What Happened at Braley Pond

Located in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, Braley Pond is a popular recreational area located 30 minutes outside of Staunton, Virginia. It’s also one of the most haunted campsites in the United States. Reports of spirits hovering above the water there and the sounds of laughing children have been heard at night. Though rumors of at least one suicide have been reported there, the 2003 gang murder of Christopher S. Kennedy is what most locals believe is the cause of Braley Pond’s mysterious paranormal occurrences.

Six months after Kenedy’s murder, Shea Willis and her friend Chris Pugh, two well-known local paranormal investigators, took a trip to Braley Pond to investigate the hauntings themselves. What they found was unlike anything they’d ever experienced before.

What Happened at Braley Pond is a 9-part exploratory podcast about our need to understand the unknown. It's about our search for bigger truths, about life and death and the hereafter, about our need for connection, not just with each other, but with the loved ones we've lost in our lives.

Strangeland

STRANGELAND from audiochuck is an investigative series that examines cases in immigrant neighborhoods. Season 3: The Killing Fields of L.A. is hosted by Ben Adair and Mayly Tao. In 1996, a Cambodian refugee was gunned down in an alley in L.A.’s Chinatown. But this wasn’t a typical murder. The victim was Haing Ngor, an Oscar-winning actor and humanitarian. Many Cambodians believe Ngor was assassinated over his role in The Killing Fields – a film that depicted the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror. Three teenage gang members were convicted and sentenced to decades in prison for murder. Yet to this day, the Cambodian community remains unconvinced of the boys’ guilt. Because the thousands of dollars in cash found on Ngor didn’t square with the LAPD’s story, and multiple witnesses said investigators coerced their testimony. In this season of Strangeland, journalist Ben Adair and Cambodian-American podcaster Mayly Tao piece through Haing Ngor’s journey from genocide survivor to Hollywood star to murder victim — and re-investigate the LAPD’s case to find out if justice was lost in translation. Strangeland is produced by Western Sound. Read More

Hemingway’s Picasso

Steve Kough lived many lives. He was an NFL journeyman, a male model, and one of the most well-connected smugglers in 1980’s Miami, the “Drug Capital of the World." Kough collected many souvenirs from his adventures, but his most treasured bounty – a beautiful ceramic, crafted by Pablo Picasso and gifted to Ernest Hemingway at the author’s Cuban home, the Finca Vigia... or so the story goes. Lost during the Cuban Revolution, the artwork resurfaced when Kough took it as a payment for drug run financed by the notorious Pablo Escobar. Kough passed away in 2018, passing the piece down to his son, Stevie, a skateboarding hippie growing weed in California. Stevie feels he needs to complete his father’s mission – of selling this piece and telling Steve’s cinematic life story. So, is the Picasso authentic—or a fraud? Was Steve Kough a big talker or a real deal smuggler? Does any of that matter or is this a story of aspiration, legacy, and difficult love? Tune in on Monday’s starting on October 18th to find out! This is a Somethin' Else production in association with Vespucci. Read More
