    Show notes

After being forced into the waters off Virginia, Royal Governor Dunmore orders one final raid up the Potomac River which fights a skirmish on July 23, 1776. By some accounts, the raid was intended to reach Mount Vernon and possibly kidnap Martha Washington. It never got that close, but it did manage to pick up Harry Washington, an escaped slave from Mount Vernon who was ready to join the loyalist cause and earn his freedom.

    ARP393 Yazoo Land Scandal Jul 12, 2026
    Show notes

In the 1790s, land speculation was one of the main ways to build your wealth. But speculation was not for the feint of heart. Cheating, theft, influence peddling, bribery, corruption, and a host of other crimes, were sometimes necessary to obtain and retain those land claims. All of that was readily apparent when Georgia tried to sell its western lands along the Yazoo River.
