    A Tripp Through Comedy

Tripp has rejected mainstream comedies for most of his life.

Now, Ross is taking him film by film through the movies he sadly missed (or smartly avoided) until now.

Join us as we look at studio comedies from the late 90s and early 2000s. Week by week, we will tackle one (or two) films as Tripp tries to figure out what made them so funny and Ross explains the context Tripp avoided.

    Miss Congeniality Jan 09, 2025
    Show notes

Our exit today has us thinking about what is the perfect date. This week, we are talking about Miss Congeniality, written by Marc Lawrence, Katie Ford and Caryn Lucas and directed by Donald Petrie. In addition to the natural comparisons to Drop Dead Gorgeous, we talk Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, Michael Caine, The William Shatner renaissance, hiding donuts, physical comedy, and the Christmas movie season of 2000.

And Ross makes a very bizarre recommendation.

What Women Want Jan 02, 2025
    Show notes

Our exit today has us listening to Meredith Brooks and getting in touch with our feminine side. This week, we are talking about What Women Want, written by Josh Goldsmith, Cathy Yuspa, and Diane Drake and directed by Nancy Myers. Along the way, we talk Mel Gibson, the year of Helen Hunt, Marisa Tomei, more NCIS bosses, bizarre offices, and Roger Ebert's bizarre taste in movies. Plus, Ross recommends a film that shocks Tripp he has never seen before, and Tripp recommends a documentary.

The Ladies Man (with Aaron Neuwirth) Dec 26, 2024
    Show notes

Our exit today has us pouring ourselves a glass of Courvoisier and doling out some relationship advice. This week, we are talking about the grammatically incorrect SNL title The Ladies Man, written by Tim Meadows, Dennis McNicholas and Harper Steele and directed by Reginald Hudlin. And, much to his own chagrin, we are taking our friend Aaron Neuwirth along for the ride.

Along the way, we spend a lot of time discussing SNL movies and what makes them work, the careers of Tim Meadows and Helen Hunt (?), our love of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, song and dance numbers, Chicago locations, and the seemingly huge budget of this film.

And then Tripp unlocks a childhood memory that suddenly makes sense!

    Lucky Numbers Dec 19, 2024
    Show notes

Our exit today has us trying to fix the Pennsylvania lottery. This week, we are talking about Lucky Numbers, written by Adam Resnick and directed by Nora Ephron. Along the way, we discuss the roller coaster career of John Travolta (and Tripp's love of Get Shorty), lottery movies, the bizarre tone of this, the Coen Brothers, TV's Fargo, NYPD Blue, bad schemes, 1990s British films, and even a recent bizarre trend in our films that Tripp points out.

Devil Comedies: Bedazzled and Little Nicky Dec 12, 2024
    Show notes

Our exit today has us wanting to live deliciously and commune with the devil. This week we are talking about two films that depict the Prince of Darkness, Lucifer, albeit in different forms. First, we will talk about Bedazzled, a remake of the Dudley Moore comedy and directed by Harold Ramis. Next, we will talk about Little Nicky, starring Adam Sandler. While one is a modern Faust update, the other is looking at the spawn of Satan trying to save the world and his father. Along the way, we talk about previous versions of the Faust legend, SNL sketches, British New Wave, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hugh Grant's scandals, celebrity cameos, Nosferatu, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and of course, Harvey Keitel.

Meet the Parents (with Alex Perlman) Nov 28, 2024
    Show notes

Our exit today has us going to meet our significant other’s parents and trying to make a good impression. This week, we are talking about Meet the Parents, written by Jim Herzfeld and John Hamburg based on a story by Greg Glienna and Mary Ruth Clarke, and our third film directed by Jay Roach. Is this a perfect Thanksgiving film? We think so!

Along the way, we bring along Alex Perlman to reflect back on the cultural phenomenon that was this movie and why they don't make this like anymore. Plus, Get Out, Godspell and Oklahoma!, the movie stardom of Robert De Niro, and a long journey through the development of this idea and film. And also SNL sketches to film, smoking in movies, the anxiety this film creates, and our love of character actors (James Rebhorn alert!).

    Show notes

Our exit today has us exploring the world of wealthy Dallas society. This week, we are talking about Dr. T & the Women, written by Anne Rapp and directed by Robert Altman. Before we get going, of course, we have to talk about Robert Altman and his meaning for both of us. Then, we talk Dallas, Richard Gere, CinemaScores, Shelley Long, Breaking Bad, Lyle Lovett, and yet another questionable portrait of mental illness.

    Show notes

Our exit today has us living our fantasies in Los Angeles. This week, we are talking about Nurse Betty, written by John C. Richards and James Flamberg and directed by Neil LaBute. Along the way, we celebrate the ensemble of Morgan Freeman, Renee Zellweger, Chris Rock, and of course, our favorite, Allison Janney.

Plus, does this movie cure all of the indiscretions of a season's worth of comedies? One of us seems to think so!
