American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb Flynn

A young mother is dead. Her husband says it was a tragic accident. Prosecutors say it was murder.

Caleb Flynn stands accused of killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, inside their home in Tipp City, Ohio — and the story behind the charges is one of the most disturbing domestic cases to come out of Miami County in years. Now, as the case heads to trial, every piece of evidence, every witness, and every claim will be put to the test in open court.

This is American Monster: The Trial of Caleb Flynn — a special limited series from Hidden Killers, hosted by Tony Brueski. We’re covering this case gavel to gavel: the prosecution’s theory, the defense’s strategy, the evidence the jury will weigh, and the questions that may never get clean answers. From the initial investigation to the courtroom, this series breaks down what happened, what’s alleged, and what justice looks like for Ashley Flynn and the people she left behind.

If you’ve been following this case, this is where it all comes together. If you’re just hearing about it for the first time, start here.

    New episodes throughout the trial.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 1: What Did the Drone Detect? Sep 18, 2026
    Show notes

Day 1 testimony moved from the bedroom where Ashley Flynn was found to a drone flying above the property later that morning. Together, Alex Huels and Hunter Bradburn gave jurors two very different pieces of the timeline.

Alex Huels, a Tipp City firefighter and paramedic, testified that he entered the bedroom after arriving at the Flynn home.

Huels described Ashley lying on her left side in bed with a towel covering her head. He testified that he removed the towel and observed a penetrating wound to her head.

Huels said Ashley was not moving. He checked for a pulse and found none. According to his testimony, he completed his assessment at approximately 2:42 a.m.

Tipp City Police Officer Hunter Bradburn then testified about his role as a drone pilot.

Bradburn said he deployed the drone to photograph the Flynn property. On cross-examination, he testified that the deployment began at approximately 3:56 a.m., which he described as more than an hour and a half after the incident.

Bradburn told jurors that the only moving heat signatures he observed while the drone was operating were animals.

That qualification on timing is significant because the prosecution and defense disagree sharply about what happened at the Flynn home. The drone provides a view of the property at 3:56 a.m.; Bradburn’s testimony does not establish what may have been present there earlier.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege Caleb staged the home to resemble a burglary after killing Ashley. The defense maintains that an actual home invasion occurred and investigators later blamed Caleb after rushing to judgment.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 1: Giampapa’s Body Cam Shows WHAT? Sep 18, 2026
    Show notes

Jurors in the Caleb Flynn trial saw body-camera footage from Officer Alexandra Giampapa as she described clearing portions of the Flynn home — including a garage where officers discovered a door standing open to the outside.

Giampapa, with the Tipp City Police Department, testified about her role in the initial response on February 16, 2026.

She told jurors that she and another officer cleared the garage. During that process, they found a door in the garage that was open to the exterior.

Giampapa then continued clearing the residence and checked on the minor children who were still inside the home.

EMS personnel subsequently arrived. Ashley Flynn’s mother, Jill, took the children away from the residence as police continued handling the scene.

The prosecution also played Giampapa’s body-camera recording in court. That gave jurors an opportunity to see part of the initial police response and the areas Giampapa was describing from the witness stand.

Those early observations are particularly relevant because the condition of the Flynn home sits directly inside the disagreement between the prosecution and defense.

Caleb Flynn, 40, has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37. Prosecutors allege Caleb staged the home to create the appearance of a burglary after killing Ashley.

The defense tells jurors something fundamentally different: there really was a home invasion, Ashley was killed during it, and investigators eventually settled on Caleb rather than continuing to pursue that explanation.

Giampapa’s testimony adds another firsthand police account — and another body-camera record — of what officers encountered during the first response to the Flynn home.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 1: What Did the Body Cam Miss? Sep 18, 2026
    Show notes

The first officer inside the Flynn home testified that Caleb Flynn was not treated as a suspect when police arrived. But the jury also learned that the officer’s body camera did not capture his first conversation with Caleb.

The prosecution began its witness testimony with Beth Hull, director of the Miami County Communication Center. Hull testified that she retrieved the records and audio surrounding Caleb’s February 16, 2026 call for help.

The records placed that 911 call at approximately 2:31 a.m., and prosecutors played the recording for jurors.

Sgt. Corey Rismiller of Tipp City Police testified that he arrived about five minutes later, at 2:36 a.m. Rismiller said he searched the house for anyone else and found no one. He then entered the bedroom where Ashley Flynn was located.

Rismiller testified that Ashley had significant trauma around her head and was deceased. He secured the house, advised detectives of the death, and EMS personnel then entered the scene.

He also testified that Caleb was never treated as a suspect by him during that initial response.

Cross-examination turned to Rismiller’s experience and his body camera. He testified that he had handled one prior homicide in Tipp City, in the early 2000s.

