    1865 – Airship / Wondery

April 15, 1865. President Lincoln is dead and the country in turmoil.
Secretary of War Edwin Stanton takes control, determined to bring the assassin to justice—but the hunt for John Wilkes Booth isn’t all that grips Stanton.
Lincoln’s successor, Vice President Andrew Johnson, is likely to bend to southern interests and undo the very progress for which Lincoln died. Edwin Stanton must employ every bit of political wile he can muster to secure the future of the freed slaves, and the nation.
Consumed by his conviction, Stanton will betray his friends, his honor, and the very constitution he is sworn to protect, all to steer the country towards justice.

1865 Presents American Elections: Wicked Game | Greeley vs Grant: Progress Under Siege Jun 22, 2021

At the end of episode seven, President Ulysses S. Grant declares martial law and wages war against the Ku Klux Klan, a decision that sets the table for the upcoming presidential election. Coming up in episode eight, the story jumps forward in time past the election of 1872.

But there is some important history in between. This week, we’re again going to fill in those gaps with an episode from the podcast American Elections: Wicked Game. Hosted by 1865 executive producer Lindsay Graham, it’s an in-depth look at all 59 U.S. presidential elections.

In 1872, the Reform Republicans, properly known as the Liberal Republicans, turned on President Grant, abandoned the Republican Party and united with the Democrats. To defeat Grant at the ballot box, the Democrats nominated a New York newspaperman, a Republican named Horace Greeley. Like he had done in 1868, Grant took his cues from George Washington and stayed silent during the contest. But Horace Greeley launched an aggressive campaign, attacking Grant's policies, assailing his character and accusing him of corruption. Once again, the election was a referendum on Reconstruction: would the American people stand by the Hero of Appomatox? Or would they vote to turn back the clock on social progress?

Please enjoy Episode 22 from the podcast American Elections: Wicked Game: 1872, Greeley vs Grant: Progress Under Siege.

1865 Presents American Elections: Wicked Game May 18, 2021

At the end of episode three, Ulysses S. Grant decided to run as the Republican nominee for president in the 1868 election. Coming up in episode four, Grant is inaugurated.

But there is some important history in between. This week, we’re going to fill in those gaps with an episode from another podcast. Hosted by executive producer Lindsay Graham, American Elections: Wicked Game is an in-depth look at all 59 U.S. presidential elections.

In 1868, while Andrew Johnson went on an early and norm-breaking campaign tour to promote his reelection, he was not ultimately chosen to lead the Democratic ticket. Instead, it was Horatio Seymour of New York that went head-to-head with Grant.

But the battle lines were the same: was the country to remain a “white man’s government,” as Seymour promised it would, or could Grant take back the reins of Reconstruction, and lead a broken nation to healing through equity?

Please enjoy Episode 21 from the podcast American Elections: Wicked Game: 1868, Seymour vs Grant: The Rise of the General.

    Totalus Rankium | 17 Oct 08, 2019

Last week, 1865 writers and co-creators Steve Walters and Erik Archilla spoke with the hosts of the podcast Totalus Rankium--an irreverent and often cheeky revue of American presidents from a Brittish perspective. These two gents, Rob and Jamie, rank each president in categories of statesmanship, scandal, how Hollywood-ready they are, and how good their official portrait is.

The podcast aired over the weekend, but Rob and Jaimie were kind enough to allow me to rebroadcast the episode on our feed. I hope you enjoy it, and if you do, be sure to subscribe to Totalus Rankium--they’ve just finished their ranking of Rutherford B Hayes, who of course succeeded Ulysses S Grant, who of course succeeded Andrew Johnson.

It’s a great show, amusing but informative, much like their conversation with Steve and Erik.
