    Atlanta’s Musical Landmarks Apr 01, 2021

This week, we’ll take a look at ways to explore Atlanta’s musical history.

They’re a little different than the Fountain of Rings at Centennial Olympic Park or the Big Chicken in Marietta, but musical landmarks around the city — and state —maintain their own charm. The continued growth of the music industry in the city and region, coupled with its peerless history, means plenty of opportunities to swing by iconic spots, both new and old.

On this week’s podcast, the AJC’s music writer Melissa Ruggieri will talk about some of the places that celebrate Atlanta’s musical legacy.

2021 Spring Break Ideas for Georgians Mar 25, 2021

This year will mark a second spring break during the pandemic, so things are still far from normal. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy that time off.

Freelance writer Nina Reeder talked with a few Georgians to find out how they’re spending their break, whether at home or away. She’ll tell us what she learned on this week’s podcast.

Touching base with John Driskell Hopkins Mar 18, 2021

This week, we revisit the subject of our very first podcast.

Back in 2018, we launched the accessAtlanta podcast with an interview with the Zac Brown Band’s John Driskell Hopkins. The AJC’s Melissa Ruggieri spoke with him about his work, which included an upcoming solo album. And now, 160-something episodes later, we hear from Hopkins again as that album is finally available to the public.

Georgia hopefuls at 2021 Grammys Mar 11, 2021

This week we’re talking about the Grammy Awards.

The Grammys will look very different this year. Like most other awards shows, the ceremony will be virtual. It’s also coming a bit later than usual, having been moved from its original late January date.

Join us as Melissa Ruggieri and Shane Harrison discuss the nominees, the scheduled performances and the Georgia hopefuls.

Interview: William Bell, an architect of Memphis soul Mar 04, 2021

This week we’ll hear from one of the architects of Memphis soul.

While many of the Stax Records originators are gone, William Bell is still here. And the soulful, horn-driven Stax music and the Memphis sound are still here, too. Now Bell, 81 and an Atlanta resident, is being honored as a creator of the soul that put Memphis in the pantheon of American music. Bell is one of nine artists and craftspeople who have been named as National Heritage Fellows, recipients of the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts.

The AJC’s Bo Emerson recently spoke with the R&B legend and, on this week’s podcast, we’ll bring you that conversation.

Keris Salmon’s new exhibition 'To Have and To Hold' Feb 25, 2021

Like all forms of art and culture, the visual arts have had to find new ways to do things. This week, we’ll hear from one artist who has a new show that is going the virtual route.

Photographer Keris Salmon’s new exhibition “To Have and To Hold” is part of her series exploring the legacy of slavery through landscapes, architecture and text. This exhibit focuses on the homes of U.S. presidents who held enslaved people. The AJC’s Rosalind Bentley spoke with Salmon about her work and she’s brought us that conversation for this week’s podcast.

This week, we’ll hear from a decluttering expert and TV host who now lives in Georgia. Matt Paxton, formerly of the A&E show “Hoarders,” now hosts a show on PBS called “Legacy List With Matt Paxton.” The Suwanee resident rummages through collectibles and heirlooms found in attics, cellars and closets, helping baby boomers pare down their stuff as they downsize and focus on what is truly valuable to them.

On this week’s podcast, Paxton talks about his own personal experience with downsizing to move in with his fiancée in Georgia and tells Rodney Ho what led him to his line of work.

Safe, outdoor winter activities in Atlanta Feb 04, 2021

This week, we offer up a few ideas for wintertime fun.

Winter is often the time when we cherish quiet weekends inside, cuddled up in our favorite blankets, binge-watching movies and comforted with take-out and wine. But, if you’re looking for ways to get out of the house in these colder months, freelance writer Nina Hemphill Reeder will bring us a few fun and fulfilling things to accent your winter on this week’s podcast.

Atlanta's monument of the late Henry ‘Hank’ Aaron Jan 28, 2021

This week, we hear from the artist who created one of the city’s finest monuments to the late Henry ‘Hank’ Aaron.

Jan. 22 was a sad day for sports fans, for Atlanta and for the world. One of baseball’s all-time greats, Henry “Hank” Aaron, died at age 86. The homer hero has been honored in many ways, for his work both on the field and off, and one of those honors involves a statue that now resides at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves.

Last week, the AJC’s Bo Emerson spoke with Ross Rossin, the man responsible for that monument, and he’ll bring us that conversation on this week’s podcast.

Looking ahead to the 2021 Atlanta entertainment scene Jan 14, 2021

This week, we take a look ahead into 2021.

For the arts and entertainment, both locally and nationally, it has been a tough year. We miss going to concerts. Touring companies of Broadway hits have shut down their road shows. Even the movie and TV industry have felt the impact, as production became both more expensive and more difficult. Will 2021 be a better year for entertainment? For a glimpse of what’s coming in 2021, arts and entertainment writers at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution have provided a round-up of upcoming shows and events big and small, live and virtual.

