The Blair Witch Project (1999) | The Cutting Room Jun 24, 2022
    Show notes

Plenty of people left cinemas in 1999 genuinely believing they'd just watched three real students die. A fake documentary, a clever website and an IMDb page listing the actors as missing, presumed dead, had done the job.

The Blair Witch Project cost around sixty thousand dollars and took nearly a quarter of a billion, more or less inventing modern found-footage horror in the process. The cast were barely fed, barely briefed and genuinely terrified, and it shows. Luke, Westy and Matt unpick the filmmaking, the marketing masterclass and the scares, then score it out of 10. Nobody mention the corner.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) | The Cutting Room Jun 23, 2022
    Show notes

No film in history arrived under heavier expectation. Sixteen years after Return of the Jedi, people queued round the block and bought tickets just to watch the trailer. Then the lights went down, and... well. You know.

George Lucas brought Star Wars back with Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman, a wall of fresh CGI, a pod race, the finest lightsaber duel in the whole saga, and one Gungan who started a thousand arguments. John, Westy and Matt take on the prequel everyone has a take on, weigh the good against the Jar Jar, and deliver three scores out of 10. Phantom menace, or phantom classic?

    Boogie Nights (1997) | Ep. 17 - Part 2 May 13, 2022
    Show notes

The film pivots from disco euphoria to eighties dread, and that nightmarish drug-deal scene is where it all curdles. Luke, Westy, and Matt continue the story.

We dig into the crew behind the film — PTA's screenplay, the wall-to-wall needle-drop soundtrack, and the roving camerawork that became his signature — before breaking down the finale, the reception, and its lasting legacy. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

If you've not heard Part 1 — Anderson, the cast, and the middle — go back and start there.Part 1 has everything before this — Carlito, De Palma, the cast and the middle. Start there if you've not.

    Boogie Nights (1997) | Ep. 17 - Part 1 May 13, 2022
    Show notes

Paul Thomas Anderson was twenty-six, on his second film, and somehow directing a cast of this size like a veteran. Luke, Westy, and Matt begin the story of his breakout.

In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, director Paul Thomas Anderson, the cast, and the second act — including Mark Wahlberg's career-redefining turn, the huge ensemble, and the long tracking shots that announced a major talent.

The party's not over. Part 2, covering the crew, the finale, reception, and the film's legacy, is available now.

    The Empire Strikes Back (1980) | Ep. 16 - Part 2 Apr 15, 2022
    Show notes

Lucas funded the film almost entirely himself to keep control, gambling everything on the sequel. It paid off spectacularly. John, Westy, and Matt continue the story, up to that line in Cloud City.

We dig into the crew behind the film — the screenplay with Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, John Williams's score and the Imperial March, and the advances in creature and effects work — before breaking down the finale, the reception, and why it's so often called the greatest sequel ever made. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

Part 1 is the war on the ice and the road to Dagobah — Kershner, the cast, the first half. Start there.

    The Empire Strikes Back (1980) | Ep. 16 - Part 1 Apr 15, 2022
    Show notes

The sequel nobody knew how to make better turned out to be the best of them all. John, Westy, and Matt begin the story of the darker, stranger second chapter.

In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, director Irvin Kershner, the cast, and the second act — including the battle on Hoth, Luke's training with Yoda on Dagobah, and the famously troubled, over-budget production.

There's a revelation coming that you already know, and it still lands. Part 2 delivers it: crew, finale, reception, legacy. Out now.

    X (2022) | The Cutting Room Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

Look closely at the young starlet and the withered old woman hunting her, and it's the same performer under both. Mia Goth plays predator and prey in X (2022), and you'd be hard pushed to spot the join.

Ti West drops a 1970s adult-film crew at a remote Texas farmhouse, then lets it all curdle, and he secretly shot an entire prequel back to back with it on the same set. John, Westy and Matt size up West's direction, the Texas Chain Saw homage, the performances and the kills, then score it out of 10.

    Fargo (1996) | Ep. 15 - Part 2 Mar 18, 2022
    Show notes

Frances McDormand doesn't appear until well into the film and still walked away with the Oscar. Luke, Westy, and Matt continue the story, picking up as Marge closes in.

We dig into the crew behind the film — the Coens' Oscar-winning screenplay, Carter Burwell's score, and Roger Deakins's stark cinematography — before breaking down the finale, the awards haul, and the film's lasting legacy, TV spin-off and all. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

Part 1 is the set-up — the Coens, the cast, Jerry digging his hole. Start there.

    Fargo (1996) | Ep. 15 - Part 1 Mar 18, 2022
    Show notes

Oh ya, you betcha. Luke, Westy, and Matt begin the story of the Coen brothers' snowbound crime classic and the cheerfully pregnant police chief at the heart of it.

In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, directors Joel and Ethan Coen, the cast, and the second act — including the famously cheeky ""true story"" card, William H. Macy's flailing Jerry Lundegaard, and the bleak white Minnesota expanse.

There's a wood chipper in the third act, and we're not there yet. Part 2, covering the crew, the finale, reception, and the film's legacy, is available now.

The Batman (2022) | The Cutting Room Mar 06, 2022
    Show notes

When Robert Pattinson was announced as Batman, a corner of the internet lost the plot. Then the film landed, and the brooding, eyeliner-smudged detective at its centre quietly won most of them over.

The Batman (2022) is Matt Reeves's three-hour noir, less caped blockbuster than rain-soaked crime thriller, with Paul Dano's Zodiac-inspired Riddler, a Nirvana needle-drop, and Colin Farrell buried so deep in prosthetics as the Penguin you'd never place him. John, Westy and Matt talk through the direction, the writing, the detective spin on the character and the rest, then deliver three scores out of 10. Vengeance, scored out of ten.
