A client of mine runs a multi-million-dollar business. She’s respected by everyone in her field, yet she once said to me, “I could do this with my eyes closed. I want something more.”
And then she went on, “I’m not lonely, but I’m very alone. There’s no one else I dare share this with but you.”

One challenge of being a high performer is that you can be surrounded by people whose only mission is to say “yes” to you, who want to make you feel good, or say what they think you need to hear.

Oh this was fun! You see, in this top 10 episode, I start to chat to Ervine before we hit record and she makes a little joke about me mistaking her for a high-performer. I immediately ask if I can start recording because I want to illustrate something important.

I’m a scientist by training. I have a joint degree in Biology and Economics. And that background in biology meant that I spent hours and hours of the early part of my life studying, researching and experimenting in a laboratory.

The Latin root of the word “laboratory” literally means to work. The word “experiment” comes from the Latin, meaning to try and to risk. The word “research” comes from Latin, meaning “to wander hither and thither.”

So, what we call science literally means hard work, taking risks and not really knowing where you’re going!

S16EP02: “Fear is a mask for desire..." (Replay) May 19, 2022

Fear is often a mask for desire. When Rich hears that, he looks past the fear and tries to uncover the desire behind the mask. Rich was able to remove this mask with his guest today, Niki Parker. Niki works for the International Red Cross. She set up a coaching program for the World Economic Forum and created an online digital campaign that generated millions of dollars and raised awareness of the environment. Niki tried to sell her limitations and fear to Rich but he wasn’t buying it. Through 1 insight she is able to see that what she thinks is fear is, in fact, the energy she has for her greatest desires. She realizes that she is so busy that she hasn’t sat down to create her specific intentions to focus that energy Intention is powerful.

I have a handful of Thinking Partner clients. They invest $47K for around 5 months. I have 1-2 Concierge Trusted Advisor clients a year who invest $185K to have access to me when they need it. You may be surprised at how little they need that access. And My Thinking Partner clients are often complete way before our 30 minute calls are complete.

But here's the thing, my clients are NOT paying for my time. They are paying for their insights. And their insights are priceless.

Oh this was fun! You see, I start to chat to Ervine before we hit record and she makes a little joke about me mistaking her for a high-performer. I immediately ask if I can start recording because I want to illustrate something important.

Marianne Williamson captured it in her poem: "Our deepest fear is not that we are weak. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us."

Too often, I see leaders fighting for their limitations. And that's always when I jump in.

Ervine is a fascinating woman with a background in high-level sales. She has had a successful career that was built one relationship at a time. When I ask her how many coaching clients she wants, she is a little surprised to realize that it is no more than 12 clients a year.

Four of the most powerful words you can ever say to a client are, "Tell me your story..."

Tatiana was a Managing Director of an investment bank, where she was responsible for managing billions of dollars of assets. She is now a high-level coach and consultant.

But this wasn't a clear path.

Tatiana grew up behind the Iron Curtain, at a time when the Soviet Union was a socialist state and controlled every aspect of a person's life and career.

But Tatiana is a rule breaker.

Alina is a very courageous woman, with a 20 year career in high level finance behind her. She was a Managing Director at Rothschild & Co, responsible for €3 billion of assets under management. She's a also a mother, raising a high-functioning autistic son.

I grew up in London, where some nights it was so foggy I could only see a few yards ahead in front of my face.

Despite the darkness and the fog, I could still regularly drive the 10 miles to my home.

Life is much like that. It would be nice to have clarity 10 years into the future about exactly what's
going to happen but it doesn't really work like that.

Today I mess with the thinking of two successful coaches and business owners.

I had no idea what would happen next. But that's where the magic almost always is, in life—when you have no idea what is coming next. Today I’m coaching Barbara and I begin by drawing out her story.

I discover that she’s an incredibly courageous woman, which is valuable because she then tries to enroll me in a story about how scared she is...

Often our job as a coach is not much more than to NOT buy into the stories our clients are living into.

By the time we are complete she’s had a powerful insight moment and I say “cut!” to my editor.

But I notice Barbara make an audible sigh and relax into her chair.

