    #284: Dermot Kennedy Dec 09, 2019
    Show notes

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome singer/songwriter Dermot Kennedy to the Upper West Side! Dermot, who hails from a small town outside a small town outside Dublin, Ireland, talks growing up with intermittent internet, an acoustic guitar, no pop culture references, and the most successful musicians he was aware of being his cousin's cover band. We get into his undisciplined busking career in the streets of Dublin, making just enough money to work for a week in a proper studio, his parents being super supportive of his dreams at 18 years old, the realities of producers taking ideas and credit, how he never wanted to be a local celebrity, and how an Ed Sheeran cover gave him viral success. Dermot recalls his first big break thanks to a video app that brought him down to a Florida convention center, how he didn't want to blow up off of other peoples' music, doubling down on his own compositions, putting everything he had into EPs that didn't go anywhere, how a change of mind led him to release his songs as singles, and walking into a venue in London to a large crowd that found him organically through Spotify. We discuss independent success, how labels and publishers came knocking on his door, feeling like he'd already been through the ringer and what ultimately sold him on Island in the UK and Interscope in the US, and how he's taken the States by storm with clever live rearrangements of his own songs as well as Joey Bada$$ and Kanye covers. All that, plus playing Tiny Desk, recording in Brooklyn and LA, the keys to performing the streets of Dublin, teaching himself piano, the status of his Spotify account these days, some major live gigs he hints at playing in 2020, and so much more!

    #283: Cousin Stizz Dec 02, 2019
    Show notes

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal we welcome Boston's own Cousin Stizz to the Upper West Side! Stizz discusses the realities of growing up in Dorchester, the oldest of three children and the son of working class parents who wanted more for him then what they had, how he excelled in certain classes but didn't care for school, the pull of the darker corners outside, and the effect his best friend's death had on him before even reaching high school. Stizz talks his mother's line in the sand, what it was like to bus to the suburbs to a brand new school experience, listening to but not obsessing over music as a teen, and casually finding his way into rap cyphers, where more than anything he got a chance to show off his sense of humor. We break down his mom's driving him to an Army recruiter, his last-minute scheme to stay at home by becoming a producer, how that evolved into composing lyrics, recording his own songs, and keeping them all to himself, and the serendipitous moment where he left a dice game after a last minute invite to crash an open mic where he met up with a number of his contemporaries who'd go on to become his creative partners. Stizz talks about speaking on his circumstances where others hadn't before, the care he puts into perfecting his art, the thought that goes into his process, and what it's like to find out that Drake played your music at a party and broadcast it to the world on Instagram. We get into his meeting at Lyor Cohen's house, how labels came calling, why he ultimately chose to sign with RCA, what he discussed with Donald Glover while they got high, how both loss and success led to scrapping two full albums, what it's like to have Shea Serrano in your corner, why he still loves his city, that infamous Cuba Gooding, Jr. picture, whether a true Bostonian can ever wear a Yankees hat, the reality of Tom Brady getting older, and so much more!

    #282: DJ Toomp Nov 25, 2019
    Show notes

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we went to Means Street Studio in Atlanta to sit down with the legendary producer DJ Toomp about his hall of fame career! Toomp discusses growing up in a musical household in Atlanta, the son of a soul singer, seeing a 60 Minutes segment on DJing in the early 80's, catching Fresh Fest when they stopped through the A, and how he made a name for himself through turntable routines and rocking parties. We get into his time in Miami working and touring with 2 Live Crew, what he took in in terms of production and how to run an independent label via Uncle Luke, his contributions to the New Jack City soundtrack, and the hardest lesson to learn as a young kid in the music business. Toomp talks about returning to Atlanta, then a R&B-heavy city, developing his own sound, trying to fit in with The Organized Noize crew, trying to win over executives at LaFace, and collaborating with local artists like Lil Jon, with whom he worked for free. Toomp recalls the full confidence, the unique flow and the vivid wordplay that a young Clifford Harris brought to the table when they first met, how the whole package reminded him of Jay-Z, the work they put in on songs like 24s, the long drives he made with Jason Geter and T.I. to NYC to try and sell LA Reid on a bigger vision, and after they parted ways with the label, how they proved their legitimacy by taking over not only Atlanta, but the South, resulting in a bigger and better deal with Atlantic Records. And of course, Toomp shares incredible recollections about his collaborations with Tip, Jay-Z, Kanye, Jeezy, Rick Ross and Pitbull, the crazy circumstances behind a doomed sampling of Prince, what record he considers to be way ahead of its time, who he offered What You Know to first, and so much more!

    #280: Dreka Gates Nov 11, 2019
    Show notes

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome Dreka Gates - Kevin Gates' partner in life and business - back to the Upper West Side for her own episode! Dreka discusses her upbringing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, meeting Kevin as a high school senior outside her brother's football game, the phone calls, conversations and intellect they traded as friends before they started dating, the way she responded to his power with words, the heartbreak of her family not wanted the relationship to continue, and the resolve it took to block that out and keep pushing forward with Kevin. We talk about how her selflessness and dedication in helping others led her from pre-med dreams to supporting Kevin's music, how quickly she took to music management, how she saw the road ahead as them against the world, how for a time she dove into the streets to make ends meet, and how together she and Kevin built something lasting and meaningful. Dreka details the independent grind around Louisiana, from the radio stations to the clubs to the local record labels, and how through hard work, putting touring money back into the business, plus a ton of powerful records, they established themselves around the South, attracting attention from major labels, including their future home, Atlantic Records. We get into why they moved their family from Louisiana to Texas to Georgia to Miami and now to Calabasas, whether they're looking to head someplace once again, how they changed their diets, how they raised their children, how they found a balance between work and home life, how it feels to win in the music business on their terms, how Kevin proposed marriage, what it was like to stand before their families and take their wedding vows, and so very much more!!
