In a brutally honest and transparent episode, Dan talks about living in constant fear. Living in fear every single day dates back to his childhood. For every fear Dan has, he's developed or obtained different methods to combat each fear to no avail. It's a vicious cycle and a perpetually losing battle. He even fears success. A Thankless Job Nov 24, 2020

Dan shares how he was summoned again for jury duty for the second time this year. He also talks about gun ownership while having anxiety issues. The main topic of the show is public service. The images that civilians typically see of the military, police officers, firefighters, etc. often make the jobs look glamorous. P shares how that's not really the case as he details his 8-years of service as a firefighter and EMT. Dan is joined by @PFromCharlotte to discuss how anxiety doesn't necessarily mean "afraid." Dan talks about how even though he has severe anxiety when it comes to interacting with people and generally avoids people at all costs, he will confront someone if it is 100% absolutely necessary, which he had to do recently. Even then the outcome of such a confrontation will usually have less than desirable outcomes. P talks about how just being Black alone is to be in a constant state of anxiousness even if you have no previous mental health disorders. This week Dan is joined by Paul to voice their frustration when it comes to this presidential election, the mismanagement of our country, the pandemic response, and how it affects us. It seems like nearly everyone is angry in 2020, no matter who or what they support. We talk about distancing ourselves from Trump supporters, withdrawing from social media and social interaction, and having to deal with an antagonist that looks like low budget versions of us. Dan shares his thoughts on the murder of Jonathan Price and how he would never find humor in the death of an unarmed Black man at the hands of the police, no matter the victim's personal beliefs. Growth vs. Hypocrisy Jul 19, 2020

Dan opens up about the uncomfortable but brutally honest dialogue he's been having internally. He talks about learning to be able to laugh at himself, friendships based on terms and conditions, and how people often hide behind who they want people to believe they are. Dan explains how he's conflicted between growth and being a hypocrite. A lot of the things Dan will not tolerate or finds reprehensible, he's done before. Things like being judgemental, having a huge ego, lying, taking advantage of people, and being mentally/verbally abusive at times. How can you despise someone for doing some of the same things that you've done yourself? Does being ashamed of and finding these actions disgusting represent growth? I'm Broke as a Joke! Feb 08, 2020

Dan wanted to dispel the rumor started by his brothers Haize and AJ that he was rich lol. Although a joke, it led to this episode's topic being finances, financial responsibility, and financial insecurity. As discussed in prior episodes, Dan is an 8th-grade dropout with a GED who grew up in extreme poverty. He talks about not knowing the value of a dollar until his early 20s. Since then he's lived with what he calls a "poor mentality" in order to prevent spending money unnecessarily and saving every dollar like it's his last. Dan also talks about how he beat the odds by being a troubled teen, middle-school dropout, and alcoholic with no direction, to becoming a high level IT professional and small business owner. Becoming a Man Without a Father. Dec 09, 2019

Dan discusses how he thinks not having a father affected him. Single-parent households are not unique or uncommon at all, especially in communities of color. Since Dan never had a father figure to use as a point of reference, he doesn't know how truly affected he is by not having one. He can only speculate and share some of his childhood memories. This week Dan and P talk about how they've intentionally hurt people (and themselves) both physically and emotionally in the past. 18-20 years later there's not much remorse because we can still see the justification in our actions, even though each situation could've been handled better. Since P is a father of many, many, m-ma-mm-ma-many children, Dan wanted to know if he fears passing some of the traits of his mental illness on to his children. Since children often learn by watching, it's not hard to believe that they can learn and adopt "abnormal" behavior and think it's normal. For instance, if a parent has OCD and washes their hands 150x per day, their child may think that's normal. Symptoms Return. Jun 14, 2019

Disclaimer: This episode gets extremely random, maybe even offensive at times but we had a great time recording it. It's our loosest episode to date. We've both been going through rough times for a little over a month now. P has been off of his psychiatric medication totally for almost 2 years, until about 10 days ago. Recently P's insomnia, depression and heightened anxiety have returned big-time, prompting him to make an appointment with his doctor and be placed back on medication. P talks about what he was going through and his reaction to his medication and some of the altercations he's been in since adjusting to them. Dan has been depressed for the better part of 2 months combined with a feeling of hopelessness and a growing anger/frustration. He comes to the realization that he doesn't live in the present. He spends the present thinking about the past and the future while neglecting what's actually currently happening. This episode was a much needed relief for the both of us because how random it is and our ability to make light of what were pretty serious medical issues, including getting cameras shoved into their urethras and colonoscopies. P also explains some of the differences between psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors/social workers. Dan shares how he was prescribed Seroquel for insomnia and why that was an irresponsible choice of medication by his doctor. He also details his worst panic attack to date. P talks about how he was prescribed numerous medications at their max dosages to be taken simultaneously. Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Mar 30, 2019

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) affects more than 10 million people in the United States alone and can be linked to other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, OCD, anorexia and bulimia to name a few. The perceived flaws are often obsessed over even if no one else notices them and can lead to societal withdrawal, multiple cosmetic surgeries, or attempts to disguise it. Dan and Paul go over the definition and symptoms of BDD and the different ways it affects people. We also share issues we've had with body image at different points in our lives and how we can relate to people with BDD and how they feel. Unnatural Habitats. Mar 14, 2019

Dan and P reflect on their childhoods and how growing up in the DC area during the peak of the crack epidemic may have contributed to our mental health issues. Both Dan and P were born into poverty and raised in high crime neighborhoods. P grew up in a project house that consisted of 10+ people and he thought everyone had random apartment inspections up until he was a teenager. He shares what it was like growing up as a bi-racial kid in a blended family. After Dan's mother left his abusive father her and Dan ended up living in a homeless shelter for women and children. After getting on a government assistance program Dan's mother and another family from the homeless shelter moved into a roach and rat infested apartment in one of the worst areas of the city. Recklessness. Feb 28, 2019

In episode 9 of A Few Screws Loose Dan and Paul have a discussion about reckless behavior. We quickly go over some of the mental illnesses that are associated with reckless behavior, before landing on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD consists of numerous symptoms that can easily be misdiagnosed as other mental illnesses. We go over some of the symptoms and how closely we can relate to these symptoms. It's kind of scary how many of these symptoms a "normal" person would be able to identify with, which is why self-diagnosis and online tests are not recommended. We also take a trip down memory lane about strange and reckless things we've done in the past and how moving away from our hometown essentially saved both of our lives.