So I keep the camera rolling. We continue to talk and we go even deeper.

This is becoming so common that I think I might make it a standing agreement, when I record these podcasts, that when I say cut we keep the cameras rolling anyway to see what else will come out! Enjoy…

Varian was a high-level sales executive who did $750 million in sales, during her corporate career. She was driven and she was not afraid to speak her truth to anyone. But what most people never knew was that her drive came from having a son at 17 years old. At that moment, she made a decision to be successful, no matter what, so that he would never want for anything in his life. And what most people never knew is that Varian's father died when she was just 9 years old. She was devastated. And she made a decision to disconnect emotionally from everyone, so she'd never be hurt again.

It turns out that a combination of drive and a lack of emotion make you a force to be reckoned with in the corporate world.

Varian is a fascinating woman who isn't afraid to be seen and yet she has worked incredibly hard not to be visible. She has one of the smallest online footprints I have ever seen. S8:EP05: The Worst Night of My Life. Ever. Oct 29, 2020

This episode is about the worst night of my life. Ever.

And it happened just the other day.

Before bed, I took a medication, and for about half an hour everything was fine, as I tucked in the kids and read them a bedtime story. Then something began to change... I didn't feel good and I lay down next to Monique. I didn't want to worry her but after a few more minutes, something began to feel seriously wrong.

My vision was confused and then my arms and legs started to twitch and I couldn't stop them. I could no longer speak clearly. And then my face started making involuntary movements and twitching, too.

I was seriously scared. I asked Monique to call 911. And after that it got very blurry.

I was a fearful child. I’ve been a fearful man. And I’ve spent much of my life covering it up by doing all I can to look confident on the outside, whilst feeling deeply insecure on the inside. I’m afraid of not being liked, of running out of money, of dying before I see my kids grow up, of telling Monique what I really, really want, of aiming too high, of failing, of looking bad, of getting NOs…

But I have learned that FEAR IS A MASK FOR DESIRE. And when a client asks me to help them get rid of a fear, I’m far more interested to find out what they really, really want. Underneath fear is desire. It’s what their fear is holding them back from.

A few, rare people live in a “Created World.” Whatever happens, they are at choice how they respond to the world around them.

The Manifesto is a tool I have used to work on myself year, after year, after year, to create myself as the person I've become.

It's a never ending process because the person I am today is someone who's growing into the person I'll be tomorrow.

Vicki Shillington has over 20 years experience as an executive at a Fortune 50 form. She's been a consultant at one of the "Big Five" accounting and consulting firms. She's built a reputation for leading transformation for Fortune 500 companies. She's an expert in positive psychology. And she's known for speaking her truth to high level leaders. Her clients include a $500 billion dollar corporation. And she's regularly called on to consult with start-ups (one of her passions).

Today I coached Catherine. Catherine is a member of 4PC, she is a top performer, she is an estate attorney by background, and she has a business that makes millions. She is really making an impact on people's lives, helping them create an amazing future for themselves and their children.

She has had a taste of coaching and loves it! But she is sucked into those things that drain her of energy in her business. So, I teach her a tool that I call "Hell yes. Hell No. Maybe."

It will transform her business, it will transform her leadership team, and it will transform the life of all of them as they get more and more away from the "hell nos" and more and more into the "hell yeses" for their life and their business.

I tell her a story too about another tool called "the avoid at all costs list," which is a game changer. She has this insight that has her say "wow," and then we are there.

Today's episode isn't a coaching session. It's a very honest conversation with one of my Protégés.

Before becoming a coach, Mark Silverman generated over $90 million in complex tech sales in the corporate world and worked at numerous rapid growth startups.

He sought me out as his coach and he became a member of my community.

Mark is now making over $200K a year as a coach and working with dream clients. His first book sold over 50,000 copies and he is working on his second. However, it definitely was not always like this.

Once he began working with me, he quite quickly created a 6-figure income but that didn't cover the expenses of his former lifestyle. And he went through quite a challenging time for a while.

Angela used to work for the United Nations, for UNESCO and she is based in Paris. She is a woman who has done extraordinary things in her life.

