What's Next in US Presidential Race? Aug 23, 2024
    Show notes

The Democratic National Convention concluded on Thursday night with Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepting the Democratic Presidential nomination, making her the second woman in American history, and the first Black and South Asian woman to accept the nomination. Hers is one of the shortest US Presidential campaigns – President Joe Biden dropped out of the race just over one month ago – and one of the most exciting. Evan Osnos, author of "Joe Biden: The Life, the Run, and What Matters Now," joins the show to unpack Harris’ speech and preview what’s coming up in the race.

Also on today's show: Jaime Harrison, Chair, Democratic National Committee; "Job" playwright Max Wolf Friedlich and actors and Sydney Lemmon; musician, songwriter and producer Jack Antonoff

    Show notes

It's been a cathartic week in Chicago for Democrats, who will wrap their convention tonight with the historic nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris. But well before the last balloon falls, Democrats are steeling themselves for a tough fight ahead, especially when it comes to the economy. Stephanie Flanders is the Head of Economics coverage at Bloomberg, and Leslie Vinjamuri is Director of the US and Americas program at the international affairs think tank Chatham House. Senior White House Reporter Kevin Liptak on DNC Aug 21, 2024
    Show notes

Halfway through the Democratic National Convention, tonight the VP nominee Tim Walz pitches himself to the biggest crowd of his career, reaching out to a public around the nation that doesn't fully know him yet. He has a tough act to follow, because last night former President Barack Obama and his first lady Michelle both delivered barnstorming speeches that tried to recapture the energy around his 2008 campaign. Both also insisted that despite surging enthusiasm, it's going to be a very tight race. We get analysis from Chicago with reporter Kevin Liptak.

Also on today's show: actors Martin Sheen and Melissa Fitzgerald discuss her new book, "What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing"; Mesa, Arizona Mayor John Giles; US House Democrat Veronica Escobar

A State Senator's Warning About Donald Trump Aug 20, 2024
    Show notes

On day two of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago the party is rolling out the big guns again to whip up support for their nominee Kamala Harris. However, the party will need to mobilize more than just loyalists if it's going to beat Donald Trump to the White House in November. Michigan's Democratic State Senator Mallory McMorrow last night warned delegates of the dangers of re-electing him, and came with a gigantic prop, the conservative blueprint known as Project 2025. She's a rising star in the party and she joins Christiane from Chicago.

Also on today's show: correspondent joins us from Tel Aviv to update us on Sanaa's story and discuss the hopes for a ceasefire; Tanya Haj-Hassan, Co-founder, Gaza Medic Voices; Michael Moritz, Senior Adviser, Sequoia Heritage

US House Democrat Dean Phillips Aug 19, 2024
    Show notes

It's all aboard and full steam ahead as the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago. Across the world, U.S. allies -and antagonists- will be watching carefully to get a measure of Kamala Harris' policies and grip on the election. Few could have foreseen the twists and turns that led here, but Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips got pretty close. An early skeptic, he expressed concerns about President Biden's age and ability to run and win a second time and even decided to challenge Biden by running against him in the primaries earlier this year. He joins the program from Chicago.

Also on today's show: Jaha Dukureh, Founder, Safe Hands for Girls; Liz Goodwin, Congress Reporter, The Washington Post

Ahead of DNC, Contrasting Harris and Trump's Foreign Policies Aug 17, 2024
    Show notes

First up, we're diving into next week's Democratic National Convention, where President Biden will endorse Kamala Harris as the next Commander-in-Chief. Rahm Emanuel, Biden's ambassador to Japan, joins Christiane to discuss the successes of Biden’s diplomacy and what a Harris foreign policy might look like.

Then, we'll explore what a second Trump term could mean for American diplomacy abroad. Former Pentagon official Elbridge Colby shares why he believes the Trump-Vance agenda could help the U.S. avoid World War Three and why it's imperative to have Europe take the lead in supporting Ukraine.

Next, Anna Ardin, the Swedish woman who accused Julian Assange of sexual assault discusses Wikileaks legacy, and recounts her trauma, and how her life has changed since the assault in her new book, ‘No Heroes, No Monsters.'

We also hear from Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation, as he reflects on his transformative work in philanthropy and how his personal life story has shaped the foundation’s mission to fight inequality.

Marking three years since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, Christian revisits the severe rollback of women’s rights with a focus on the restrictions faced by women anchors, who are now banned from showing their face on camera.

Finally, Christiane speaks with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado about the recent crackdown by Nicolás Maduro on dissidents following a contested election, as she shares her story from a secret location.

What About the Climate? Aug 16, 2024
    Show notes

This week US presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have been digging into economics, talking about inflation and issues like price gouging. So far in their campaigns, though, one big topic has gone almost unmentioned: climate. Bianna Golodryga speaks to Gina McCarthy, who served as EPA administrator and then as inaugural White House National Climate Adviser, where she helped craft the Inflation Reduction Act.

Also on today's show: Caitlin Dickerson, Staff Writer, The Atlantic & Lynsey Addario, Photojournalist; Demis Hassabis, Co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind
