#202 This (Primary) Season’s Most Shocking Elimination Yet Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

Amanda, Alise, and our new host Kaitlin Byrd are back to talk about all the crazy sh*t happening in the news, starting with a totally real fairytale about what can happen if you actually pay employees a living wage. The Main News is all about the election this week, starting with South Carolina’s primary results and ensuing changes to the race. Should Biden be happy with his landslide, or nervous he didn’t win by more? What does the South Carolina primary tell us about these candidates’ ability to shore up African American support? Then it’s all about the dropouts: Tom Steyer, Pete Buttigieg, and Amy Klobuchar. Who will their supporters vote for now? For one more thing we break down expectations for Super Tuesday, which we’ll cover with a special Wednesday episode this week.

#201 Trump (Dumb) And Pence (Dumber) Take On Coronavirus Feb 27, 2020
    Show notes

Alise and Bryan are back to talk about all the crazy sh*t happening in the news, starting with the Pope telling Catholics to give up trolling for Lent. For the Main News, it’s all about the coronavirus. Why is Trump openly contradicting the CDC and claiming everything is fine? They also look into VP Mike Pence’s past to show why he's uniquely unqualified to lead the coronavirus task force and follow up with a fitting #WoebackThursday. For the Election Section, they cover Tuesday’s debate and predictions for the South Carolina primary on Saturday. One More Thing is all about naming and shaming the four congressmen who voted against making lynching a federal hate crime.

Then, Bryan is joined by Rep. Ro Khanna of California, who this week introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to add an additional “(X), Unspecified” sex marker category for U.S. passports. They discuss how the bill impacts nonbinary and gender nonconforming Americans and their ability to travel. Khanna, who also co-chair’s Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign, shares why he believes a Sanders nomination will help, not hurt, Democrats’ chances in November.

#200 Why Liberal Media Can’t Even With Bernie Sanders Feb 24, 2020
    Show notes

Amanda and Sami are back to talk about all the crazy sh*t happening in the news, starting with the breaking story that Harvey Weinstein has been convicted of rape and sexual assault. What does this victory mean for the MeToo movement? For the Main News, they dive into the shifting narrative around Russian interference in the 2020 election. Who are they helping, how are they doing it, and why? For the Election Section they cover Bernie Sanders huge victory in Nevada and a surprising new national poll. For One More Thing, they address Republican backlash to the fact that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a congresswoman, dared to dress nicely for a television appearance.

#199 Elizabeth Warren, First Of Her Name, Slayer Of Bloomberg Feb 20, 2020
    Show notes

Sami, Alise, and Bryan are back to talk about all the crazy sh*t happening in the news, starting with the messy Las Vegas debate in which Elizabeth Warren tore out Michael Bloomberg’s spine and used it as a lasso to tie up the other candidates. Will Liz’s two-hour own of nearly every other candidate launch her back into the top tier of candidates? We also cover Buttigieg and Klobuchar’s mutual disdain for each other and what critics think Bernie Sanders should do to address his supporters’ vitriol towards those who criticize him. They also cover Trump’s week of generosity in which he handed out pardons to convicted white-collar criminals, national security positions to novices, and might have offered to pardon Julian Assange if he promised to cover up Russia’s role in Wikileaks.

#198 The Nightmare Scenario For The Democratic Primary Ft. Molly Jong-Fast Feb 19, 2020
    Show notes

Amanda sits down with author, political commentator, and Daily Beast editor at large Molly Jong-Fast to check on the somewhat sorry state of the Democratic primary. Molly discusses her recent op-ed for the Washington Post titled “Joe Biden did this to himself. And to the rest of us,” in which she makes the case for why Biden might never have been the “electable” candidate so many dreamed of, and might be the spoiler that mangles the race for everyone else. We also check in on the general state of the race and consider an alternate reality where Biden never even entered in the first place. Finally, they discuss Bloomberg’s late entry and surge in the polls, and consider a few nightmare and best-case scenarios for the Democratic Convention in July.

#197 Are We On Our Way To A Contested Convention? Feb 13, 2020
    Show notes

Amanda and Bryan are back to talk about all the crazy sh*t happening in the news, starting with a big court decision out of Australia. The main news is all about Trump’s impeachable offenses… no, not those ones. Trump’s intervention in the Justice Department’s sentencing of his longtime friend and advisor Roger Stone is being referred to as his worst abuse of power yet. If only there were a remedy for such offenses… The Election Section is all about results out of New Hampshire and if the Buttigieg/Sanders victories are actually bringing them closer to the nomination. This brings them to One More Thing, where they break down the Democratic nomination process and what happens if no candidates make it to the convention with enough delegates to be nominated.

#196 Is Amy Klobuchar The “Parasite” Of The Democratic Primary? Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

Sami and Amanda are back to talk about all the crazy sh*t in the news, starting with the Oscars and why “Parasite’s” celebrated win proves we should use ranked-choice ballots to choose our presidential nominees, too. We also dive into impeachment’s aftermath, featuring the Friday Night Massacre in which Trump fired two witnesses who implicated him in abuse of power, including a decorated war hero. In the Election Section, they break down Amy Klobuchar’s surge, Buttigieg’s billionaire problem (is it really a problem?) and Warren’s chances going into New Hampshire. For One More Thing, they talk through how Trump’s budget proposal completely contrasts claims he made in his State of the Union.

    Show notes

They also discuss Trump's batty address to the nation and fact check some of his most offensive claims. For the election section, they discuss the Iowa Caucus chaos that spurred a nationwide headache. In one more thing, they share predictions for tomorrow’s Democratic debate.

#193 I’d Like To Speak With A (House) Manager, Please Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

Alise and Bryan are back to talk about all the crazy sh*t that’s happening in the news. For what’s getting them through the week, Bryan shares the significance of Lil Nas X’s Grammy showing and Alise covers some very democratic sheet cakes. For the Main News, we look at (maybe?) the final days of the Senate impeachment trial. Are Trump’s lawyers actually arguing he’s allowed to corrupt his own election? They also get real about the chances we’ll actually hear from witnesses in the trial and why John Bolton isn’t our hero. For one more thing, they run through what to expect after Brexit finally goes down for real this week. From pet passports to pensions, here’s what Brits can expect before the divorce is final later this year. Finally, Bryan is joined by Marti G. Cummings, candidate for New York City Council, to talk about queer representation in local politics and potentially becoming the city’s first non-binary councilperson ever.
