    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. MESSAGE DESCRIPTION "Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time." - Pink Floyd, excerpt from Time. Do you ever feel this way? We all have competing priorities and opportunities and it can be hard to know how to use the limited time we have. Rick Fortner and David B. Smith created a special version of the song, Time, by Pink Floyd to accompany my message about the one thing we all need more of, time. Special thanks to Ryan and Sarah Darby who won this sermon topic and anthem at last year's Love & Light Gala. To bid on a sermon topic, get your tickets today. Our annual fundraiser supporting All Souls and the Justice Council is Friday, October 13. 'LIVE AND LET DIE' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) Oct 08, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Could death be another form of life or of living? From the day we are born, the process of death or dying begins. The Apostle Paul in scripture wrote that he figuratively died daily. Does death in life make practical sense to us? And is the presumed "ultimate" or final death anything more than a transition to another form of living? We must live and we must die. We must live until we die. And some believe we all will live again. Is there life after life or life after death? And are they not basically the same speculations? This will be a fun study. Join me! 'COURAGE AND VULNERABILITY' - A sermon by Rev. Gerald L. Davis (Contemporary Service) Oct 01, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 1, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald L. Davis, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION There are times when we think in binary ways about complexities of life. If we fall into the trap of an either/or solution, we discount the vast creative impulses of this thing we call life. Some people say to be vulnerable is to be courageous, while others think being vulnerable is not showing courage. I want to apply another way of thinking about vulnerability in a context of truth-telling and justice-seeking. Join me in this foray. 'A RIVER RUNS THROUGH US' - Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service) Oct 01, 2017
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, October 1, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. MESSAGE DESCRIPTION This Sunday we consider the many ways water shapes our lives. Long-time member Jean Ann Fausser, who won this sermon in last year's Gala, will have an original piece of art entitled, A River Runs Through Me, featured in the sanctuary. Water is the source of life. It also destroys life. Water is a human right. It is also big business. Water is the symbol for God in our Simple Gifts, Too painting. Moses died before he could cross over the river Jordan into the promised land and Jesus was baptized in that same river. Greek mythology teaches us that we cross over the river Styx when we die. The Tao teaches that water does not resist, yet it conquers all. Our bodies are 60% water. Whether you love or fear water, together we will lift up the power of water to shape and remake our lives. 'FAITH AND PATIENCE' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Contemporary Service) Sep 24, 2017
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION When I grow impatient, beneath the surface, I am often angry with the current state of affairs – whether they are political or personal. But Jesus taught us that the Kingdom of Heaven on earth is here and now, within our own hearts, minds, and souls. If peace lies within, our impatience can be a problem, even an obstacle to living a faithful life. Join me this week as we explore the connections and contradictions between acceptance and apathy, resistance and righteousness, endurance and patience, as we discover for ourselves what it means to live faithfully in today's world. 'STORIES THAT IMPRISON US' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) Sep 24, 2017
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. MESSAGE DESCRIPTION We are all storytellers. We not only tell other people stories, we tell ourselves stories. Some of the stories we tell ourselves keep us captive. Giving credence to a story is a kind of faith. In that way, we all have faith in something. However, it's important to be careful what stories we believe. Some stories open our world and increase our capacity for kindness and love. Other stories limit our lives and keep us living in fear. As we continue on the monthly theme of faith, I want us to look at the stories we have faith in and make sure they are worthy of our trust. 'THE IMPOSSIBLE WILL TAKE A LITTLE WHILE' - Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service) Sep 17, 2017
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, September 17, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. SERMON DESCRIPTION What is the best synonym for faith? Some would say trust, or confidence. Others consider faith to be blind, naïve or simple, if not ignorant. My great grandfather, who was a rabbi in Lithuania and then in Connecticut, said patience was the most important virtue of all. Could patience be a synonym for faith? Perhaps, if you agree with Howard Zinn who said, "I am totally confident not that the world will get better, but that we should not give up the game before all the cards have been played."