More importantly for the record jurors now have, Rismiller said his body camera did not automatically activate. He manually turned it on after realizing it was not recording. His first conversation with Caleb therefore exists only through testimony, not body-camera footage.

That missing recording does not establish what was said in either direction. It does mean jurors will have to evaluate Rismiller’s account without video of that initial exchange.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege he killed his wife, Ashley Flynn, and staged the scene as a burglary. His defense maintains that Ashley was killed during an actual home invasion.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 1: Emily Smith Admits WHAT? Sep 18, 2026
    Show notes

The opening statements in Caleb Flynn’s trial immediately put his marriage to Ashley Flynn in front of the jury. Defense attorney Emily Smith acknowledged Caleb had an affair and lied about it — then told jurors exactly why she believes that admission is not proof of murder.

“A man can fail as a husband without being a murderer.”

That was Smith’s line as the defense began answering the case presented by Miami County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Watkins.

Caleb Flynn, 40, is charged with 11 counts, including aggravated murder, in connection with the February 16, 2026 death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37. He has pleaded not guilty to every charge.

Prosecutors allege Caleb killed Ashley and meticulously arranged the scene inside their Tipp City home to make it look like a home-invasion burglary. The defense says the burglary was real, Ashley was killed by an intruder, and investigators rushed toward Caleb instead of following the evidence wherever it led.

Smith’s decision to acknowledge the affair puts an important distinction directly in front of jurors. The defense is not asking them to approve of Caleb’s behavior as a husband. It is asking them to decide whether prosecutors can prove he committed the crimes charged.

That sounds obvious because, legally, it is. Courtrooms still have a way of forcing twelve people to separate behavior they may dislike from evidence that proves a specific criminal charge. That separation is now part of the defense strategy.

Judge Jeannine Pratt also instructed the jury as the trial moved from jury selection into the presentation of the case.

Watkins and Smith have now drawn the competing versions. Prosecutors say the burglary scene was staged. The defense says investigators mistook a husband with damaging secrets for the man who killed Ashley. Evidence now has to settle that dispute.

Caleb Flynn Trial: Ashley Flynn Deserved More Than a Footnote in Her Own Story May 03, 2026
    Show notes

Before the 911 call. Before the bodycam footage. Before the indictment. There was Ashley Flynn.

A Tipp City native. Tippecanoe High School class of 2006. Lee University class of 2010. She came home and stayed. Elementary school teacher. Substitute teacher. Seventh-grade volleyball coach. Bible instructor at LifeWise Academy. Mother of two daughters who were inside the house the night she was killed. She was thirty-seven. Eight days from her birthday.

Ashley taught other people's children how to be better. She showed up for seventh graders on a volleyball court and for families inside a church. She was known for her smile, her warmth, and the kind of presence that made people feel seen. When she was gone, Tipp City did not hesitate. A GoFundMe passed $175,000. More than 1,400 people donated. Benefit dinners, T-shirt fundraisers, businesses redirecting profits — everything funneled toward making sure her two elementary-age daughters are taken care of. The church cancelled the public memorial and held a private service. Ashley's family retained lawyers, went to court, and built legal protections for those girls without waiting for a verdict. They moved first. They moved fast. And they moved for the people Ashley loved most.

Her husband Caleb Flynn faces an eleven-count indictment — aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence, and two counts of intimidating a witness. He called 911 on February 16 and reported a home invasion. He was arrested three days later. His bond sits at $3.5 million. He is barred from contact with his daughters. According to court filings submitted by Ashley's family, he was the primary beneficiary on her life insurance policy. He had left ministry and was working as VP of Sales for her family's commercial flooring company.

Thirteen years ago, he looked into an American Idol camera and called Ashley "very, very pretty." That clip is still on YouTube. So is the distance between who he said he was and what prosecutors say he did.

Flynn has pled not guilty. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Trial is approaching. Ashley's community is making sure her daughters are not left behind — because that is what Ashley would have done for someone else's children.

    Show notes

This is the comprehensive trial preview. Every procedural development, every strategic move, every piece of publicly known evidence -- assembled in one place before the jury is seated on May 4.

We walk through the full 11-count indictment and what each charge tells you about the prosecution's theory. The physical evidence from the affidavit. The scope of subpoenas targeting the FBI Lab at Quantico, Apple, Verizon, WhatsApp, Meta, Google, Microsoft, financial institutions, and insurance companies -- and the two that still haven't complied. The expert report the prosecution received on April 11 that triggered a continuance fight between the state and the defense.

We cover every significant pretrial motion: the non-dissemination order filed and withdrawn, the judicial conflict of interest, the jury view motion. And we cover the moment that sealed the trajectory of this case -- the prosecution offering a plea of guilty as charged on all counts, the defense refusing, and Judge Pratt's response: "OK then, we're going to trial."

