    Let's Go Crazy Nov 24, 2021
    Show notes

"The revolutionary Jesus I know dances on tables with her heels in her hand and stumbles back home as the sun creeps over the horizon. The revolutionary Jesus I know dances furiously, seductively, with abandon, with joy. The revolutionary Jesus I know knows the feelings that come with dancing and that come from watching each other dance can be scary because they are so powerful … and that is precisely why they are holy.

When was the last time you danced? Has it been hours? Days? Months? Years? Has it been too long? Are you ready to dance again?"

Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Psalm 89:1-8, 14 and John 2:1-11. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon.

What We Need Is Here Nov 12, 2021
    Show notes

"Wendell Berry was right. We are those wild geese. Generation upon generation upon generation endlessly flying beyond the sight of any one person or point in time. Abandon, as in love or sleep, holds us to our way – clear in the ancient faith. And what is that ancient faith? That what we need is here. That God our creator is also God our provider. That God's Holy Spirit is not just a theological concept but the power, the living love that binds us together and lifts us up. That those who die are not lost. They have just peeled off and are flying out of sight of we who are looking forward. There the beat of their wings is still lifting us, and we are lifting them. That love not only heals … love connects … love lifts … love propels us forward together."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 11:30 a.m. on All Saints Sunday, November 7, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Isaiah 25:1, 4a, 6–10a, exerpt from What We Need Is Here by Wendell Berry, and Matthew 27:50–56. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon here.

Let Me Kiss It and Make It Better Nov 05, 2021
    Show notes

"Are you thirsty? Are you hungry? Are you hurting? Are you tired? Oh my God, thank you for asking. I still might be afraid to give you my real answer. But at least you are opening the door. At least you are giving me the opportunity. At least you are giving truth a chance, to take her first breath, to make her first cry. And Jesus knows the answer before we can open our mouths. It's why he asks the question. Jesus is setting a table in the wilderness and saying, 'if anyone thirsts, come to me and drink.' And even before we can give our yes, Jesus also knows how afraid we can be to give us. And so even before we can give our yes, Jesus doesn't call us weak, he doesn't tell us to get over it and … he doesn't make it all go away. Jesus asks the question and then says 'Come here. Don't be afraid. Come here. Your vulnerability is your strength. Come here … let me kiss it and make it better.'"

The Space Behind My Mother's Chair Oct 20, 2021
    Show notes

"My entire life, I have been searching for that space behind my mother's chair … and I wonder if you have been, too. That safe place I can squeeze into not with someone who is perfect, but with others who struggle as I do, as we all do, with balancing the hope that we are loved and safe with the reality of all the times we have not been. In whispers being able to have the conversations we do not yet have the courage or perhaps even the vocabulary to have in the rest of the world. Trusting that if we cross boundaries, a gentle growl will let us know … but even then, we know we need not fear because grace, trust and love are strong enough."

She Was Taking a Bath Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

"I wonder … what would Bathsheba's telling of the story look like? I can scarcely imagine … and yet I know there are those among us here who can imagine only too well. Who have your own stories of violation and imprisonment, abuse and rape. Of being told you are responsible for men's actions because of how you look or act or dress. Of being judged if your body is unappealing to a man and being told you were assaulted because it was too appealing. Of having even that most sacred of moments, you alone in the bath, violated because there is nowhere you can escape the memory, the fear, the voices that lie and say maybe the people who are telling you it was your fault … are right."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 9:00 and 11:30 a.m. on Celebration of Ministries Sunday, September 26, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: II Samuel 11:2–15 and Matthew 5:21–26. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon here.

    Reimagine Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

"We did not go through everything we have been through these past 18 months – that we are still going through -- to have this world be the same … to have us be the same … as we were before this all started.

    As if it ever could!

    As if we ever could!

We have been challenged and we have been changed … and we are still being challenged and we are still being changed … and there is a gift amidst the pain and it is the gift of the opportunity

    … to reimagine."
