What Is the Price We're Willing to Pay for the Future We Want to See? Feb 03, 2023
    Show notes

"But the greatest injustice is about who disproportionately goes to the grave, and when, and why, and how, and who gets to live while others are left to die? So yes! Jesus gets extreme and says "If I have to stop a funeral, then we'll just stop the funeral, because there's a future that needs creating, and it's not subject to negotiation. Beloved, there is a future that needs creating..."

We Are Called to Welcome the Foreigner Jan 25, 2023
    Show notes

"On this celebration of the Lunar New Year, let us recall our own identity as fishers for people, especially those among us who are Asian or Asian-American. We here are all immigrants or descendants in some way. We here, and our ancestors, came from nations very far away. We come here, to this table, in our rich diversity, to celebrate Jesus, who called each one of us by name, to follow him and to be like him. Because we were all once foreigners or descendants of foreigners, we are called to welcome the foreigner."

Sermon by Gale A. Yee from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Lunar New Year Sunday, January 22, 2023 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Tobit 13:11-17, Psalm 22:23-31, I Timothy 3:14-16 and Matthew 4:18-25. Watch the sermon on YouTube.

The Healing Power of Belovedness Jan 13, 2023
    Show notes

"When we are secure in our belovedness, we don't need to hide our wounds because we know that there is no wound that love cannot eventually heal. When we are secure in our belovedness, we don't need to broadcast our wounds so people will see us because we already know that we are seen and that we are loved. When we are secure in our belovedness, we can share our wounds without needing to center our wounds."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Healing Sunday, January 8, 2023 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Isaiah 2:1-5, Psalm 57 and Matthew 3:1-17. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon.

And the Word Became Flesh: Christmas Words of Wisdom from Three Wise Women Jan 04, 2023
    Show notes

"God is for us and was made present among us in the Word made flesh in order to convince us that we are safe because we are loved by God. And it is out of that safety – out of the sure and certain knowledge that absolutely nothing can separate us from that love – that we can risk – we can dare -- we can be the change we want to see in the world."

Sermon by Susan Russell from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Christmas Morning, December 25, 2022 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Wisdom 9:1-6, 9-11, Colossians 1:15-20 and John 1:1-14. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon.

    Travel Warnings Jan 04, 2023
    Show notes

"The Christ looks at a travel warning and says "Hell, no!" These are my people. And nobody is going to tell me that I can't go be with my people, where they are, as they are. That's what tonight is about. And that's why when that baby Jesus (smack hands) hit the atmosphere, you can bet he cried, because… Damn.

Human life is hard. Human life is messy. And Jesus was not and is not immune to the hardness and the messiness. The hardness and the messiness is where Jesus eats his lunch.

That's what tonight is about. About a God who doesn't give a DAMN about travel warnings. And that's important. That's important because every one of us … every one of our lives … when we dig deep and get down to it … has a travel warning."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 8:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Isaiah 9:2-7, Q'uran: Surah 3:45-48, and Luke 2:1-14. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon.

God Loves Vulnerability Jan 04, 2023
    Show notes

"Nothing in our lives is more consequential than the notion of God we hold. To me, this is where the story of Jesus' birth just blows my mind. The good news of this night—and my friends it is great news—is that God loves things by being in all things. God loved us by becoming one of us. God's answer to violence and domination was to become a tiny baby—born of a woman. Baby at the breast, totally dependent on the love around him for survival.

    God loves vulnerability."

Sermon by Sally Howard from worship at 5:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Isaiah 9:2-7, Psalm 68:4-11 and Luke 2:1-14. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon.

The Christmas Story Jan 04, 2023
    Show notes

"Well, sure. Now that we know what a big deal Jesus is, we're like, 'Come to my house Mary and Joseph! We have an empty bedroom with good Wi-Fi – you can have your baby at my house!' But that night? Nobody wanted them."

"To grow benevolence -- to live our lives in alignment with God's values of love, justice and compassion -- is to stand in opposition to the rulers of the world of gloom -- to be a light to the nations -- to strive to make peace on earth, goodwill to all not just a hymn we sing once a year but a reality we live all year long."
