Episode 81: When’s a Greyhound Not a Greyhound? When He’s a Galgo!
Jul 06, 2019
Trigger Warning: This episode is about a topic that may be a trigger for some and includes discussions about animal abuse. While the host and guests have not detailed abuse, listeners are asked to listen at their discretion.
You may have heard the news … there’s a “shortage” of greyhounds in the States. While that statement isn’t exactly true, there are fewer racing greyhounds available for adoption in the U.S. than there have been in past years. Some greyhound rescue groups have been looking to fill the void by looking across the Atlantic toward Spain. Other rescue groups have been working with Spanish partners for years. Why? Because Spain has an astronomical amount of galgos, also known as “Spanish greyhounds,” that are in desperate need of homes.
Most galgos may look like greyhounds to the untrained eye. But make no mistake, they are quite different from greyhounds.
In this episode, meet Founder Telma Shaw of Galgo Padenco Support based in California. Telma and one of her galgo transporters, Ellen Ganopoulos, sat down with us to answer the question: “What’s the difference between a galgo and a greyhound?” and to talk to us about the plight of galgos in Spain, what’s being done to help them, and The Male Galgo Project.

Jun 29, 2019
Trigger Warning: This episode is about a topic that may be a trigger for some and includes discussions about animal abuse. While the host and guest have not detailed abuse, listeners are asked to listen at their discretion.
There’s no easy way to say it: a small population in China eats dogs, including greyhounds. With underground racing popular among some Chinese, the meat trade in the country is bursting with greyhounds. It’s a horrific situation. But there are brave, compassionate people in China, the UK, and the USA working together to save greyhounds and other dogs trapped in horrific circumstances.
In this episode, we sit down with the founder of Elite Greyhounds South Florida, Sonia Healy Stratemann, to talk about her recent trip to China where she worked with Kerry Lawrence, founder of Candy Cane Rescue in the United Kingdom, and other rescuers to save as many greyhounds and other dogs as possible.

Episode 66: Something to Chew On–Addressing Destructive Chewing
Aug 11, 2018
Chewing is a natural dog behavior. But when it becomes destructive, it does more than ruin your things––it’s also a danger to your greyhound. In this episode, find out more about this behavior, why some greyhounds do it, and how to redirect it.
Check out Kong, one of the most popular chew toys for greyhounds. Add in some peanut butter and freeze the Kong to create an irresistible treat for your hound. Typically, the extra large size works best for greyhounds. If your greyhound is very small (50 pounds or under), the large size may be better.
The Flexi (NOT the hard) Nylabone is an ideal chew toy for greyhounds. Be sure to get one that’s large in size as smaller Flexi Nylabones are a choking hazard for greyhounds.
Looking for a great stuffy for your greyhound? Check out the American Classic Large Rabbit (or other large American Classic toy designs).
Your greyhound may also love the stuffingless stuffies from Outward Hound. Many greyhounds love the Invincible Snake.
Basket muzzles are made specifically for greyhounds and similarly built dogs. Here’s where Jacqueline buys hers; in the very least, check out basket muzzles here so you know what they look like. Most greyhound adoption organizations will provide you with a basket muzzle when you adopt, but it’s always good to have an extra one handy.

Episode 46: Beware of Bloat in Your Greyhound

Greyhound blood is different than all other dog blood. So much so that many test results read differently for greyhounds. They also need to be administered anesthesia at another dosage than all other dogs. Print out this card and keep it in your wallet or scan it with your phone so you always have it with you. Show it to your veterinarian or any emergency veterinarian who may need to work on your greyhound.
