S2E03 – Bullets and Bug-out Bags: The Doomsday Prepper Show w/ Bradley Garrett Mar 19, 2021

Blame it on the Pandemic, Zombie movies or video games, but today’s doomsday preppers are a far cry from the lonely survivalists, living on the fringes of society with an irrational suspicion of government surveillance. Today they include young professionals, with timeshares in luxury underground condo bunkers and are the anti-thesis of the persona that populated the public imagination about 10 years ago. So what made preppers go mainstream? Was it politics, natural disasters, or inspiration from television and film? We talk to Bradley Garrett, social geographer, worldwide adventurer and author of Bunker: Preparing for the End Times (Scribner, August) about the rise of prepper culture in pop culture.

So grab your bug out bag and hunker down for another stellar episode of Alt.Pop.Repeat.

Surprise! They don’t!

S1E12 – Where Did Foodies Come From? (w/ Zane Caplansky) Dec 25, 2020

You would think saying “I’d muck that” means something very different than eating, but hey, guess what here we are talking about mucking, all the people who muck as a hobby and… in the middle of it is Zane Caplansky.

In this little holiday episode, Chrissy & Marie get into foodie culture – a world ubiquitous with Instagram. But, we looked into it and – Surprise! – It turns out foodie culture goes back hundreds of years, but it could never cross over into pop culture in the way that it needed to in order to be the stuff that #foodporn is made of.

Unsurprisingly, muckbang is apart of the whole #foodporn thing – and I’m so sorry it really sounds like a sex thing… it apparently isn’t… but it kind of is…

Anyway! We “dig in” (haha) to all things food and foodie related with the best guy to talk to about this – Zane Caplansky the King of smoked meat, the purveyor of fine mustards, the bro you want to know from Food Network, the host with the most from the radio and all around great guy.

Zane’s no stranger to the world of food, his deli served up some of the most memorable slices of smoked meat to the likes of Beyoncé, Guy Fieri, Geddy Lee and, of course, Marie & Chrissy (not to name drop but…). Caplansky’s Deli was the place everyone loved to go and when it unexpectedly shut it’s doors – it left legions of people to speculate when it will re-open.

Zane’s connection to foodies comes with his own honest love for food and in the episode we discuss what makes a foodie, if it’s an elitist culture and even if foie gras can be as satisfying as some popcorn and Nibs.

So tune in and enjoy the end of Season 1!
Season 2 kicks off in January!

Where does popculture come from? It isn’t a fluke thing, pop culture has deeper roots than you think. We see it in mainstreams film, television, video games, memes, brands and symbols, sports, slang, dance, fads and food.

Before it hits the mainstream, it has history. Alternative culture, subculture and counter culture, all combined with a little pop and then you have the stuff of legends.

    There’s a Sync

It’s not just about what was popular in the past and the new way it’s popular now, but it’s about the connections between the two. We call these “Syncs”. In each episode of Alt.Pop.Repeat we’re mapping the syncs – from #RaidArea51, the rise in popularity of crystals, astrology – heck, even twerking.

This is the secret history of all our favourite things.
