Chris Brooks is the senior pastor of Woodside Bible Church, a multisite congregation across the Detroit metropolitan area. T There are Irish proverbs, Buddhist proverbs, and proverbs from just about every spoken language. The book of Proverbs in the Bible, however, is God breathed and God inspired - making its wisdom divine and set apart.

Today we are joined by Karen Ellis for a conversation all about the book of Proverbs - what it is, how to read it, and how its wisdom applies to our life today.

Karen Ellis is the Director of the Center for the Study of the Bible & Ethnicity at Reformed Theological Seminary (Atlanta). She holds Master’s degrees from Yale University and Westminster Theological Seminary, and is a Ph.D. candidate at Oxford Center for Mission Studies in Oxford, England. Since 2003, she has worked as an advocate for the global persecuted Church, raising awareness and promoting indigenous leadership in countries where Christianity is restricted or repressed. Karen is married to Dr. Carl F. Ellis, Jr., a Professor of Theology and Culture at RTS.

Charles Dyer (BA, Washington Bible College; ThM and PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary) served as provost and dean of education at Moody Bible Institute before becoming professor-at-large of Bible at Moody and host of The Land and the Book radio program. Before coming to Moody, Charlie served for 20 years in multiple administrative and faculty roles at Dallas Theological Seminary, ultimately serving as executive vice president under Chuck Swindoll. In addition to his role as host of The Land and the Book radio program, Charlie is an Old Testament scholar and an authority on Middle Eastern history and geography. He also served as associate pastor of Grace Bible Church in Sun City, Arizona.

Charlie has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East for more than 30 years and has led more than 80 trips. His second book Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope was published by IVP academic in 2020. It won numerous awards including Christianity Today’s book of the year. Since then, his work has continued to expand into more public theology, and he is the author of many works including a new memoir How far to the Promised Land, and a children’s book entitled Josie Johnson’s Hair and the Holy Spirit.

Nancy Guthrie teaches the Bible at her home church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee, as well as at conferences around the country and internationally, including her Biblical Theology Workshop for Women. She is the author of numerous books, including Saints and Scoundrels in the Story of Jesus and God Does His Best Work With Empty. She is the host of the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast at The Gospel Coalition. She and her husband host Respite Retreats for couples who have faced the death of a child and are co-hosts of the GriefShare video series.
