 2023

Show notes

Jaelan Phillips receives plenty of attention as Miami's top rusher. Sunday night, however, was a bit different as the former first-round pick was forced to miss the game after suffering an injury in practice. All eyes turned to Bradley Chubb, who didn't disappoint with seven tackles, two quarterback hits, and a sack.

There were doubts about whether Chubb was worth a high draft pick and a new contract, but Sunday's performance painted a picture of how disruptive he can be. Andrew Van Ginkel and David Long Jr. had great games, too.

Was Sunday's win over New England enough to forget Miami's inability to stop the run in Week 1 against the Chargers?

Week 2 Game Recap: The Patriots Could Not Stop Raheem Mostert Sep 19, 2023

Show notes

The Miami Dolphins flirted with Dalvin Cook and Jonathan Taylor throughout the offseason but ultimately chose to stick with Raheem Mostert as the team's starting running back. Mostert had a handful of good games in his first season with the Dolphins, and Sunday Night Football featured a balanced attack — the Patriots simply struggled to keep up.

Coach Mike McDaniel called 30 pass plays and 30 rushing plays as Mostert took the ball 18 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns. The question becomes — how long can Miami's rushing success continue before airing it out to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle?
