Episode 300: Alright Scary – “Jennifer’s Body” (2009) Oct 17, 2021

Show notes

“Jennifer’s Body” is so much more than a 2009 version of “Species,” but it does feature one hell of a femme fatale in the form of Megan Fox. Amanda Seyfried meanwhile is a final girl with depth whose vengeful nerd rage rivals Carrie White in the final act. Plus we got a handful of great moms, a perfectly awful rock ballad, and not enough male butts. Plus: a jawbreaking omission, an Elizabeth Holmes impression, an appreciation of Diablo Cody’s journey to an EGOT and plenty of Marying out on all of the metaphors and allegories of this gory foray into female friendship. Episode 299: Alright Scary – “Aliens” Oct 10, 2021

Show notes

James Cameron’s bombastic follow up to “Alien,” equal parts action and horror movie, may make us yearn for the Nostromo a bit, but more importantly it features our favorite cat owning, flamethrower wielding space mom, Ellen Ripley. The Extended Special Edition of “Aliens” gives us even more time in Act One with Ripley and Jones before pairing her up with eye candy like Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn and Jeannette Goldstein, to say nothing of one particularly beguiling robot. We’ve got mixed feelings on Newt, lots of questions about aliens taking elevators, thoughts on the subsequent sequels and prequels in the series, and unending praise for Sigourney “Susie” Weaver in an Oscar nominated performance. Episode 298: Alright Scary – “Misery” Oct 03, 2021

Show notes

Kathy Bates earned a much deserved Oscar for playing delusional and occasionally demented devotee Annie Wilkes to poor James Caan’s critically injured Paul Sheldon in “Misery,” and we spend most of this week’s episode praising her performance. We also Mary out on the overarching metaphor of addiction, the cautionary tale of Annie the Toxic Fan, Frances Sternhagen’s welcomed presence and fashioned sense as Deputy Virginia, what the movie would be like if Paul were a woman and played by Viola Davis, and some hot takes on Kathy Bates’s filmography. Plus: Warren Beatty’s contribution, Stephen King’s books, the importance of Judy Parfitt in “Delores Claiborne,” and of course that sweet little goose, Misery the pig. Episode 297: *Patreon Preview* Drag Race UK Season 3 Ep 1 – The Return of Royalty Sep 26, 2021

Show notes

Why aye pet, it’s already another season of UK huns! In this week’s special Patreon preview episode we give our first impressions and second guesses of the Season 3 queens, our takes on the first two runways of the season, and some strong feelings on those lip syncs. We have lots to say about the teen queens in the room, Anubis and Krystal, we’ll never say Kitty Scott-Claus correctly, Choriza may be an early favorite of ours, we appreciate the Home Alone fantasy that Ronnie Green and Scarlett are giving us out of drag, and we might start an advice column called Listen Linda. The rest of the season recaps will be available exclusively on Patreon! Episode 296: Dragula Season 4 – Meet the Monsters Sep 19, 2021

Show notes

Spooky season kicks off early this year with the announcement of a new season of Dragula! While the competition doesn’t officially start for another month, this week we’re discussing our first impression of this new crop of monsters, including an old familiar face from Drag Race here to potentially do backrolls over the competition. We also establish nicknames pretty early on for all of them, go on a brief tangent about Ripley and Jones in “Alien” and reminisce about some of the highlights of Seasons 2 and 3. We can’t help but wonder who will have spiders all over their tits this season…. Episode 295: Drag Race UK Season 3 – Meet the Queens Sep 12, 2021

Show notes

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the Gregg’s, the UK is giving us another season of drag royalty competing for potential superstardom once the show airs. This week we’re breaking down our first impressions of all 12 queens (well, 11 plus familiar face Ronnie Green), based largely on their Meet the Queens videos and very subjective evaluations. As per usual, we plan to be wrong (sometimes we even confuse past Dragula contestants for cancelled YouTube makeup artists) and look forward to falling in love with each of them in a couple weeks’ time. Episode 294: RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 6: Episode 12 – This is Our Country Sep 05, 2021

Show notes

The final four are putting the C.U.N.T in “country” this week for a classic All Stars finale. There’s not much left to discuss or do except to learn more choreography from Jamal Sims, have a 30 minute consultation on stage with Ru in Michelle, and write and record verses for a new Ru song. (Can you guess what it’s called?) While it was anyone’s race by the end, Kylie Sonique Love Hewitt Michelle Gellar Lange brought the most twang to her track, a subversive look on the runway and an ascended mastery of self in (Gu)Ru’s eyes, nabbing both an herstorical win for the series and all that “money honey.” Patreon: www.patreon.com/alrightmary Email: alrightmarypodcast@gmail.com Twitter: @alrightmary Johnny: @johnnyalso (Instagram) Colin: @colindrucker (Twitter) Web: www.tasteofreality.com/alright-mary/ www.alrightmary.com BetterHelp Promo: betterhelp.com/AlrightMary (discount code: AlrightMary)
