This touching, wise and unwittingly funny episode of Hot Mess, is all about losing a loved one during the Covid19 pandemic and the stages of grief. Alec and Ross commiserate over their mothers’ deaths while Matthew adds his wisdom to the conversation. They share how they’ve coped with the horrible reality that death is final and harsh, but also agree that at point accepting it and finding some value in the loss is critical to your mental wellness.
The comic misses his mother deeply. She taught her son to value himself and go after whatever he wanted. When Ross expressed interest in show business, she supported him wholeheartedly. His deep bond with her now plays out sweetly on his Instagram cooking posts, where he practices the lessons learned long ago in her kitchen.
Ross also reveals the challenges he faced when as the Intern on “The Tonight Show.” He recalls how Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc, then at the height of NBC’s “Friends,” were cruel to him on camera and how it eventually came full circle, explaining that ten years later, Matt found Ross and apologized for his diva behavior. He ends the anecdote by saying, “I’m still waiting to hear from Matthew Perry.”
If you’re going through any kind of grief, you will find comfort in listening to this poignant podcast, as you can learn the process of healing, through acceptance and hope, and how it can actually add something to your life.
