'SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST OR SURVIVAL OF THE FRIENDLIEST?' - A sermon by Mariela Pérez-Simons (Virtual Service) Apr 05, 2020
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister. The recording includes a pastoral-care message from Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION "Survival of the fittest" has always been a deeply misunderstood concept, but now, after decades of research by sociologists and evolutionary biologists, a new picture of human nature has emerged, showing how human beings—in order to survive as a species—had to learn to cooperate. While we can act in selfish ways, there's well-researched evidence that shows how we are actually wired for goodness and how altruism is part of our true nature. While our culture has an impact on our personality, there are deeper, ancient forces working through us, propelling us toward goodness, love, and collaboration. This Sunday, our ministerial intern, Mariela Pérez-Simons, makes a passionate case for cultivating altruistic love and compassion for our well-being and the well-being of others. 'THE ART OF INTIMACY: SELF, STORY, AND UNIVERSE' - A service by Kelli McLoud-Schingen, Mariela Pérez-Simons, and Rev. Barbara Prose (Virtual Service) Mar 22, 2020
    Show notes

The service was held on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Kelli McLoud-Schingen, Guest Speaker, Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister, and Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Our celebration of Women's History Month continues. "Enlightenment is intimacy with all things." —The Zen master Dogen (1200-1253), founder of the Sōtō school of Zen On this Sunday, as we delve into the concept of the Divine Feminine, we will be exploring how we can cultivate intimacy as a spiritual practice. Intimacy with our feelings, with the earth, with one another, with spirit, with the soul, with our heartbeat… and perhaps even with the virus itself. Because we already have the impulse to connect, intimacy allows us to move from division to wholeness… We are invited to get closer and closer until we realize that we are, in fact, not separate but a part of everything. 'RECLAIMING WISE WAYS' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service) Mar 08, 2020
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION There is a positive death movement happening. It involves talking openly about our bodies: how we age, get sick, and die. It includes practices like: death doulas, death dinners, death care guides and more. For so long, our culture has kept death hidden from us. Here at All Souls, we face death openly, as a way to honor our lives. We have a hospice choir and honor our dead in moving memorial services that celebrate life. I hope you'll join me, SpiritSong, our Life Decisions Team and Nicole Ogundare, our Life Events Coordinator, as we explore who has the authority to make decisions about our lives – and our deaths. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Authority is one of the most needed and yet intimidating words in the English language. Authority must first come from your human essence. You share and/or delegate portions of your authority in life, but never all of it. We learn to honor our authorship of our own lives and our authority to live based on our assignment in life. 'FREEDOM AND THE QUEST FOR WHOLENESS' - A sermon by Mariela Pérez-Simons (Contemporary Service) Mar 01, 2020
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 1, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister. DESCRIPTION "What a long time it can take to become the person one has always been," says the writer and teacher Parker Palmer. This sermon is inspired by Palmer's words. I want to explore the ways in which the human soul goes into "hiding" because of acculturation, oppression, or trauma. Psychologists have a term for it, disassociation, and some indigenous cultures call it "the loss of soul" while offering options for healing, such as "soul retrieval" journeys. Join me to look at the ways we can free our truest, most authentic selves and lead lives of presence and wholeness. As Zora Neale Hurston once said, "Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place." 'WHAT CAKE WOULD JESUS BAKE?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) Feb 23, 2020
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 23, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION There is a long history of using the Bible to further discrimination. During the years of legalized slavery, many Christians used biblical explanations to justify their "right" to own slaves. Today religious freedom is, again, being weaponized as a tool of discrimination and political gain by those who want to deny the rights of LGBT people, women, Muslims, immigrants and others. As All Souls stands firmly on the side of freedom of religion, what do we have to say to those who are using such language in ways that harm others? As we continue to celebrate black history and our theme of "choosing freedom" let's look to the past to see how we can live more freely and stand on the side of liberty in our own times. 'FREEDOM FIGHTS' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) Feb 16, 2020
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION "Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them." These words from Fredrick Douglass seem quite fitting for the current state of the American republic. We are a county that was founded on the principle of freedom and yet freedom, and its synonym liberty, have often been a source of conflict and confusion throughout the American experiment in democracy. Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is celebrated on Monday, once wrote: "We all declare for liberty, but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing." Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass were both fighting for the freedom of people to be able to benefit from their own labor. Their opponents were fighting for the freedom to benefit from someone else's labor. Despite their diametrically opposing definitions and goals, each side claimed to be fighting for freedom. As a community of free-thinkers we can learn a lot from this history about the nature of our own freedom today. Join me as we continue to explore this month's theme of Choosing Freedom and celebrate Black History Month in a way that uplifts and enlightens us all. 'CITY OF LIGHT' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service) Feb 16, 2020
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION In an election year, 32 years ago, John Wolf preached this sermon and said, "If the people of this country do not feel manipulated, if their basic instincts for fair play and for justice are not confounded, then something ominous has to have happened. Human nature being what it is, as Emerson says, we have a natural affinity for truth. But we smother those natural instincts when we are so offended by what we hear being said that we despair that anything we do makes any difference, that the truth doesn't matter, that the powers that be are in control and the ends justify the means. And when no one rises up to challenge the offenses, apathy can turn to bitterness. And bitterness easily turns to hate." Sound familiar? Join me this President's Day weekend, to hear how John found his way, from there, or here—back to faith, hope and love—back to freedom, reason and tolerance. We have lived through perilous times before. No one said it better than the poet Langston Hughes, who John quotes in this sermon. "We the people must redeem America. We the people must redeem the land, the mines, the plants, the rivers. The mountains and the endless plain. All, all the stretch of these great states. And the faith, the great faith we have lost—and make America America again!"
