    'AWE-MAZING!' - A sermon by Mariela Perez-Simons (Contemporary Service) Oct 20, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Perez-Simons, Intern Minister. DESCRIPTION Experiences of awe make us stop. They leave us spellbound and "captivated," like being apprehended in the most delicious way. But what is awe? Awe is an emotional response, a feeling that arises from being in the presence of something larger than the self; something so much more expansive than our understanding; it's mind-shattering in a way… And having our minds blown like that has many benefits, for our spirit, for our health, and for our community; come learn more. It's going to be Awe-mazing!!! 'THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING AN EMOTIONAL PERSON' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service) Oct 20, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Preached by Rev. John Wolf at his church in Meadville, PA. "We need more anger. We need more hate today." The Rev Dr. John Wolf continued, "We need more emotion today …. anger, hate, sympathy, love, compassion, and religious fervor." What was Rev. Wolf referring to? And why would he say such things? Join me for the next Throwback Sunday and hear a good word about human emotions. Certainly, it is the excess of emotion in religions and politics that brought many of us to All Souls, but a lack of emotion just as easily leads to evil, as an excess. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) creeps its way into our lives, let's hear what Rev. Wolf had to say about being an emotional person and listen for its relevance in our lives today. 'WHAT'S GOOD (GOD) ABOUT EVIL, AND EVIL ABOUT GOOD (GOD)?' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) Oct 13, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION I am intrigued with the scriptural passage that forbids us humans to eat from the tree (truth) of the knowledge (science) of both good and evil. Evidently, both were somehow created by the "Sky God" of Hebrew scripture, and yet everything "God" created is said in scripture to have been good. If this is true, even allegorically, that would mean evil is nothing more or less than good extorted, contorted, and distorted. Join me on Sunday, I will share my thoughts on the "good" or God in "evil" and the evil in "good" or God! What if they're not so much enemies, but cooperative friends? 'ALL THERE IS' - A message by Yadenee Hailu (Humanist Service) Oct 13, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Duality is a terrifying loop to get stuck in, and yet when so much pain and tragedy is all around us it's hard not to see all the evil. What else is there if not frustration and cynicism? How do we not swing from despair to apathy or tunnel vision based bliss? Let us uncover and practice together sustainable ways of being where in our lifetime overcomes evil. *Music: Cynthia Simmons Taylor, vocal solo; Tommy Poole, saxophone; Nathan Eicher, bass; Chris Peters, drums; Rick Fortner, piano. 'SPIRITUAL TREASON: THE RISKS OF BEING A BORDER-WALKER' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service) Oct 13, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION There is a lot of talk of treason these days! It is a word that means betraying your country. By many it is considered one of the worst crimes someone can commit. What about spiritual treason? How does someone betray their spirit? What are the elements and consequences of spiritual treason? Is it a high crime or a misdemeanor? Perhaps the most important question is, "Are you being true to your own heart?" 'ECSTATIC WORSHIP' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) Oct 06, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Come experience and learn about ecstatic worship. I will be drawing on stories and photos from three years of travel on a mountain bicycle around Asia, the Middle-East and Europe in my early 20's as I explore the ecstatic in worship. Why are people drawn to transcendence and what are some of the diverse and colorful ways people find it? I'll share stories of Sufi mystics who dance into a trance and Hindu holy men, called Sadhus, who use drugs as a way to connect to the god Shiva. I will also draw parallels to Christian Pentecostalism and the Great Awakening of Christianity in the 18th and 19th centuries in America. 'NONMALEFICENCE' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service) Oct 06, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION As agnostics, atheists and humanists, it feels so good to let go of inherited or culturally imposed beliefs about a punishing God, and to embrace our inherent worth and dignity. The next step – which sometimes lasts a lifetime - is a struggle to accept our human responsibility for evil in the world. This Sunday we will explore the principle and practice of non-harm as a response to modern day evils. Primum non nocere, first do no harm, is central in the Hippocratic oath taken by physicians, in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, and in the yoga sutras. If you were to practice non-harm for a month, a week, or a day …. how would your choices change? 'OVERCOMING THE ENEMY IN ME' - A sermon by Yadenee Hailu (Traditional Service) Oct 06, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION Evil is in how systems and institutions build and repeat un-(w)holy roles for people. Evil that comes from within me, is when voices and expectations in myself perpetuate images and roles for myself which are (you guessed it) not whole. Let's make beautiful the art of healing- which is found in reclaiming worth, dignity, interconnection, and agency... again, again, and again. 'THE REFRESHING SALT OF BROKEN TEARS' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) Sep 29, 2019
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, September 29, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION While pondering the skills needed to fulfill a vision, I became curious about what makes a vision fulfilling—as in, truly satisfying and full. How do we know a vision is a whole and nourishing one? Also, when can we reap the benefits of our grand visions while remaining honest? It isn't sustainable (for me) if rewards are only at the end. I need sustenance for the here and now! We will reflect on what traditions and personal experience reveal are our accessible means to nourishment through our (w)holy visions and the power we have to heal and grow towards a fulfilling communal vision. 'DO YOU SEE WHAT I FEEL?' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) Sep 29, 2019
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 29, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION The late Helen Keller, who was born blind said: "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision." I call that sleep walking, which is basically eyes wide shut not wired shut! It is said that there are three kinds of people: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened! Vision isn't just sight, it is feeling and being. It is emotion, devotion and often commotion. Vision can be disturbing, interrupting and even disruptive. Be willing to be disturbed in order to work and walk out the vision. Team work makes the dream work! Join me on Sunday for a healthy discussion on feeling as well as seeing the vision!
