Th Usual Suspects (1996) | The Cutting Room Aug 16, 2024
    Show notes

Who is Keyser Söze? Audiences spent 1995 arguing about it, and one famous closing shot has been keeping people guessing ever since. We won't spoil it here.

The film is Bryan Singer's twisting neo-noir The Usual Suspects (1995), built on Christopher McQuarrie's Oscar-winning screenplay and a loaded ensemble: Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro, Chazz Palminteri, Pete Postlethwaite and an Oscar-winning Kevin Spacey. The lineup scene the cast couldn't get through without laughing, the direction, the writing and that ending all get unpacked, before Luke, Westy and Matt deliver three scores out of 10. Does cinema's greatest magic trick still fool you?

    The Wrestler (2008) | Ep. 43 - Part 2 Jul 19, 2024
    Show notes

Aronofsky shot it on a tiny budget with handheld cameras to give it a fly-on-the-wall rawness, a world away from his more stylised work. Luke, Westy, and Matt continue the story, building to that unforgettable final image.

We dig into the crew behind the film — the screenplay, Clint Mansell's score and the Springsteen title track, and the gritty cinematography — before breaking down the finale, the awards attention, and the film's legacy. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

For Randy's life outside the ring — Aronofsky, the cast, the first half — Part 1 is the place.

Luke, Westy, and Matt begin the story of Darren Aronofsky's raw, aching character study. In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, director Darren Aronofsky, the cast, and the second act — including Rourke's battered Randy "The Ram", the stripped-back documentary feel, and the toll the ring takes on a body well past its prime. The comeback match and everything riding on it are still ahead. The Winklevoss twins were played by one actor and a body double, seamlessly stitched together by effects so good you'd never notice. John, Westy, and Matt continue the story as the partnerships fracture.

We dig into the crew behind the film — Sorkin's Oscar-winning screenplay, the Reznor and Ross score that also won, and Fincher's precise cinematography — before breaking down the finale, the awards haul, and the film's standing as a defining portrait of its era. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

A film about people sitting at computers shouldn't be this gripping. David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin made sure it was. John, Westy, and Matt begin the story.

In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, director David Fincher, the cast, and the second act — including Jesse Eisenberg's Mark Zuckerberg, Sorkin's machine-gun dialogue, and the dorm-room origins of a company that ate the world.

The lawsuits and betrayals are still piling up. Part 2 settles the account: crew, finale, reception, legacy. Out now.

The film was such a sleeper hit that word of mouth kept it at number one for weeks, almost unheard of for a horror drama. Luke, Westy, and Matt continue the story, up to the ending that rewires the whole film.

We dig into the crew behind the film — Shyamalan's screenplay, James Newton Howard's score, and the cinematography that hides its secrets in plain sight — before breaking down the twist, the enormous reception, and the legacy. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

Part 1 is everything before the penny drops — Shyamalan, the cast, the first half. Worth going back for.

It has one of the most famous twist endings in cinema, and we're going to be very careful here. Luke, Westy, and Matt begin the story of M. Night Shyamalan's breakthrough.

In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, director M. Night Shyamalan, the cast, and the second act — including young Haley Joel Osment's remarkable performance, Bruce Willis's grieving child psychologist, and the quiet, creeping dread.

Verhoeven, who grew up under Nazi occupation, made a film about fascism so straight-faced that critics at the time accused it of the very thing it was mocking. John, Westy, and Matt continue the story as the war turns desperate.

We dig into the crew behind the film — the screenplay loosely drawn from Heinlein, Basil Poledouris's score, and the Oscar-nominated creature effects — before breaking down the finale, the misunderstood reception, and the cult reappraisal that followed. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

Part 1 sets up the recruits and the satire — Verhoeven, the cast, the first half. Start there if you've not.

Would you like to know more? John, Westy, and Matt begin the story of the bug-blasting blockbuster that a lot of people completely misread, and the satire hiding in plain sight.

In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, director Paul Verhoeven, the cast, and the second act — including the chiselled young cast, the deliberately fascistic propaganda interludes, and the war against the bugs ramping up.
