Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) Law as a Product (LMU)

The law sets a framework for market transactions and competition. However, in recent years, the law itself has become a commodity in many regions of the world and in various fields: especially corporate, bankruptcy and contract law, not to mention the settlement of disputes. Individuals and companies search for the most attractive rules of law and states compete for the favour of demanders through their offers. Since legal competition has been the object of preliminary empirical explorations in the past years, the CAS research focus now aims to focus on its normative implications. How should one assess the fact that law can be "traded" on markets – just like any other good? Besides jurisprudence, various disciplines – such as economics, philosophy, political science and sociology – will apply different evaluation criteria and provide different answers to this question. Al Gore

The 45th Vice President of the United States, Albert Gore, Jr. received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2007 for his effort to raise international awareness of the human impact on global climate change. The son of Senator Albert Gore, Sr. of Tennessee, he grew up in Washington, and on the family farm in Carthage, Tennessee. He studied literature and government at Harvard, where he first became interested in environmental issues. After graduating with honors from Harvard, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He worked as a reporter for an army newspaper during the war, and on his return to civilian life he became an investigative reporter for the Nashville Tennessean. In 1976, he was elected the Congressional seat previously held by his father. In the House of Representatives, he held the first hearings on global climate change, and became one of the body's experts on arms control and telecommunications. In 1984, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he wrote the High performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 (the Gore Bill), which led to construction of the National Information Infrastructure, which Senator Gore dubbed, the "information superhighway." At age 39, he sought the presidency for the first time, but withdrew before the 1988 Democratic convention. His 1991 book Earth in the Balance became a national bestseller, and introduced many readers to the issues of climate change. In 1992, Democratic presidential nominee Bill Clinton selected Gore as his running mate. Clinton and Gore were elected to two full terms, and in 2000 Gore became his party's nominee for president. Although Gore won a plurality of the popular vote, the Electoral College vote went to George W. Bush after a controversial Supreme Court decision put an end to a recount in the closely contested state of Florida. Returning to private life, Gore resumed his environmental advocacy. His book on climate change, An Inconvenient Truth, became a national best-seller and inspired an Oscar-winning documentary. Gore founded the Alliance for Climate Protection and the Current TV network, both of which he chairs. This podcast was recorded at the Academy of Achievement's 1988 Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, when Gore was United States Senator. Read More

William H. McRaven

On May 1, 2011, President Obama and his national security team gathered in the White House Situation Room to watch a commando raid taking place half a world away. As the mission unfolded, the President was in continuous video contact with the senior military officer directing the operation from a base in Afghanistan, Admiral William McRaven. To this task, Admiral McRaven brought three decades of experience in special operations. The first officer to graduate from the Special Operations and Limited Warfare program at the Naval Postgraduate School, he has held commands at every level of the special ops community, from leading a single SEAL platoon, to his final post as Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). His experience includes commands in Desert Storm and Desert Shield, leadership of SEAL Team Three, and of NATO's special operations command (SOCEUR). At USSOCOM, Admiral McRaven oversaw and coordinated elite forces from all branches of the nation's military, including such storied outfits as the Navy Seals, the Army's Green Berets and Delta Force, and the Air Force Special Tactics Squadron. The success, that night in 2011, of the raid that eliminated Osama bin Laden without a single American casualty was due, in no small part, to the unique expertise of the man who organized and executed the plan, Admiral William McRaven. Earlier this year, Admiral McRaven retired from the Navy to become Chancellor of the nine-campus University of Texas system. In this podcast, recorded at the 2014 International Achievement Summit in San Francisco, Admiral McRaven addresses a profoundly simple question, "How do you change the world, when so much lies beyond your control?" Recalling incidents from his own life and service, he demonstrates that we all have opportunities to perform numberless small acts of encouragement, courage and compassion that can have repercussions far beyond our own lives.
