Reinhold Messner is an Italian mountaineer and explorer from South Tyrol “whose astonishing feats on Everest and on peaks throughout the world have earned him the status of the greatest climber in history.” He is renowned for making the first solo ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and for being the first climber to ascend all fourteen “eight-thousanders” (peaks over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) above sea level). He is the author of at least 63 books (in German, 1970–2006), many of which have been translated into other languages.

Soft Active Materials: From Granular Rods to Flocks, Cells and Tissues
This ICAM workshop brought together junior and senior researchers working on the emergent properties of soft active matter. It focused on nonequilibrium collective behavior and locomotion in active systems, including mixtures of cytoskeletal filaments and motor proteins, the cell cytoskeleton, bacteria colonies, collections of cells in elastic matrices or living tissues, plankton in the ocean, insects or animal groups and vibrated granular layers. By bringing together researchers from a variety of disciplines we hope to stimulate new interactions and ideas in this rapidly evolving field.
BroadE: Proteomics – The Broad Institute
BroadE workshops bring researchers in the extended Broad community together so they can learn from one another. BroadE workshops (the ‘E’ stands for education) offer insights and share hands-on training in breakthrough technologies, high-throughput methods, and computational tools not typically found in conventional research labs. Through this ongoing series, which is open to Broad staff and to researchers at MIT and Harvard, the Broad community hopes to extend the impact of its science and openly share new methods.
