However, as the investigation continued, friends and family quickly realized that Chris Watts was not the man he made himself out to be.
To understand how a man who once seemed like a perfect father and husband became a family annihilator, we need to take a look at his upbringing.

BTK Dennis Rader Part 2 Oct 21, 2021
    Show notes

This is part 2 and starts with Dennis Rader's murder of the Otero family, and continues through his sentencing. The reason this episode is much longer than normal, is because I added parts of the audio from Denis Rader's court confession. It's such a cold and heartless recounting, in his own words, that tells you what kind of person he is better than I can describe.

BTK Dennis Rader Part 1 Oct 19, 2021
    Show notes

When something terrible happens, something that is so evil, it transcends the limits of human understanding, we begin to look for an explanation. For example, when a mass murderer takes 50 innocent lives in a ruthless killing spree, we look at that person and think, what caused them to commit such a gruesome act. Was there a mental illness behind everything, or perhaps in their past happened something so terrible, it eventually made them a killer? Or were they just born evil?
Many serial killers have been able to successfully hide out in plain sight for even extremely long periods of time. Those who successfully blend in are typically employed, have families and homes and outwardly appear non-threatening, average members of society. They look just like everyone else. So what drives them to take a human life?
This time we take a look at Dennis Lynn Rader, or as he is known, BTK killer's life and past and see if there were any signs typical for future serial killers or if his childhood and life before his crimes were just as ordinary as anybody else's.

The Wood Chipper Oct 14, 2021
    Show notes

Corpus delicti is a Latin term from the Western legal theory that literally means "body of the crime." This principle requires proof that a crime took place before an individual can be charged with that crime. Thus, what comes to homicide, the corpse is often the most crucial piece of evidence that helps to make the conviction possible. So what happens if there is no body?
In England, the view of "no body, no murder" persisted for centuries after three individuals were hanged for the death of another man in 1660, but two years later, the man in question appeared alive and well. However, even though this incident was unfortunate, the idea that rightful conviction could not happen without a body was false. You just need to make sure all other evidence is overwhelming, like in the case of Helle Crafts.

Ruthie McCoy and the True Story of Candyman Oct 12, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever heard about the girl who was one night hearing ominous dripping coming from within her home? She was scared, but her faithful dog was keeping her company under the bed, licking her hand off and on in comfort. Eventually, the girl had to investigate the noise, only to find her dog slaughtered in the bathroom and a message written in blood –
    "Humans can lick hands too."
You probably have heard the story before – it is a popular urban legend. Urban myths are spread by word of mouth, creating modern folklore. But while urban legends are mostly modern-day fairytales, some of them have a true story behind them. One of those stories is the legend of Candyman, the hooked killer who can be summoned by saying his name five times to a mirror. While Candyman's tale, with its supernatural elements, is scary and makes you avoid mirrors for a good while, the true story behind the urban legend is no less frightening. 52-year-old Ruthie McCoy did not purposely summon a killer in her apartment in 1987, but the end result was the same.

Monster: Aileen Wuornos Oct 07, 2021
    Show notes

According to The Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology, only around 16% of all serial killers are female. In fact, they are so rare that even the man credited with coining the term "serial killer," FBI profiler Robert K. Ressler, did not discuss female killers at all in his research. As he said in his 1992 book Whoever Fights Monsters, there has been only one female that "has been arrested and accused as a serial killer — Aileen Wuornos."Aileen was not just an exception to the rule of serial killers being mostly white males in their twenties or thirties, but she also did not fit the typical characteristics of female serial killers. Aileen killed outdoors instead of at home, used a gun instead of poison, and killed strangers instead of friends or family. Still, in a letter to her friend Dawn, Aileen said he never wanted to kill in the first place. So what drove her to take the lives of seven men and eventually becoming a monster as we know her today?
(FYI- this episode goes a little longer than normal... whoops)

Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

As Halloween is just around the corner, it is time for jack-o-lanterns, costume planning, and stocking up on all our favorite Halloween candy. But what really sets the mood for the spooky season is turning off all the lights, cozying up on the couch and rewatching all the classic Halloween movies. Some of us prefer more light-hearted flicks, which offer both thrills and laughter. But then there are those who love freaking themselves out with the scariest movies they can find. After all, we have the comfort that the events in the film were not real, and after the closing credits, we can go back to our lives as if nothing happened.
But what if somebody actually went through that terror in real life?
Many of us are familiar with notorious fictional characters like Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Norman Bates from Psycho. But did you know these movie serial killers were all inspired by a real person? A man named Ed Gein.

Broken Arrow Massacre Sep 30, 2021
    Show notes

At around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, a call came in 911 dispatch in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. The operator heard screaming and sounds of struggle in the background before a young boy's voice saying that somebody was attacking his family. Before getting any more information about what was happening, the call ended after more inaudible screams as someone clearly took the phone from the original caller. The operator searched the number and was able to track the address, but after a failed attempt to contact the owner of the house, David Bever, officers were dispatched to the scene at 709 Magnolia Ct. Upon arriving, they saw an alarming amount of blood on the front porch. As the officers knocked on the door, they heard a girl's voice inside, screaming for help. Once they forced their way in, the officers found a 13-year-old girl, Crystal Bever, who had been stabbed repeatedly and her throat slit but was still somehow alive. After moving Crystal outside to safety, officers returned to investigate the rest of the house. What they found was straight out of a horror movie.

Beasts of Satan Sep 28, 2021
    Show notes

On January 17, 1998, 16-year-old Fabio Tollis and 19-year-old Chiara Marino suddenly disappeared. The couple had spent their Saturday night drinking beer and listening to heavy metal music at Midnight Pub in Milan, Italy. But, they never made it back home.
Authorities first thought that Fabio and Chiara had just run off together, but their parents refused to accept that their children would just up and disappear. Fabio's father, Michele, began his own 6 year investigation, that included him going to several metal concerts and festivals across Europe and spreading the word of his missing son. During his search, Michele became absolutely convinced that Fabio and his friend's group had not just been interested in playing black metal and death metal but were also deeply obsessed with Satanism and the Occult... members of the group called themselves the Beasts of Satan.
(Side note, the subject matter is super dark and real devil worshipy… so heads up.)
