    A Trial by Podcast

Whether it’s a true crime case or one of history’s most unsettling stories, we understand that the devil is in the details. In each episode, we comb through the facts, scrutinize the suspects, and deliver the disturbing stories that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoy evidence-driven storytelling with a dash of gallows humor to make the disturbing (somewhat) tolerable, we suspect this is the pod for you. But this is A Trial by Podcast, so we’ll let you be the judge.

Ep. 123 | The Mysterious Death of Charles Morgan Jul 28, 2026
    Show notes

In March of 1977, Tucson escrow agent Charles Morgan dropped his daughters at school and vanished. Three days later he stumbled through his front door, hands zip-tied, unable to speak. He wrote to his wife that his throat had been doused with a hallucinogenic drug that would kill him if he talked, and begging her not to call police. Morgan ran Statewide Escrow Service, a business rumored to have ties to organized crime figures in Phoenix and the Bonanno crime family.

Three months later, on June 18th, his body was found in the desert forty miles from home, shot once in the back of the head with his own revolver. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a hidden knife and holster, with no fingerprints on the gun beside him. Gunshot residue was found on his left hand, but Morgan was right-handed.

Despite the contradictions, authorities ruled it suicide. His family has never accepted that finding, and nearly fifty years later, Chuck Morgan's death remains a mystery.

Ep. 122 | The Murder of Konerak Sinthasomphone Jul 21, 2026
    Show notes

On the night of May 27th, 1991, a fourteen-year-old boy named Konerak Sinthasomphone stumbled out of the Oxford Apartments in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was naked, drugged, and bleeding. Three women found him on the sidewalk and called 911. When police arrived, they had everything they needed: a visibly injured victim, three eyewitnesses insisting he was a child, and the man who'd drugged him standing right there, calmly trying to explain it all away. Ten minutes later, officers carried Konerak back upstairs to the man’s apartment - the apartment of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer - where he was strangled to death within the hour.

This isn't a story about whether police could have caught a killer sooner in some abstract sense. It's a story about ten specific minutes, on one specific night, when three private citizens did everything right to stop the murder of a 14-year-old boy, but three sworn officers simply handed him back to his killer. Konerak didn't die because no one noticed. He died because the people who noticed weren’t believed, and the people with the power to act chose not to.

    Ep. 121 | Sherri Papini: 22 Days Missing [Part 2] Jul 14, 2026
    Show notes

On the afternoon of November 2nd, 2016, a thirty-four-year-old stay-at-home mother named Sherri Papini went for a jog near her home in Mountain Gate, a small community just outside of Redding, in Northern California’s Shasta County. She left her two young children at daycare, laced up her shoes, and headed out into a mild autumn afternoon. She did not come back.

Her husband, Keith Papini, returned from work that evening to find an empty house. The children were still at daycare β€” uncharacteristically uncollected. He used the Find My iPhone app to trace Sherri’s phone and drove to the location it showed: a roadside near Sunrise Drive, about a mile from their home. What he found there was her cell phone and her earbuds, lying in the dirt on the side of the road. Wound around the earbuds were several strands of blonde hair.

Sherri Papini was gone, and 22 days later she would reappear on the side of a road 150 miles from her home, looking gaunt, with a chain tied around her waist, and the word β€œexodus” branded into her back. It was a story that seemed to demand justice β€” and it would, eventually, get it, just not in the way anyone expected.

Ep. 119 | The Murder of Helle Crafts Jun 30, 2026
    Show notes

In November 1986, Helle Crafts was reported missing. Danish flight attendant and mother of three, Helle had been planning to leave her husband after discovering he'd been having an affair.

What followed was one of the most gruesome and forensically groundbreaking murder investigations in American history. Because there was no body. There was no crime scene. There was, however, a rented woodchipper, a freezer purchased just days before Helle vanished, and a witness who spotted a man feeding something into a chipper on the banks of the Housatonic River in the dead of a blizzard.

Investigators ultimately recovered bone fragments, a fingernail, strands of blonde hair, and a single crown from Helle's tooth β€” enough to piece together what Richard Crafts had done to his wife, and enough to put him away. He became the first person in Connecticut history to be convicted of murder without a body.

This is the story of Helle Crafts β€” and the case that changed forensic investigation forever.

Ep. 118 | The Vanishing of the Springfield Three [Part 2 of 2] Jun 23, 2026
    Show notes

On June 6, 1992, 19-year-old Suzie Streeter and 18-year-old Stacy McCall proudly walked across the stage and received their diplomas from Springfield, Missouri’s Kickapoo high school. Like any other teen on graduation day, the girls had a long night of party hopping ahead of them before they ended up back at Suzie’s house to spend the night before going to a waterpark with friends the next morning.

However, when friends Janelle Kirby and Mike Henson came to get them the next morning, they found the house empty. Stacy, Suzie, and Suzie’s mom, 47-year-old Sherill Levitt, were gone, all three of the women’s cars, keys, and purses were at the house.

Even stranger, the phone rang while they were there. Janelle answered, and a man's voice on the other end immediately launched into sexual remarks. To this day, the man remains unidentified, and Suzie, Stacy, and Sherill have never been seen again. This is the story of the Springfield Three.

Ep. 116 | The Disappearance of Cindy Anderson Jun 09, 2026
    Show notes

On August 4, 1981, twenty-year-old Cindy Anderson went to work as a legal secretary at a Toledo, Ohio law office. With just ten days left before she was set to leave for Bible college, vanished from work that day without a trace. When her bosses arrived that afternoon, her car was in the parking lot, but Cindy was gone. The romance novel Cindy had been reading was left open on her desk, as if she had been interrupted while reading it. The page it was open to was the only violent scene in the book, where the female protagonist is abducted and knifepoint.

In the weeks prior, she had been receiving deeply disturbing phone calls at the office and suffering from recurring nightmares about being attacked, prompting her employers to install an emergency buzzer at her desk and leading her to keep the office doors locked at all times, yet Cindy did not ring the buzzer the day she disappeared. To this day, Cindy has never been found.

    Ep. 115 | The Camm Family Murders [Part 2 of 2] Jun 02, 2026
    Show notes

On the night of September 28th, 2000, former Indiana State Police trooper David Camm came home from a church basketball game to find his wife Kim and their two young children, Bradley and Jill, shot to death in the garage of their Georgetown, Indiana home.

Some believed it was the husband β€” a serial cheater, with life insurance policies on his family and his daughter's blood on his shirt. Others believed it was a convicted predator who had walked out of prison three months before the murders, whose M.O. seemed to fit the crime.Prosecutors would eventually argue it was both men, working together β€” despite there not being a single piece of evidence proving they had ever met.

There would be thirteen years of trials, convictions, appeals, and reversals. Alleged evidence suppression and fabricated expert credentials. Blood spatter evidence that experts would eventually call guesswork, used to convict a man twice. Jailhouse informants with violent criminal records of their own. A DNA database query that took two hours but wasn’t run for four years. A prosecutor who allegedly lied to the defense, pressured analysts to change their testimony, and threatened a witness with obstruction charges when she refused. Allegations of evidence tampering that reached into the police evidence room itself. And at the center of all of it, a man serving thirteen years in prison for murders the evidence had pointed away from him since the night they were committed.
