    Adventures of Horatio Hornblower

The Adventures of Horatio Hornblower (1952-1953)

    • Starring: Michael Redgrave as Horatio Hornblower.
    • Production: Produced by Harry Towers through his Towers of London syndicate in England.
    • Broadcast: This 30-minute historical action and adventure series first aired in 1952 on Radio Luxembourg. Despite being produced in England, the BBC wasn’t interested, so it was sent to the United States.
    • US Broadcasts: CBS originally broadcast 52 episodes until July 17, 1953. It was later rebroadcast by ABC in 1954 and the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1957.
    • Content: The series followed Hornblower’s career from a young, seasick midshipman to an Admiral of the Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars. The plots were carefully crafted by Forester to avoid direct interference with actual historical battles, allowing Hornblower to be on his own significant missions.

Besides wondering whether he could man his ship in time to return to sea Hornblower had other worries because his wife Maria was with him in his lodgings. She was tearful and told him that he might become a parent again. He felt guilty as he was just getting over the shock of the news that Lady Barbara Wellsley over whom he had nearly made a fool of himself aboard the Lydia, had just married Admiral Leyton a man under whom Hornblower was now serving.

Lady Barbara was having a humanising affect on Hornblower and the elaborate pose he had with difficulty built up before his officers and men of being a hard, silent, unemotional machine was jeopardized by those long tropical evenings at the rail under the white moon and the soft pacific breeze.

In all Hornblower’s years at sea both before and since that memorable time he does not remember being so utterly weary as he was after the Natividad plunged burning under the surface of the deep Pacific. But his own ship, Lydia was not without damage herself and thirty-eight of his men had been killed.

Many years have passed since that terrible day when the probability of death and defeat stared Horatio Hornblower in the face but he can close his eyes now and still feel that exhaustion and faintness that he dared not let any man see. It was a nightmare pause in a nightmare battle two partially disabled ships drifting rapidly apart and each with no purpose than to patch its wounds and return to destroy the other…

Hornblower had faced many problems in his seafaring career but as he looks back now he can remember none graver than that which faced him as he prepared to sail in his frigate in search of the Natividad. He had captured her before in harbor by night and by surprise and now he must beat her on the open sea.

Even after so many years Horatio Hornblower still feels a sense of shame of his temporary dependence on the mad Don Julian who believed himself a divine being and above the laws of man. While he waited he considered his best course of action. There was a chance that the Spanish ship might come in from sea in which case with half his crew ashore Hornblower would be in a hopeless case. On the other hand he had lookouts aloft and he was frantic to secure stores less Don Julian’s rebellion should come to a sudden and bloody ending…
