Combining CT Radiomics and Clinical Factors to Diagnose Invasive Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the Lung Jan 06, 2023
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/10.2214/AJR.22.28139

Wenhui Zhou, MD, PhD reviews a recent AJR article which developed and validated a nomogram combining clinical and CT-based radiomics features to differentiate pneumonia-type IMA and pneumonia. This nomogram outperformed radiologist interpretation or clinical factors alone, representing a useful tool in this difficult-to-diagnose disease.

Utility of AI Determined Body Composition Areas in Predicting Cardiovascular Events Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.22.27977

Leo Jia, MD discusses an article that finds new, fully automated artificial intelligent pipelines demonstrate the ability to determine body composition and predict subsequent cardiovascular events.

How Central is the Central Vein Sign? The Role of MRI Biomarkers and Contrast Material in Diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.22.27731

Multiple sclerosis is a multifaceted diagnosis. Does the classic imaging finding, the central vein sign, make an impact on the diagnosis? And does contrast media improve detecting the central vein sign? Yes and yes, according to a study discussed by Juliet Alla, MD.

Evaluation of the Utilization of Chest and Abdominopelvic CT for Traumatic Injury in the US Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.22.27991

Jesi Kim, MD discusses an important article that demonstrates a national increase in utilization of CT scans for trauma-related ED encounters from 2011 to 2018 with a potential relatively greater increased utilization of CT scans in minor traumas.

Incidental PE Detection by AI on Contrast-Enhanced Chest CT: Help or Hindrance? Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/full/10.2214/AJR.22.27895

AI algorithm application to contrast-enhanced chest CT, in comparison with clinical reports, resulted in high negative predictive value and moderate positive predictive value with high number of false positives in incidental pulmonary embolism detection, which raises the question: help or hindrance? Rachana Borkar MBBS, DMRD, DNB discusses potential benefits include second reads, worklist triage in high volume settings, and expedited treatment of incidentally detected pulmonary embolisms.

Pulmonary AVM Embolization: Are Micro Vascular Plugs the MVP? Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.21.27218

In this episode, John Do, MD speaks with PAVM expert Michael Taddonio, MD, interventional radiologist and director of the HHT program at the University of California San Diego, to discuss the results of a recently published study in AJR that supports the use of Micro Vascular Plugs as the preferred agent for pulmonary arteriovenous malformations embolotherapy over embolic coils and Amplatzer Plugs.

Constructing an Algorithm for Management of Multiple Architecture Distortions Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/full/10.2214/AJR.22.27625

This podcast with Stephany Mazur, MD and Rebekah Anders, MD covers new literature on multiple architectural distortions (ADs) and the rates of benign, high risk, and malignant pathology on stereotactic biopsy of ADs. Given the higher rate of high-risk lesions in the setting of multiple ADs, biopsy of each site may be warranted.

Discussion of a Novel Renal CT Algorithm for Diagnosis of Clear-Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.22.27971

Aruj Chawla, DO discusses how a CT-based algorithmic approach provides hope that centers with scarce MRI table time availability can provide an alternative characterization with comparable predictive value.

MR Elastography of the brain in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Sep 16, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.22.27904

Eymen Ucisik, MD discusses a recently published AJR article aiming to explore the potential uses of MR Elastography in the diagnosis and monitoring of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. It is relevant for the radiology audience since MR elastography may potentially provide a noninvasive alternative to lumbar puncture in the evaluation of the intracranial pressure, although further studies are needed to support this proposal.

Does CT washout have limited utility in incidental adrenal nodules in those without cancer? Sep 16, 2022
    Show notes

    Full article: https://www.ajronline.org/doi/abs/10.2214/AJR.22.27901

Adrenal adenomas are common due in part to increased utilization of cross-sectional imaging, there is a growing need to evaluate the utility of CT washout for small homogenous adrenal nodules (10 and without history of cancer given the prevalence of malignancy in true incidentalomas is low. Mohanned Alnammi, MD discusses an article that found evaluating true incidentalomas with HU >10 with CT washout and showed suboptimal diagnostic performance and that the 60% washout threshold may be of limited utility in those without a history of cancer.