Check out last week’s podcast for a look at local arts events and organizations. This week, we’ll look at entertainment options with Melissa Ruggieri and Rodney Ho.

Looking ahead to the 2021 Atlanta arts scene Jan 07, 2021

This week, we take a look ahead into 2021. For the arts and entertainment, both locally and nationally, it has been tough year. Theaters and playhouses remained dark or shifted to virtual-only performances. Concert halls were empty, though some performers shifted to drive-in concerts and online performances. Museums and galleries closed their doors to the public for months. Will things improve in 2021? For a glimpse of what’s to come this year, arts and entertainment writers at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution have provided a round-up of upcoming shows and events big and small, live and virtual.

Next week, we’ll look at entertainment options, but on this week’s podcast we’re talking about the arts with Bo Emerson and Rosalind Bentley.

    Looking Back at 2020 Dec 31, 2020

This week, we take a look back at 2020.

Because life changed so much this year, we had to change how we did things. Suddenly, there were no events, concerts or live theater to tell you about, but there was no shortage of news. There was still plenty to do, but we were doing a lot more of it from our homes. As this truly strange and remarkable year comes to an end, we thought we’d revisit some of our favorite stories with senior editor for Arts and Entertainment Nicole Smith on this week’s AccessAtlanta podcast.

Dawn Williams Boyd’s visual arts show at Atlanta Contemporary Dec 23, 2020

This week, we talk about a virtual visual arts show.

Like everything else, the visual arts have felt the impact of the pandemic. It’s made it more difficult to see the work in person, but it’s also prompted museums and galleries to expand online access. This week, we’re talking about the work of Dawn Williams Boyd, whose work you can actually see in person at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. It offers a perspective on the Black experience, through the medium of quilts, or, as they’re referred to here, cloth paintings. Rosalind Bentley brings us a couple of conversations about this show on this week’s AccessAtlanta podcast

The Year in Music Dec 17, 2020

This week, we talk about the year in music with Melissa Ruggieri.

The pandemic has had a major impact on everything this year, and the recording industry is no exception. Despite all of the obstacles and upheaval, 2020 was a pretty good year for music, at least the recorded variety. Live music is a different and more troubling story.

Take a look back at the sounds of 2020 on this week’s AccessAtlanta podcast

Behind the scenes of Atlanta Ballet's 2020 'Nutcracker' experience Dec 10, 2020

This week accessAtlanta looks at that staple of the holidays, “The Nutcracker.” The season wouldn’t be the same without a performance of this dream-like tale by the Atlanta Ballet, but this year posed some challenges. Atlanta’s nationally recognized troupe devised a variety of solutions – including a drive-in “Nutcracker” – to get around the pandemic and help shake some fairy dust on the month of December.

To find out how, Atlanta Journal-Constitution staff writer Bo Emerson and freelancer Cynthia Perry go backstage and behind the scenes at the ballet on this week’s accessAtlanta podcast.

Tips for reimagining holiday cooking, traditions in 2020 Dec 03, 2020

This week, we’ll take a look at some food-inspired ways to make this unusual holiday season a little brighter.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and for some, it was bittersweet without in-person gatherings with loved ones. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year’s Eve also might not have the usual bevy of family and friends. So, how can we keep things merry and bright as we finish out this challenging year? Cooking can be part of the answer.

On this week’s podcast, AJC dining editor Ligaya Figueras spoke with a few culinarians – Cynthia Graubart, Chadwick Boyd and Ashley English – to see how they’re making the best of the holidays.

Chuck Leavell Interview Nov 25, 2020

This week, the AJC’s Melissa Ruggieri pays a visit to Chuck Leavell and gets a glimpse of his dual life as a rock keyboardist and a tree farmer, which is also explored in the new documentary, “The Tree Man.” When he isn’t onstage with the Rolling Stones or working on albums with John Mayer or the Allman Betts Band, Chuck Leavell isn’t a rock star, even though his enviable silver mane and crinkled-eyed smile always present an aura of understated cool. Hear our interview with Leavell.

The best TV theme songs of all time Nov 19, 2020

This week, we look at the music of television. Television show theme songs have a powerful nostalgic effect. They can transport us back to an earlier time, and remind us of those days. When there were only three networks and a few dozen shows, these songs became so deeply entrenched in the landscape, almost anyone of a certain age could sing the lyrics to “The Brady Bunch” or “Green Acres.” But broadcast TV began scaling back the length of TV theme songs in the 1990s as the pressure to place more ads grew.

Today, we’ll take a look at some of the most memorable tunes that introduced some great TV shows — and maybe a few that weren’t so great — with the AJC’s pop music writer Melissa Ruggieri and our TV and radio expert Rodney Ho.