She runs 180 Kilometer races, ultra marathons, almost 120 miles. She doesn't like to do things by halves. Even when she is taking on a mission she can't take on just one, she takes on a number at the same time.

I begin every coaching session with two secret beliefs:

You are far more powerful than you know. Especially if you've already accomplished things that impress most people.
Tears are a release of emotion. And if I can create a safe enough space, my clients will cry when they share things with me they never shared with another living soul.

I begin this coaching session with one of my favorite coaching questions: “What would make this an extraordinary conversation?”

Kristen's reply was intellectually engaging but I couldn't feel her. So, I know we need to dive deep...

Like all my clients, Kristen is a top performer with a track record of success. She’s a retired television executive who founded a non-profit that has brought clean water to over 100,000 people in developing countries.

And as I dive in, Kristen shares things with me that she’s never shared before. In fact, she’s moved to tears. She leaves the conversation with an insight that will make a massive impact in her life and in the lives of her clients.

Success is great, sometimes even addictive. It sounds like a good problem to have, but that’s not really the case. Rich’s guest today, Eric, is feeling the effects of that addiction. After reading The Prosperous Coach, Eric took off before he even began working with Rich. He is seemingly living the coach’s dream, having a coaching business with 10 clients at $100k per year. Except, sometimes success hurts. He has all sorts of unique challenges because of the way he set his business up. There’s no secret that making a career change at the top of your game is an incredibly exciting and scary thought. Consciously leaving a successful career means that somewhere inside, you are searching for the person that you want to be. If you are willing to sacrifice the time, money, and energy to go through the J curve of business, then you can do, “scary.” Once you can do, “scary,” then you can finally figure out what you are worth, so don’t be afraid to charge that amount of money!

Prior to becoming coaches, Kyle was a high flying executive who worked 80 hour weeks, Aaron's career was focused on social justice, and Alex produced events that generated millions in revenue in the trade show field. They are each on the search for what they want to create. It’s not what you’re doing; it’s who you’re being when you’re doing that. There’s only one way to do it, whatever “it” is, and that’s your way. Every single one of us is a unique human being who has our own way that we can be successful in our own right, and we can do it that way better than anyone else. It’s hard to realize this because of all of the self-limiting beliefs that are rooted in pressures from social media. Rich’s clients today, Rene and Dan, are having a hard time creating their path in a way that’s genuine to their own person.

Rene took a brave step when she decided to become a professional coach just 2 years before she was set to retire from a 28-year successful corporate career. She came seeking permission to pursue her own path. Dan spent most of his career rehabilitating some of the most dangerous and violent criminal offenders in the world before he became a coach. He was searching for the reason why he was not doing what was most important to him. Rich is able to mess with their thinking to the point that they experience their insights in heavy silence.

Your goal should be to feel lazier as your career goes on. Rich’s guests today, Kacey and Briony, are struggling with these fears.

Fear is often a mask for desire. When Rich hears that, he looks past the fear and tries to uncover the desire behind the mask. Rich was able to remove this mask with his guest today, Niki Parker. Niki works for the International Red Cross. She set up a coaching program for the World Economic Forum and created an online digital campaign that generated millions of dollars and raised awareness of the environment. Niki tried to sell her limitations and fear to Rich but he wasn’t buying it. Through 1 insight she is able to see that what she thinks is fear is, in fact, the energy she has for her greatest desires. She realizes that she is so busy that she hasn’t sat down to create her specific intentions to focus that energy Intention is powerful.

Fighting for limitations is something that clients do all the time. As a coach, you need to challenge your clients by not allowing them to enroll you in that story. Parissa, Rich’s client, came in today with that fight for her limitations, but Rich didn’t bite. Parissa is an advisory board member in a female-founded AI startup with a track record of success in the corporate world. She believes that she has a “new coach smell,” and that has caused a tremendous amount of self-doubt. The important thing to remember is that if you have exemplified enough leadership in life then you are not new to coaching. It’s so easy to dismiss your background starting a new career but it’s a vital part of who you are. Remember just how powerful you really are. Don’t think you can do it, know you can!
