    Psalm 7 ESV, In You Do I Take Refuge Mar 06, 2026
    Show notes

    In You Do I Take Refuge

    A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite.

    7 O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge;
    save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,
    2 lest like a lion they tear my soul apart,
    rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.

    3 O Lord my God, if I have done this,
    if there is wrong in my hands,
    4 if I have repaid my friend with evil
    or plundered my enemy without cause,
    5 let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it,
    and let him trample my life to the ground
    and lay my glory in the dust. Selah

    6 Arise, O Lord, in your anger;
    lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;
    awake for me; you have appointed a judgment.
    7 Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you;
    over it return on high.

    8 The Lord judges the peoples;
    judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness
    and according to the integrity that is in me.
    9 Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
    and may you establish the righteous—
    you who test the minds and hearts,
    O righteous God!
    10 My shield is with God,
    who saves the upright in heart.
    11 God is a righteous judge,
    and a God who feels indignation every day.

    12 If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;
    he has bent and readied his bow;
    13 he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,
    making his arrows fiery shafts.
    14 Behold, the wicked man conceives evil
    and is pregnant with mischief
    and gives birth to lies.
    15 He makes a pit, digging it out,
    and falls into the hole that he has made.
    16 His mischief returns upon his own head,
    and on his own skull his violence descends.

    17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness,
    and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.

    I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You - Pablo Neruda Mar 06, 2026
    Show notes

    I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You By Pablo Neruda

    I do not love you except because I love you;
    I go from loving to not loving you,
    From waiting to not waiting for you
    My heart moves from cold to fire.
    I love you only because it's you the one I love;
    I hate you deeply, and hating you
    Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
    Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.
    Maybe January light will consume
    My heart with its cruel
    Ray, stealing my key to true calm.
    In this part of the story I am the one who
    Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
    Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

    Be Nobody’s Darling - Alice Walker Feb 27, 2026
    Show notes

    Be Nobody's Darling By Alice Walker

    Be nobody's darling;
    Be an outcast.
    Take the contradictions
    Of your life
    And wrap around
    You like a shawl,
    To parry stones
    To keep you warm.
    Watch the people succumb
    To madness
    With ample cheer;
    Let them look askance at you
    And you askance reply.
    Be an outcast;
    Be pleased to walk alone
    (Uncool)
    Or line the crowded
    River beds
    With other impetuous
    Fools.
    Make a merry gathering
    On the bank
    Where thousands perished
    For brave hurt words
    They said.
    But be nobody's darling;
    Be an outcast.
    Qualified to live
    Among your dead.

    Never to Dream of Spiders - Audre Lorde Feb 20, 2026
    Show notes

    Never to Dream of Spiders by Audre Lorde

    Time collapses between the lips of strangers

    my days collapse into a hollow tube

    soon implodes against now

    like an iron wall

    my eyes are blocked with rubble

    a smear of perspectives

    blurring each horizon

    in the breathless precision of silence

    one word is made.

    Once the renegade flesh was gone

    fall air lay against my face

    sharp and blue as a needle

    but the rain fell through October

    and death lay a condemnation

    within my blood.

    The smell of your neck in August

    a fine gold wire bejeweling war

    all the rest lies

    illusive as a farmhouse

    on the other side of a valley

    vanishing in the afternoon.

    Day three day four day ten

    the seventh step

    a veiled door leading to my golden anniversary

    flameproofed free-paper shredded

    in the teeth of a pillaging dog

    never to dream of spiders

    and when they turned the hoses upon me

    a burst of light.

    Audre Lorde was an American writer, professor, philosopher, intersectional feminist, poet, and civil rights activist. As a poet, she is well known for technical mastery and emotional expression, as well as her poems that express anger and outrage at civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life.

    Poetry - Nikki Giovanni Feb 06, 2026
    Show notes

    Poetry by Nikki Giovanni

    poetry is motion graceful
    as a fawn
    gentle as a teardrop
    strong like the eye
    finding peace in a crowded room
    we poets tend to think
    our words are golden
    though emotion speaks too
    loudly to be defined
    by silence
    sometimes after midnight or just before
    the dawn
    we sit typewriter in hand
    pulling loneliness around us
    forgetting our lovers or children
    who are sleeping
    ignoring the weary wariness
    of our own logic
    to compsoe a poem
    no one understands it
    it never says 'love me' for poets are
    beyond love
    it never says 'accept me' for poems seke not
    acceptance but controversy
    it only says 'i am' and therefore
    i concede that you are too
    a poem is pure energy
    horizontally contained
    between the mind
    of the poet and the ear of the reader
    if it does not sing discard the ear
    for poetry is song
    if it does not deligh discard
    the heart for poetry is joy
    if it does not inform then close
    off the brain for it is dead
    if it cannot heed the insistent message
    that life is precious
    which is all we poets
    wrapped in our loneliness
    are trying to say

    love is more thicker than forget - E. E. Cummings Jan 30, 2026
    Show notes

    love is more thicker than forget by E. E. Cummings

    love is more thicker than forget
    more thinner than recall
    more seldom than a wave is wet
    more frequent than to fail

    it is most mad and moonly
    and less it shall unbe
    than all the sea which only
    is deeper than the sea

    love is less always than to win
    less never than alive
    less bigger than the least begin
    less littler than forgive

    it is most sane and sunly
    and more it cannot die
    than all the sky which only
    is higher than the sky

    Remember - Christina Rossetti Jan 23, 2026
    Show notes

    Remember By Christina Rossetti

    Remember me when I am gone away,

    Gone far away into the silent land;

    When you can no more hold me by the hand,

    Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.

    Remember me when no more day by day

    You tell me of our future that you plann'd:

    Only remember me; you understand

    It will be late to counsel then or pray.

    Yet if you should forget me for a while

    And afterwards remember, do not grieve:

    For if the darkness and corruption leave

    A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

    Better by far you should forget and smile

    Than that you should remember and be sad.

    Excerpt from "I Have A Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan 16, 2026
    Show notes

    Excerpt from "I Have A Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. 2 I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring." And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. (full speech link below)