Bonus: AJC Peachtree Road Race Nov 18, 2020

Foxes and Fossils: two generations making music locally Nov 12, 2020

This week, we look at an unusual local music success story. Foxes and Fossils, a homegrown cover band from Smyrna, has never released a commercial record. They’ve never gone on tour. Their promotion has occurred — almost accidentally — by word of mouth. They began 10 years ago with a performance in a pizza parlor and haven’t progressed much from there. Then, last year, something strange started happening online. Videos of live Foxes and Fossils shows gathered steam on YouTube, led by their video of the Crosby, Stills & Nash 1969 chestnut, “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.”

Hear all about it from the AJC’s Bo Emerson.

Interview: One of Athens' most influential bands Nov 05, 2020

This week, we take a look at a new box set of recordings by one of Athens' most influential bands.

Back in 2009 following the death of Pylon’s guitarist Randy Bewley, the B-52s' Fred Schneider told the AJC, “To me, Pylon was the best band to ever come out of Athens. It still is.” Now, more than 40 years after the band’s debut single “Cool”/"Dub," Pylon will release a career retrospective box set that includes some never-before-released recordings.

In this week’s podcast, we talk with Pylon’s vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay and bassist Michael Lachowski about this new treasure trove.

In this week's episode of accessAtlanta, AJC reporter Rodney Ho spoke with the former college football player and University of Georgia graduate about the film.

Dining in Atlanta in the age of COVID-19 Oct 15, 2020

This week, we look at how restaurants are coping with a changing world. When public health officials recommended socially distanced outdoor dining as the safest way to eat at restaurants during the pandemic, food and drink establishments responded by expanding the footprint of their patios and plopping picnic tables in their parking lots.

The dining team checks in with local restaurants to find out how the business is coping, including efforts to winterize their outdoor spaces. The story is part of a major package that looks at dining and how the restaurant business is coping during the pandemic. Hear all about it from the dining team and some local restaurant owners and chefs on this week’s podcast.

Things to do in Vinings Oct 08, 2020

This week, we visit Vinings. Without a map, it’s hard to tell where Buckhead ends and Vinings begins, since Vinings is actually a part of unincorporated Atlanta even though it’s in Cobb County. It has the feel of a small town with a walkable village, and its streets are lined with beautiful homes surrounded by the Chattahoochee River and lush trees. On this episode, freelance writer Mary Welch joins us to talk about the many fun things to do and see in Vinings.

In this episode of accessAtlanta, Rodney Ho takes us through some of the best in travel-related television.

Classic live albums to revisit Sep 17, 2020

This week, we talk about live music and some classic live albums. We miss live concerts, and we bet many of you do, too. They’re slowly coming back, but in a very different form: smaller audiences, drive-in theaters and other outdoor venues with widely spaced seating. And while they can never take the place of the concert experience, live albums give us a taste of seeing our favorite artists onstage.

Live albums, of course, have been around for a very long time, and AJC music writer Melissa Ruggieri recently compiled a list of a few memorable live albums to revisit. On this week’s podcast, we talk about that list and more, and she’s brought along a special guest.

Filipino flavors and Filipino-American food in Atlanta Sep 10, 2020

You’ll find the cuisine of so many countries and ethnic groups here in our city and the people who bring us this culinary diversity are among those helping to keep us fed in these difficult times.

Our dining editor Ligaya Figueras noticed that one in particular, Filipino-American food, was on the upswing. It’s a cuisine that has special meaning to her. She joins us to discuss this welcome trend and brings us her interviews with some of the people who are making it happen: the people behind the Estrellita, Kamayan ATL and Adobo ATL pop ups and restaurants.

AJC Decatur (Virtual) Book Festival Sep 03, 2020

In this week's episode, we discuss the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival. The AJC Decatur Book Festival, like many large gatherings, is going virtual this year. The event usually brings tens of thousands of visitors to downtown Decatur on Labor Day weekend, but the logistics of putting on this year’s edition have been deemed impractical in the midst of a pandemic.

Instead, the festival organizers will host a series of 15 “virtual events” in honor of the book fest’s 15th anniversary.

On this week’s podcast, we’ll talk about some of the online offerings you’ll find, including the Kidnote event. The AJC’s Bo Emerson spoke with Kidnote speaker Derrick Barnes about “Crown: Ode to the Fresh Cut,” which he wrote with Gordon James. The book offers a kid’s eye view of a day in the life of a barbershop.

In the end, the four-member team won the group piece finals and brought a renewed admiration for Southern artists. Art Amok’s history goes back to the early 2000s when local poets Karen Garrabrant and Theresa Davis started carving out a space where women could take the lead in the poetry scene.
