A Fork In Time: The Alternate History Podcast

Explore the realm of alternate histories as we explore the “what ifs” that can flow from history’s most pivotal moments. Each episode will focus on a specific moment in time–the fork–where history could have taken a different path. A Fork In Time encourages contributions and participation by our community of listeners who have become an integral and vital part of the show.

This feed is also the home of our companion show, The Room Where It Happened, featuring the team looking at significant historical events without the alternative prespective.

    Episode 0097—AFIT Archive: No PARCing
The podcast is taking a "spring break", but we thought an episode from the "early days" that many of our new listeners might have heard might a good idea. We are working a number of exciting new episodes in the coming months, including a large number of listener-suggested topics and new guests.
Here are the original show notes from Episode 22 "No PARCing"....
In the early 1970s, Xerox ruled the office copier world and had the vision to establish the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) as an innovation catalyst for new technologies that would enable it to expand its place as a technology leader. PARC was the place where the first personal computer, computer network, graphical user interfaces, and computer mice all had their start—none of which became part of the next phase of Xerox.

How might the world be different today if Xerox had the vision to be the company that delivered the visionary advances spawned by its own creation—PARC—to the world?

The commercial for the Xerox Alto—arguably the first “personal computer”:

On January 3, 1896, Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II sent a telegram to Transvaal Republic President, Johannes Kruger congratulating him on the recent success in repelling an attack from British raiders. In the real timeline, the telegram caused heightened tensions between Britain and Germany.
How would history have been different if further actions had followed the telegram to continue to cause strife between the factions in southern Africa?

In the early 1950s, Jonas Salk and other scientists led the effort to develop and deploy an effective vaccine against polio. In subsequent decades, significant progress was made to eradicate other diseases through the development of successful vaccines and widespread immunization programs.
How might the course of medical and social history be different if Salk's vaccine had proved ineffective or delayed? What are the lessons and implications of those vaccines on the current global pandemic and efforts to stem the spread of COVID?

While the guns and steel of European explorers and conquerors proved deadly to the indigenous people of the New World, the most devasting impact came in the form of new diseases for which they had no immunity. However, imagine the possibility of the reverse being true where those coming to the New World face a disease threat for which they are not prepared. How might that have altered the course of early encounters between Old and New?
