    American Heroes Network

It has been said that we are only a generation away from forgetting our history. Disabled American Veterans struggle every day to overcome life-changing sacrifices. Their stories provides a vital part of history that has contributed to our American tradition.
American Heroes Network provides a way for individuals, corporations and small businesses to support our Heroes by helping our veterans and their families rebuild their lives. They help aim our veterans, looking for jobs, in the right direction, help provide homes for our troops, assisting individuals and their families who have been severely injured while serving in the U.S. military and providing scholarships for families of our Fallen Heroes.
This will be a weekly hour long show joined by our military heroes and people and organizations that make a difference.

CAN A PHONE APP REALLY SAVE THE LIVES OF OUR VETERANS'? Jun 11, 2013
    Show notes

CallApp is a smartphone App that removes a lot of the decision making for anyone at risk. The ability to intelligently route someone to a person of their choice is its biggest feature, especially during a moment of crisis. CallApp is a simple application designed to reduce the risk of suicide. When a button is pressed a series of user options become available. For example if “Live Support” is selected, CallApp identifies the users location and scans a list of pre-installed support providers in their area using its in-built location tracking system. If that option is selected CallApp dials through to support and if the call is not answered within a certain time period it automatically scans through an alternate list of pre-installed numbers. In the unlikely event CallApp is unable to connect, it will automatically offer call-back assistance or provide a list of alternative contacts to choose from.

“Unique Challenges Faced by Parents as Caregivers to their single Wounded Warriors” Jun 04, 2013
    Show notes

Many of us send our children off to war, hoping nothing happens. As a parent, I was prepared for the worst—the ultimate sacrifice of my daughter—death. But I never anticipated that her life-threatening injuries would have had the impact it had on our family. While many married caregivers or spouses of the WWs have rights and benefits and willing accepted their spouses military career, parents do not. We raise our children and let them go. Unfortunately, when the child is a single service member (from the army, navy, air force, marines, national guard or reserves), the parents are called upon to help in their recovery. Never did I anticipate a three-year long stay at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. And never, did I anticipate the struggles that had to be fought to get the best care for my daughter. My experience and tenacity often times pushed me up against bureaucratic inertia and uncomfortable/questionable situations with the military and their way of doing things.

Homers Heroes with Daniel Morgan, President Apr 30, 2013

We strive to place well trained service and companion dogs with veterans who have physical or mental injuries, at little to no cost to the veteran. Here at Homers Heroes we find dogs that meet our needs from local shelters. These dogs under go all betting, basic and advanced obedience training and then are trained to the specific tasks the veteran needs them to do. We then invite the veteran to attend a 2 week course to learn about their new service dog and to learn proper handling and training of the dog. This process can be expensive with cost anywhere from $5000 to $30,000. Our program is funded entirely from donations from individuals and businesses and 100% goes toward training and placing the dogs with veterans. Donations are tax deductible.

After suicide attempt, combat veteran finds his voice Apr 16, 2013
    Show notes

Just before dawn, Andrew O’Brien flipped his laptop open, turned on his webcam and prepared to tell the world the most personal story of his life. On the first try, the lump in his throat caught his voice and tears welled in his eyes. He tried again, he said, but the words kept jumbling together. His mind raced back to the night his world collapsed, to the horrible mistake he almost made. On his fourth try, O’Brien looked into the tiny keyhole of the webcam: “So here’s the story,” he said, his voice steady now. “I snapped one day and decided to take every pill I could get my hands on.” Four minutes and 23 seconds later, the 24-year-old finished the video. But he hesitated before uploading it to YouTube. There was a reason no other soldier he knew of had ever gone public with their suicide attempt. It’s a taboo subject in general and especially among young soldiers, who too often view talk of feelings as a sign of weakness.
