    Awards!
Hutchinson Island Shore Protection Project wins ASBPA Best Restored Beaches

The Hutchinson Island Shore Protection Project named a recipient of the prestigious 2026 Best Restored Beach Award by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA), recognizing the project as one of the nation’s most successful coastal restoration efforts.

Originally constructed in 1995, the Hutchinson Island Shore Protection Project was created to stabilize a critically eroded section of coastline. Over the past three decades, ongoing monitoring and adaptive management strategies have produced significant environmental benefits, including strengthened dune systems, a wider and more resilient beach, and enhanced nesting habitat for sea turtles.

Today, the project serves as a national model for data-driven coastal management, demonstrating how strategic restoration efforts can successfully preserve dynamic beach ecosystems while delivering lasting environmental, recreational, and community benefits.

Thanks to Martin County’s General Services Department for their care and craftsmanship in relocating Silent Sounds of Service by artist Gary Gresko to its new home at Fire Station 21 in the Old Palm City CRA!

As part of Martin County’s Art in Public Places collection, this powerful sculptural wind chime features five suspended bells representing the five branches of the United States military, each incorporating authentic military artifacts that accompanied service members during times of conflict. The interiors of the bells are painted red, symbolizing the commitment carried within those who serve, while sculptural epaulets above reference ceremonial traditions of honor and recognition.

Though shaped like a wind chime, the piece is intentionally silent—inviting reflection on service, remembrance, and the often-unspoken contributions of military members and their families.

Beach Fire Permits: At Stuart Beach, fires are permitted from November through February, during the non-turtle nesting season, between 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., in designated fire pits. A valid permit is required. https://www.martin.fl.us/BeachFire
