Underbelly: Killing Kurt

For decades, Kurt Calabrese lived in the shadow of his father, Frank “The Breeze” Calabrese Sr., one of the Chicago Outfit’s most feared hitmen and loan sharks. Raised in a home ruled by violence, paranoia, and control, Kurt grew up knowing that loyalty wasn’t a choice, it was survival. In 2007, the Family Secrets Trial exposed 18 unsolved murders and a laundry list of heinous crimes that had terrorized Chicago for decades. Based on wiretap evidence from Kurt’s brother Junior, the case led to life sentences for some of the most powerful mob figures in modern history, effectively dismantling the Chicago Outfit. But the trial was just the public reckoning. The real story began years earlier, inside the Calabrese family itself. Season 3 of the award-winning podcast Underbelly, “Killing Kurt” takes listeners back to where it all began. Beyond the headlines and the courtroom, this is the story of a crime family at war with itself. As Kurt wrestled with his own loyalty, his older brother committed the ultimate betrayal, setting off a chain of events that would not only take down their father but leave Kurt caught in the crossfire. Told through his firsthand account, Kurt reveals the untold cost of growing up in the mob, the violence at home, the psychological toll, and the impossible choices made to escape a legacy of fear. Listen to the all new season of Underbelly: Killing Kurt, premiering April 2nd. CORRUPTION: What happened to Grant Solomon?

On July 20, 2020, 18-year-old Grant Solomon tragically died in Gallatin, Tennessee; his body was found in a ditch underneath his own truck. In what was described as a freak accident, the details of Grant’s death remain unclear to many people. The only known witness was Grant's father, Aaron Solomon*, a former Nashville TV News Anchor turned financial analyst. There was no investigation or accident reconstruction of the automobile fatality and shockingly NO autopsy; though there were many discrepancies between the official statement, the condition of Grant's body, and the state of Grant's truck. Join us as we investigate Grant's odd and tragic death, with the goal of re-opening his case and getting Grant the justice he deserves. There's more to this story than what meets the eye, and we're currently uncovering some major red flags in Tennessee.

*Grant's death has been ruled offically as an accident: Aaron Solomon has never been charged or arrested for any of the allegations made against him by his ex-wife or daughter.

The Last Ride

Two young men of color vanished three months apart, on the same road in Naples, Florida, under eerily similar circumstances nearly 20 years ago. They were last seen with the same white sheriff's deputy. The since-fired deputy said he gave the men rides to Circle K stores, a story that could never be corroborated. He's the only person of interest, but has never been charged. No one has. What went wrong? Did the police drop the ball? Did the media? The eight-episode series, distributed by the NPR Network, includes new details and exclusive interviews with Tyler Perry, Ben Crump, family and friends of the men, and investigators, and dramatic polygraph audio. Reported by veteran journalists with the Naples Daily News and The Fort Myers News-Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, and produced in partnership with WGCU Public Media. Read More
