The Hopeful Majority with Manu Meel

Every Monday, Manu Meel invites you into a conversation about how we overcome our toxic politics to write the next chapter in our American story.

Because let’s face it. In today's America, it is easy to divide and hard to bring people together. There are a loud few dominating the conversation while the rest of us stay quiet. This ends now.

If you’re tired of how divided and toxic our society has become, you are actually in the majority. Most of us want a society that incentivizes curiosity, listening, and navigating our differences in search of solutions. It’s time for those of us in the Hopeful Majority to be heard.

Join us every week as we build the Hopeful Majority because the time is now!

Died and Survived

Award-winning British journalist and broadcaster Charlie Webster experienced life after death. After completing a 3000 mile charity cycling challenge from Europe to South America ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games, she became critically ill and was put on life support. Her dire situation made global headlines. But after two weeks in a coma, Charlie made a miraculous recovery that baffled doctors both in Brazil and the UK. While in the coma, Charlie had an “NDE” – near death experience – in which her mind was very much alive despite her body giving up. Throughout this inspirational eight-part series, Charlie chronicles her profound and captivating experience, sharing vivid memories of being in a coma while doctors worked to save her and family gathered to await her fate, opening up a greater conversation about the afterlife.    Charlie also acts as a detective, piecing together clues to build a bulletproof case as to how to approach death, and how to live in the here and now. She meets with “experiencers” and hears their startling personal encounters with death and the beyond, as well as with experts – scientific and spiritual opinion leaders – who are using hard science and modern technology to gain never-before seen or heard evidence of the afterlife.

Gumbands

People around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, know the word “gumbands.”It’s a regionalism, a somewhat wacky word that some call an example of “Pittsburghese.” A gumband is simply a rubber band, and we all know those words too, but we also often have a bit of pride in our exclusive Pittsburgh vocabulary. WQED’s longtime producer Rick Sebak is the host, and he works closely with podcast creator Rich Capaldi who has been producing at WQED since 2017. Read More
