I Want to Break Free Mar 27, 2024

Show notes

"It's OK to break free … as long as you don't break too free. It's OK to break free … as long as you don't make people with power and money too uncomfortable. It's OK to break free … as long as you stay respectable, don't rock that boat too much, don't challenge the purity cultures that divide and the etiquettes that bind. It's OK to break free … but keep it down, would you? That's the challenge. We want to break free … and we don't want to be crucified. And yet what we have just witnessed is that one so often leads to the other." Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 10 a.m. on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Matthew 21:1-11, Isaiah 49:5-16, Gospel of the Passion as written in Mark. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon here.

Doing Small Things with Great Love Mar 12, 2024

Show notes

"As a hospital chaplain, I have been asked to pray for the sick and those on the verge of death, but I have never witnessed a miracle like the ones recounted in the Gospel of Mark. But I have seen how the ripples of the small acts that we do with great love are miraculously multiplied by God's Spirit and ripple outward from us in ever-expanding circles, spreading the inexhaustible light of God's love to our neighbors both far and wide. The Dutch priest Henri Nouwen, a spiritual thinker and writer who wrote endlessly about the life of Jesus and the love of God observed that "the world likes things to be large, big, impressive, and elaborate. [But] God chooses the small things which are overlooked in the big world." Sermon by Jonathan Stoner from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: I Corinthians 3:1-9, Psalm 145:14-19 and Mark 8:1-21. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Read the text of the sermon here.

The Beautiful, Outrageous, Uncloseted, Queer Love of Christ Feb 27, 2024

Show notes

"You do not need to be afraid of yourself. You are free to question and explore. You deserve a healthy relationship with your body and you are worthy of the time, space and resources it takes to create that relationship. Pleasure is not a sin. Delight and pleasure are a beautiful part of being alive…. Our bodies are for honoring, not policing. We are queer followers of a queer Christ. And thank God for that." Dear Friend Jan 31, 2024

Show notes

"I truly believe … God dreams for us to be a community that is unflinching in our quest for justice. A community that refuses to remain silent in the midst of horrendous evil, knowing that "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil… Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act." A community that is as determined as ever not "to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice," but "to drive a spoke into the wheel itself." A community that is as determined as ever to speak the truth to the powers that are oppressing and killing the people of God here and around the world in the same way that Gandhi spoke that truth to Hitler. And … a community that always begins those entreaties with the words "Dear friend."" Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Psalm 34:1-14, and Mark 3:13-35. Watch the sermon on YouTube. Meeting in That Place of Pain Jan 27, 2024

Show notes

"We are in an extended period of difficult change and deep loss. And it impacts all of us. So let me be the first to say it this morning. I am hurting. It has been a hard seven and a half years here and the past four especially so. I am hurting and I know you are too, I just know it. So instead of trying to pretend we aren't in pain, can we meet in that place of pain?" Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Healing Sunday, January 21, 2024 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: II Kings 5:1-4, 9-14, Psalm 103:1-6, 11, and Mark 3:1-12.