Part 4 of four. The final word before the courtroom opens.

    Caleb Flynn Case: Ashley Flynn's Story | Part 3 Apr 29, 2026
    Show notes

This is the episode that focuses entirely on Ashley. Not the crime scene. Not the charges. Not the courtroom maneuvering. Ashley Flynn, the person.

A Tippecanoe High School graduate, class of 2006. Lee University, class of 2010. She came home to Tipp City and wove herself into the fabric of the community -- teaching, coaching seventh-grade volleyball, serving at church, raising two daughters on a quiet cul-de-sac. She worked at LifeWise Academy teaching bible lessons to other people's kids. She was eight days from her 38th birthday when she was killed.

We cover the community's response in full: the GoFundMe that crossed $175,000, the cancelled public memorial at Christian Life Center, the family's decision to retain attorneys and fight in court to protect the children's financial future. And we talk about the daughters -- carefully, respectfully -- because they are at the center of every motion, every fundraiser, and every decision being made in the wake of their mother's death.

Part 3 of four. The trial will determine what happened inside the house on Cunningham Court. But the people who loved Ashley already know what was lost.

Caleb Flynn: The Image and the Man | Part 2 Apr 29, 2026
    Show notes

This episode is the deep character study. Caleb Flynn's full biography -- from Braham, Minnesota to Lee University to worship leadership across two states to the American Idol audition that preserved his image on video forever.

We trace the career arc that took him from leading congregations of over a thousand to working for his wife's family's flooring company. The brief detour into life insurance sales. The LinkedIn profile that still features his Idol photo. And the financial filings that came after the arrest -- the life insurance policy listing him as primary beneficiary, the family's demand for financial records, and the court's decision to share investigative documents with the children's guardians.

At the March arraignment, Judge Stacy Wall raised bond to $3.5 million. Caleb was shackled at the hands and feet. A dozen of Ashley's family members sat behind the prosecutor. And a no-contact order barred him from any interaction with his own daughters.

Part 2 of the four-part Caleb Flynn series. The public image versus the prosecution's portrait. The gap between the two is where this entire case sits.

Caleb Flynn: The Night on Cunningham Court | Part 1 Apr 28, 2026
    Show notes

At 2:30 a.m. on February 16, 2026, Caleb Flynn called 911. He reported a burglary and said his wife had been shot. The call lasted nearly eight minutes. He was sobbing. He was frantic. He told the dispatcher his daughters were asleep down the hall and he didn't know if the intruder was still inside.

Ashley Flynn, 37, was found dead in the master bedroom with two gunshot wounds to the head. Two shell casings on the floor. The center console of Caleb's truck -- where he told police he stored his handgun -- was open. And a garage side door was open but blocked by a refrigerator that, according to the affidavit, would have had to be physically moved to get through.

The criminal complaint filed after Caleb's arrest stated that officers had been "led astray by the staging of the crime scene." He was taken into custody 82 hours after the shooting. He has pleaded not guilty to 11 counts including aggravated murder and faces life without parole if convicted.

This is Part 1 of our comprehensive four-part series on the Caleb Flynn case, released ahead of the May 4 jury trial. In this episode, we reconstruct the night of February 16 in full -- the 911 call, the bodycam footage, the crime scene details from the affidavit, the voluntary police interview, and the arrest that shattered a small Ohio community. Everything that follows in this series starts here.

Ashley Flynn Deserved the Truth: Listener Questions Answered Apr 21, 2026
    Show notes

She was a volleyball coach who showed up for other people’s kids every single day. A substitute teacher who walked into classrooms with a smile that colleagues say lit up the building. A mother of two little girls who were sleeping peacefully down the hall on the night prosecutors say their father shot her in her bed and then called 911 pretending a stranger did it.

Ashley Flynn was thirty-seven years old. And according to the eleven-count indictment against her husband Caleb Flynn, she was killed inside the one place she should have been safest — her own home, by the man she married.

Caleb, a thirty-nine-year-old former American Idol contestant and worship pastor, has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence, and two counts of witness intimidation. Investigators say the crime scene was staged to look like a burglary. His bond sits at three and a half million dollars. His trial is set for May 4.

The questions pouring in from this community are the ones that keep you up at night. How do you reconcile the man who stood on a stage and told the world he loved his wife more than anything with the man prosecutors say executed her while their daughters slept? What do the witness intimidation charges mean for those two little girls? And is the justice system equipped to see past the charm of a man who spent his career performing for an audience?

Robin Dreeke and I take your questions — because Ashley’s community deserves answers, and her daughters deserve a world that refuses to look away.
